alsa sound problems (hd install)

I have no sound. I know this is because i didnt configure alsa. If i try the alsa wizard from the menu i get the 1st page and then if i hit enter the window dissapears. If i try alsawizard out of X i get the error rxvt connot open display :0. Has anyon else ever seen this?

I haven't seen that before, but the alsa wizard is not very friendly. I've had a heck of a time trying to get my alsa configuration the way that I want it.
What is your sound hardware? Have you tried using modprobe to load the correct driver manually?

no alsa works on my hardware fine. If i boot a clean livecd i can setup sound at boot fine. but when i booted before istalling(im on a hdd) i dont think i used alsa at boot.
