I gather the equivqlent to Irfanview for Linux is XNview or XNConvert. There were 3 choices of XNConvert to download : DEB, RPM, TAR GZ. Which one should I try? Puppy 5.1.1

Puppy 5.11 Lucid is based on Ubuntu ; -) so the DEB might work

RPM - is for Redhat Linux

TAR.GZ - is a compressed file - usually un-compiled source, that you can build to your own liking

---

However, good news, pemasu has compiled it for Puppy, use either PET or SFS, see
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=52508

for more about file types see,

Well I installed the Tar and can't find or open it. I then installed the DEB and can't find or open that. Both show in the pkg mgr so they did install. The DEB install ended with a mssg: XnConvert Category None, this pkg does not have a menu entry. Well where is the sense of that?

I opened Utility > General > Xarchive and saw XnConvert. What do I do with that? How do I open/use this program? Where might it be?

Have you checked out Menu -> Graphic -> mtPaint, the very powerful image processing program that comes with Puppy?

Have you tried downloading the PET file from
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=52508

this is the easiest method, once the PET file is downloaded the you just click on it and it will install ; -)

the compressed file is most likely source code that'll need compiling

@flash yep mtPaint is good, its a bit different to IrfanView though Cool

Well just for drill from Puppy (511) I dismounted the CD, inserted a thumb drive, copied a pic to thumb drive, rebooted into windows XP, resized the pic in Irfanview, saved that to Desktop, moved it to thumb drive, rebooted to Puppy, Copied the resized pic to My Docs, checked its properties.

6 minutes 43 seconds.

Probly go faster with practice; About 1/2 of that was waiting for XP to grind it's way back to life.

Not to discredit your feat Very Happy , of course, but you know that irfanview works very well under wine, don't you? I use it for whatever mtpaint can't do.

If you install wine in your Puppy and use irfanview over it, you'll save 6 minutes and 30 seconds. Twisted Evil

BFN.

I have messed with MTPAINT not succesfully - yet. Reduced a photo size but it didn't produce a high point in my happiness cycle.

Anyway I do have Wine onboard. (The computer - not me Smile) and will look into the above recommendations. Thanx. 99% of my photo editing is just reducing pics to email size.

I did click around all of the above and wound up with the XnConvet installed and even opened it but haven't tried it yet. With everything I spent about 90 minutes thrashing around. 90min / 6.75min = 13.3 pics I coulda edited by switchnig temporarily to Windows. Smile Never saw how to use Irfanview with Wine.

Thanx for trying to help me here and elsewhere on the forum. I will mess with that XnConvert when I get time. Right now I don't. Sad

if you already have wine installed, just download the regular irfanview program, and click it.
It will bring up the installer ( just like in windows), and install the same too. When it asks where you want it installed, pick somewhere you'll remember. After installation, go to the folder you put it and click the irfanviewportable.exe to run it

I got my irfanview from here

you have hit the learning, every system has it

we try to reduce it, but its still there

on the positive Linux isn't going to keep changing the interface, unless you want to, or keep on forcing you to upgrade.

plus mtpaint's developer can be contacted, may be worth dropping some constructive criticism.

i've used Irfan on wine and it has worked fine.

Gentlemen: I fully expected to spend much time learning and maybe I'm slower than most but my wife has Alzheimer's and I am up to my ass. Flattens my learning curve. dL/dt = about zero.

I'll get back to it but it will be a while and I will again venture forth into the land of Linux seeking the illusive Irfanview. Smile

and thanx again for your help.

I know that condolences on the internet don't do a lot of good, but I'm sure I speak for many when I wish the best to you, your wife, and your family.

when you do come back, take a look at my earlier post--I think it will get you there quickly. If not, we'll help.

@discombolixt: Read here for a simple JPEG photo resizer.

To use this kind of command line program, browse to the required folder. Then press the back-tick key above the Tab key. This gets you a command prompt inside the folder.
