Hi puppy friends,

I am reading the book the Screwtape letters.
I want an Icon on the desktop to my files of notes
on each chapter. They are all in one directory. I want
to put the freeBSD.png icon on the directory link
on my desktop, but it won't do it.

See the picture: my documents folder shows the devil icon
In the desktop directory you also see the devil icon

On on the left you will see the desktop icon for
screwtape letters is a folder!

Why won't the devil show on the desktop???

How can I tell the devil where to go??? Wink

Right click folder, select set icon and drag the devil in. May also need to go to menu, desktop, desktop template, save custom and select custom for persistence.

I checked and the icon is already in the folder.

I am doing this in Saluki.
It does not have a menu item for desktop.

If I could go where you suggest it might work.
I will try and see if I can find these files
in a different way,

Not familiar with xfce nor saluki so may be wrong. What I meant was that if you right click the screwtape folder options should appear one of which is 'set icon'. Click on that and a dialogue should appear with instructions to drag and drop an icon to that dialogue to associate your chosen icon with that folder.

Hi Pete22.

I just started to play with Saluki and couldn't find a way to customize folders this way, but perhaps this would help:

1. Right-click on desktop and choose Create Launcher...
2. In the Name field, type any name.
3. In the Command field, type: exo-open /path/to/folder
4. Then click No icon -> Select icon from -> Image files and browse to your icon file.
5. Click Create.

Maybe you should give it the .desktop extension - maybe that's how Xfce decides which file is actually a desktop icon.

I did it. !!!

Using the launcher was part of the solution. I could name the
launcher, and then ink it to the right folder and give it the
right icon.

Then I remembered someone taught me to open a folder by
linking it to the command exo-open. That did it. Now the
devil opens my screwtape folder!!!!

Not sure why, but now, the directory flashes open, and immediately closes.

What the devil [pun intended] is going on???????

That worked!!!!. I did not realize I needed to add that the folder needed to be opened with a file manager.

I sent the devil where he was supposed to go.
I am going to keep him out of mischief
by making him work on my desktop. Wink

The solution was so simple, yet I could not find the answer.
Stuff like this reminds me of DOS in the old days
I had a little booklet with the 100 most used commands
Is there a cheat sheet with basic linux commands?

I've read lots of your posts and tutorials here at the puppy forum.
Your directions are very clear and so helpful for folks like me.

You might think me superstitious, but I generally try to avoid using references to the diabolical, simply because I find that they are always prone to trouble. I, personally, would never want Old Scratch on my desktop. Such references draws....them.

I have even passed up cheap and usable hardware marketed under the Diablotech name because of the meaning of Diablo in Spanish.

On the other hand, the usage of daemons as processes in Linux has never been an issue because I think of the usage in ancient Greece, before the word had it's more popular and "Christianized" meaning.

I am also unlikely to play around with any variation of BSD! lol.

Seriously, though, when I first came to this forum, I sometimes did not realize that there were already compiled lists of places to look for help, and I thought everything Puppy was very scattered and clumsy to navigate. But, then again, I started out on Linux Mint!
