I got curious on an Ubuntu remix? Thorium so I made a too hasty test.
Using it now to write this confusing report.

I used puppy to download the iso from their homepage.
then extract the casper and preseed and maybe one need boot too
but not sure.

I use the cheat code that I favor for ubuntu like distros.

title Thorium-Linux 2011 frugal iso boot
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /Thorium-Linux.iso
kernel /casper/vmlinuz rw file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/Thorium-Linux.iso noeject noprompt quiet splash --
initrd /casper/initrd.lz

Most likely you could change all this to something like this

title Thorium-Linux 2011 frugal iso boot
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /Thorium-Linux.iso
kernel /Thorium-Linux/casper/vmlinuz rw file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/Thorium-Linux.iso noeject noprompt quiet splash --
initrd /Thorium-Linux/casper/initrd.lz

By placing the casper inside of the Thorium-Linux directory that way
you can boot other ubuntu like LM12 using fruga install without having
multiple casper directories. Place the other files inside of Thorium-Linux
but place the Thorium-Linux.iso on /mnt/home/ as always.

Using it this way on NTFS one get root permissions despite being user
ubuntu To get your country keyboard you do your version of setxkbmap se o Spanish has es and France has fr and so on.

[url]http://www.humyo.com/!#/FBxMggh/Thorium%20Linux/[/url]
Less than 400MB and use Firefox 4.0 so that is too old but Flash is built in.
Thunar and openbox

@nooby: Here is a way to have actual users and home directories with your Ubuntu frugal install. That way, you don't have to save files directly into your NTFS partition.

The basic idea is to use a separate USB flash drive as the storage device.

Read here. Skip the first section about making a bootable flash drive.

Using Gparted, format the flash drive as ext4. DON'T ACCIDENTALLY FORMAT YOUR MAIN HARD DRIVE!

Using Gparted, give the flash drive partition the label "casper-rw".

In your GRUB menu.lst entry, add the word "persistent" as shown.

Reboot to Ubuntu with your storage drive plugged in.

Much appreciated. So this usb then being ext4 it will be seen even
by a "Live session Ubuntu" as a proper way of being persistent?
That would be cool.

Did I tell about my latest fiasco?
I tried to boot Blender ubuntu and of Luninux Ubuntu.
Both failed with same error message. Failing to find a live media.

I only give the code for one of them. I used almost identical.

title LuninuXOS-11.11 frugal iso boot noeject noprompt quiet splash --
find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /LuninuXOS-11.11-Desktop-i386.iso
kernel /LuninuXOS/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/custom.seed boot=casper iso-scan/filename=/LuninuXOS-11.11-Desktop-i386.iso splash --
initrd /LuninuXOS/casper/initrd.gz

the other maybe have initrd.lz instead and ubuntu.seed maybe.
Don't remember have already delete it.

But the title Thorium-Linux where a success. So I will test if that one
accept the usb with ext4 on it.

And I failed totally to get Plop Linux to boot.

Tried these three

title ploplinux
root (hd0,1)
kernel (hd0,1)/kernel/bzImage vga=1
initrd (hd0,1)/kernel/initramfs.gz

title Plop Linux ISO
rootnoverify (hd32)
kernel (hd0,1)/syslinux/kernel/bzImage vga=1 iso_filename=ploplinux-4.2.1-x.iso
initrd (hd0,1)/syslinux/kernel/initramfs.gz

title Plop Linux ISO
map /ploplinux-4.2.1.iso (hd32)
map --hook
rootnoverify (hd32)
kernel ()/syslinux/kernel/bzImage vga=1 iso_filename=ploplinux-4.2.1.iso
initrd ()/syslinux/kernel/initramfs.gz

I guess the map and hook either need contigious space which I don't have
or it needs ext2 or 3 or something?

Hey nooby,

what's that going on with you?

Are you running for disasters?

I think you are acting like hunted tiger. Only shredding the prey but never eating it all.

Why don't you try to do the easiest thing and then trying to get some steps beyond that point (step by step).

Try to do a remaster on the puppy of your choice that runs (at first) only on your computer - and then let's hear some SUCCESS!

You do have one Computer?

And how many OS's downloaded and burnt on CD?

13,687 ???

Aren't you getting sick of that? Sad

Haha! Hunted Tiger? Nope more like a Kitten chased by the Linux Dogs.

Trying to boot the new entries on DW is almost all the fun I have in life.
Yeah why don't I get a real life instead of internet. Well I have tried that
since about 1986 and totally failed. I am not good at social relations
and not good at anything not even testing linux. Only good at whining Smile

Yes I sure will do a remaster rather soon. That is a promise but before that
I will install a casper-rw ext4 formatted on a USB flash memory. 2GB or so.

