Trinity 3.5.13 Subject description: KDE 3.x fork, Puppy-optimized |
|
Trinity is a fork of KDE 3.x that continues its development from the point where the KDE team moved to KDE 4.0.
It provides a fast, stable, consistent and battle-tested desktop environment suitable for everyone.
Here's a Trinity 3.5.13 SFS built and tested on dpup. It's ultra-optimized and took about 8 hours to build. Sources are available here and they're quite big, so I won't upload them.
It has only two "exotic" dependencies: libutempter and libxslt. Both are included.
The SFS contains just the base Trinity, without any extra applications. They are available through its website and I guess I'll make packages for some.
Supported puppies
- Basically, all recent puplets with with XZ support in Squashfs
- All recent dpups (it was built on Guy Dog)
- Mayble: 5.2.8, 5.3 (not checked)
It ships as a XZ-compressed SFS, so if you can't use it with your Puppy, decompress it using a recent unsquashfs and create a new SFS you can use.
Mesa (Xorg_High or whatever you call it) or a replacement (e.g NVIDIA drivers) is required to run Trinity.
Installation instructions
Open a terminal window and run this -
| Code: | echo /opt/qt3/lib >> /etc/ld.so.conf
echo /opt/trinity/lib >> /etc/ld.so.conf
ldconfig
echo startkde > /etc/windowmanager |
The SFS was made out of PET packages that do this automatically.
Once you ran this, the Qt3 and Trinity libraries will be available and Trinity will become your default window manager. In order to start Trinity, restart X.

Known Issues
Because of Puppy's non-standard menu structure, your menus will be a 'lil bit messed up. In the case of Guy Dog (my puplet), the menus look just fine, since all applications have standard menu entries, except Puppy's configuration wizards, PPM, etc'.

IIRC squashfs xz support started with kernel 2.6.38 ?
So puplets using kernel 2.6.37 would probably not support it ?
I only know racy kernel 3.0.7 supporting squashfs xz for now .
The racy mksquashfs defaults to gz if no arguments are given .
[ tested a rsync partition backup of 12GB :
mksquashfs : 45min , 4.6GB
tar -cf : 15min + bzip2 110min , 5.2GB ]
I like squashfs gz more for now , since i am able to mount these sfs with older kernels .
| Quote: | | SquashFS version 4 is included in Linux Kernel since 2.6.29 and it supports XZ (LZMA2) compression since 2.6.38. |

You'll just need squashfs 4.2 built with XZ support to extract the SFS. Then, you can re-package it with gzip compression.
And yes, XZ support was added in 4.2 and entered mainline in 2.6.38.

Hats off to you once again Iguleder! Your very first Trinity Desktop for Puppy was absolutely gorgeous and you've gone ahead and really out-done yourself here! I, for one, am thankful to have people like you around to bring us such high-quality desktops and Puppy variants as you've done in your spare time.
I still continue using your first Trinity on my LucidPup-510 and enjoy that immensely, mainly for the sheer speed which Puppy brings to the KDE desktop, and for the true beauty of the system as well. When people see my computer they just can't believe that Puppy can be so versatile - even doing more than their own machines! LOL!
Thank you for your continued work - alone with so many others as well - in making Puppy the very BEST Linux distro out there!
Amicalement/Cheers/Shalom!

Just compiled squshfs-tools-4.2 running kernel 2.6.30.5 :
NEEDED
http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/liblzma2
http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/liblzma-dev
AND commenting out of
#XZ_SUPPORT = 1
XZ_SUPPORT = 1
in the Makefile .
DL now to see if kstars included [ 59.6MB ] .
I knew kde from suse , especially 6.2 , had given a 400MB HDD for /opt that time

FIRST impression : converted to gz squashfs4 it became 72MB , loaded frugally with Macpup_Foxy3-430/431 .
BUT : needs GLIBC >=2.11
Lupu/Pupp5 has got 2.11 i think , slacko 2.13 .
actual Wary/Racy has got 2.10
Puppy-4 2.6+
also wants :
xsetroot: command not found
xprop: command not found
two [ integers missing in /opt/trinity/bin/startkde
283:$kcmfonts_general_forcefontdpi -eq 120
287:$kcmfonts_general_forcefontdpi -eq 96
Will test to boot it on a glibc-2.11.x Puppy .

Puppy Squeeze 005
# uname -r
2.6.33.2
# cat /etc/windowmanager

Posting the first time ever from konqueror browser ..
Rendering is slightly messed in the browser window , maybe due to missing xorg-high .
Otherwise it works well .
No crashing errors in /tmp/xerrs.log , only:

Could not load library! Trying exec....

Oh c'mon, stop being so stubborn.
Just get some recent and supported Puppy that meets the requirement instead of running an old Puppy with Bash 3.x and glibc 2.10.x.

Igu, you've done it again
Haven't tried yet but am downloading now and expect no problems.
Why don't you put your litle instructions in the first post into a pinstall.sh? [edit: oh, I see now you did! woops!] Shinobar's sfs_load can handle these, making it super easy for the command line challenged. (or the lazy like me )
I did actually make a kde-4.4 sfs for slacko but it's over 200M (gz) so I didn't advertise it much. Needs a little work too, all the crappy akonadi deps and junk need prising out. Plus it would likely need at least a gig of ram and a 2 gig processor for satisfactory performance
Trinity is at the other end of the scale. I reckon it should run great on my hamstrung eee-pc-701Sd.
Let you know how's it go
A little later (manically laughing)... (needed reboot though)

Sorry for the late reply, just type "poweroff" or "reboot" at the console prompt, or else install "PupShutdown", an app by forum member radky.

Sorry if my question seems dumb, but am i correct in understanding that i need Slacko or Lupu 528 to run Trinity? I have multiple puppies all on hard drive full installations, but the newest i have is a derivative of 525. I can get rid of one of my 3 431 derivatives to make room for a newer one. I love Trinity and classic KDE. Currently have Trinity Kubuntu and also Trinity on Porteus. Would love very much to get it on a puppy, since that is what i use on a day to day basis (currently KDE-Slax by pri) Thank you for any advice and for the Trinity sfs.

After downloading the trinity.sfs, I was able to switch to KDE, but when I open any window, I am unable to drag its position from where it opened.
What did I do wrong?
Thanks Andy
