[SOLVED] browser window too small |
|
Since first starting using Puppy a few days ago, and after selecting a browser (Firefox), I noticed the window size for the browser as displayed on the desktop/screen didn't fill the whole screen, as shown here in this screenshot of how it currently appears: http://imagebin.org/206353
Thinking maybe the solution was to simply choose full screen option from the View menu in the Firefox menu bar, that did in fact enlarge the browser window to fill the entire screen but excluded the bottom taskbar, the Firefox menus and tabs, the scrollbar, and the entire border of the browser window, eliminating user control of the desktop and/or browser.
Obviously something has set the browser window to default to the size as shown in the screenshot, but this is not the size I desire nor am used to. I would prefer the browser window default to fill the whole screen but of course still to include the other surrounding elements which as I just mentioned are missing otherwise if I simply choose full screen from Firefox View menu.
Also, I noticed the Firefox version which was listed to download among the choices presented in the browser download selection with Puppy (Lucid 528) was 7 or under. I believe I could update Firefox to the latest version which is 11.
Any suggestions/solution to this issue would be appreciated.

double click (left button) on the top bar to fill the screen and keep the controls, double click again to shrink
another handy thing to note is that if you scroll the mouse wheel on the top bar, you can shade and un-shade the window

and to update firefox... use an official lucid pet, rather than the updater, as the later firefox's have been quite problematic... http://ftp.nluug.nl/ibiblio/distributions/puppylinux//pet-packages-lucid/Firefox-11-Lucid-2.pet

Well, just a little while ago, before I got a chance to download the official lucid pet firefox update as you mention, firefox automatically updated me via its updater to the its latest version 11.
Please if you can advise me what I should do so that I can not be stuck with the problematic one (how to get rid of it and/or otherwise change to the official lucid pet Firefox 11 version. thanks

If you had a firefox v9.01 or newer, the auto-update is probably OK. Use it for awhile and see how it goes. The versions after 9 seem to auto-update Ok.
The bad thing is, they seem to be tweaking Firefox constantly, and changing how it works. For now if it does the basics, I am happy.
If not, you can download the Lucid pet of Firefox 11, install it, and it will install over the Firefox version you have.

Please could you clarify for me if I already had a firefox v9.01 that the auto update is probably okay? (Because for me that wasn't the case; I had firefox v7 before firefox auto-updated me to its v11.) Or are you saying that if the auto-update was after 9 the auto-updated version should probably be okay regardless.
Also, would you think if I downloaded the Lucid pet version of Firefox 11 and it installs over the Firefox version I have that my firefox add-ons would be carried over or would I probably have to re add them to the Lucid pet version?
Thanks.

Your Firefox extensions are stored/installed to your profile, which isn't normally touched when you update or install a different version of Firefox. If you're simply updating from FF9 to version 11, your profile and extensions shouldn't be touched.

But I updated from FF7 straight to version 11. So I'm concerned about potential issues in that case. Previous post in this thread mentioned later versions of Firefox have been quite problematic unless the official Lucid pet versions are used.

first off i guess is to test your firefox, as the issues that arose when people auto upgraded to 9 & 10 may have been worked out in 11
tests
try watching a video on youtube.
try opening googlemail
visit some other sites with lots of flash
the problems people had were firefox hanging/freezing , and if yours isn't then you are probably ok.
----------------------------------
however, to uninstall programs you've installed....
1. open the ppm (you can access the ppm through... quickpet>>>>>more pets>>>>>puppy package manager. or in the menu>>setup>>setup puppy
2. you'll either have a window at the bottom showing installed packages, or an uninstall button (depends on which theme the PPM is set with) either way, just click once on a package name to uninstall

666philb,
Okay, thanks. I'll test it as suggested and generally be aware of the issues you mentioned that may occur. The info on uninstalling you provided is of course helpful also to me as beginner getting used to puppy, and is appreciated.