And then I have to take care of the new Bike so it is ready for the spring
and the new TV/Computer Monitor that arrive now Friday. Life goes on.

Thanks for caring about me. Much appreciated.

I have about 50 CDs with OSes and I'm getting pretty sick of it, I guess I'll just use a virtual machine and burn CDs when it's something really cool, like an interesting Puppy version.

Anyways nooby, LuninuX looks extremely boring, just Ubuntu with the extra codecs. You can get Kiwi Linux which has those codecs plus Romanian and Hungarian language support. Or even better, Greenie Linux has the codecs, Gimp, Audacity, and Czech and Slovak language support, as well as English and the crappy 20-40% support for other languages as in regular Ubuntu, plus some cool Slovak landscape wallpapers.

I also tried Lamppix, very cool minimal distro, but it does have Gimp, Xmms and a few utilities, and the very cool meditating gnu wallpaper (only). It's too minimal for me, it doesn't even have games, but it could be fun to mod.

Speaking of which I want to install DSL because it's missing a lot of Puppy functions, which I find is better to learn the console on. But I couldn't get it to install on my Asus eee701. Anyone know, is the hd install frugal or full?

I was also having trouble with ReactOS, on some computers the live CDs don't work, on some the install CDs don't work. Would it be possible that the 0.3.13 install might work on some computers that the 0.3.14 install CD does not work on (not a real old computer)?

I am tempted to try that out, but I'd be wasting another CD.

Very Happy Hello,
Nooby is the Linux on NTFS guy..
Probably no one else has tested the idea as much..
Personally, I HATE NTSF... But hey, thats just me..
Even my Win7 is on Fat32...
I stopped testing a few years ago, except for "Alien Distro`s" in MultiPup, but I still have like 50 cd/dvd`s laying around..
Actually, that pile of cd`s and a user request, are why MultiPup exists..

Test them all, learn what you can, and bring it back to Puppy..
I said it years ago, long even before Woof:
"We will take that which is yours, which we find to be good, and make it our own, adding it to our own perfection.. We are Puppy..Resistance is Futile..."

Ideas like this, among many, are why Puppy is the one that will envelope them all..
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=619778#619778

However, I still support the building of the packages for Puppy, rather than the current building the Puppy for the packages system..
Our Distro, Our Package Manager, Our Repo.......
Just saying... Rolling Eyes

Trying another new distro....Slackel http://www.slackel.gr/ based on Slackware and Salix with KDE 4.8.2. It's a dvd sized download but it's got all the bells and whistles. Looks pretty solid.

There's also Desktop BSD, which is basically FreeBSD with KDE, also useable as a live DVD.

It's nice, but it has way too much stuff. It doesn't seem to affect the speed, but I wouldn't install it because it has way too many programs, not necessarily ones I want either.

What boot code did you use to boot Slackel?
I tried the one I used boot salix but failed. It looks for a live medium.
and never finds it while in salix it did find it. Unless my memory fails me.

I got active on salix forum so that indicate I got it working but
I got upset over their views on root. They don't allow anybody to be root.

Can you be root using slackel?

here is my sloppy boot code for grub4dos

Code:
title salix using salixlive-xfce-13.37-32.iso username=root passwd=live not allowed at all Cute!
kernel (hd0,1)/salixboot/vmlinuz rw xfce root=/dev/ram0 from_dev=/dev/sda2 from_dir=/salixlive fsck vga=791 changes=salixlive.save autologin
initrd (hd0,1)/salixboot/initrd.xz

For slackel I just set it up same and changed the boot names to slackel

Maybe I did it all too hasty and missed something needed?

I've ran Mepis for years and I usually check out AntiX.Recently did a full install of the test version of AntiX 12. Seems to be working well with no real problems so far.

Here is how I set up Antix on my Acer D255

first on Sda2 the internal HD in frugal install
and then how I guess it should be for frugal install
on Flash memory

Code:

title antiX-ntfs-sda2
root (hd0,1)
kernel /antiX/vmlinuz bdev=sda2 vga=791 lang=se antiX=LMXD persist
initrd /antiX/initrd.gz

title antiX-ntfs-sdb1 use it for usb boot
root (hd1,0)
kernel /antiX/vmlinuz quiet noxorg bdev=sdb1 vga=791 bdir=antiX antiX=LMXD
initrd /antiX/initrd.gz

there is a thread on antix forum for how to get persistance frugal install
on HD.
