Pnethood, dotpup |

Welcome back, sc0ttman. Hope you are fine now.
Akita-8 has pnethood, but it does not work because the smbclient is missing.
I could not find the samba_client in the PPM, so i downloaded the package http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pet_packages-4/samba_client-3.0.26.pet.
I clicked the PET it asks 'Install?', replied 'Install', but it seems aborted.
Used the 'Find a PET to install from hard drive' works.
Need to go down to the console and type 'exit', then 'xwin' so that the PATH environment to be refreshed.
Now it works.

Made the drive icons. They are all overlapping
Icon manager does not rewrites the drive icons
Hacked 3 files, clean_desk_icons, pup_event_frontend_d, and .xinitrc.
It works
Attached the 3 hacked files.

Hi shinobar, thanks for testing
It's nice to have an expert take a look!

The pup4 repo is listed in the Akita PPM, at the top...
But the samba .pet in the pup4 repo has no petspecs file,
which I think explains the aborted install...
I repackaged it with a petspecs file, and it installs fine...
I will add the fixed pet to the akita repo..
The tooltip on the pnethood button (in "Network Shares" GUI) says the full samba package is needed...
I might update the "Network Shares" GUI to auto-install this new samba pkg,
to make things as easy as possible for users who want samba..

Thanks for this shinobar, that's great!
I never have any problems with icons, only have 3 partitions!
Or a maximum of 5 partitions, if I got my 16GB USB plugged in.
...and as I have drive labels above drive locations (unlike a normal puppy),
I left out the Woof re-alignment stuff as I assumed it would not work quite right...
The pet you attached is very much appreciated, I will apply it,
but you left .xinitrc out, it's missing, so it's not complete...

I guess it depends on the screen dimension.
Yeh, .xinitrc was missing. I have updated the attached with the previous post.
Only one line i have changed against the .xinitrc.
| Code: | # diff .xinitrc.org .xinitrc
11c11
< #/sbin/clean_desk_icons #v4.02 tidy up drive icons first.

I made a utility to rename files (version 1.2).
It works well in Akita.

I've had good success with Akita!!!
When I click on html files they open up properly
Also when I removed my USB stick the disk icon showed that it
wasn't mounted but it still remained ( a feature??)
Then when I put the USB stick back in, the disk mounted easily again.

I have now...
Download: akita-linux-beta8-k2.6.32.55.iso
size: 125mb, md5: cf224c040d7436e74b36efdc135ee9f2
- this one uses SFS4, not SFS3 - you might need to convert your SFS files
- just click on a SFS file, if it needs converting, you will be asked...
(ignore the 'zdrv_420.sfs' file in this ISO, you don't need it!)
- Purely for testing, playing and bug finding, if anyone wants
- It uses the same old initrd.gz file, but with a custom DISTRO_SPECS file inside..
- no framebuffer or zdrv this time
Known problems:
- cannot get Nvidia drivers working for this kernel (tested shinobars & Barry Ks w5 pkgs)
- no ext4: init script, rc.init, libparted, gparted, other places
- wi-fi (wireless) not tested,
- only tested in PUPMODE 5
- otf_sfs_loader doesn't support aufs.. still got shinobars 'sfs_load' anyway..
- no unmountable drive mounted at /initrd/pup_ro2, or $PDEV1...?
Includes some new updates, added after original beta 8:
| Code: | April 11
- fixed: pup_event_frontend_d calling snapmergepuppy during 'make', 'cmake', etc (thx Karl Godt)
- fixed: ROX pinboard icon alignment and refreshing (thx shinobar):
- in /sbin/clean_desk_icons, /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d, ~/.xinitrc
- added to Akita repo: samba_client-3.0.26-akita.pet, 1.4mb
- updated pnethood: auto download and install 'samba_client-3.0.26-akita', if no samba found
- added to Akita repo and PPM:
- gens-2.15.5-akita.pet, 540k
- gens_gs_r7-i486-akita.pet, 733k
- gens_gs_r7_DOC-i486-akita.pet, 1.5mb
- snes9x-1.53-akita-i486.pet, 538k
- snes9x_NLS-1.53-akita-i486.pet, 35k
April 12
- updated: /usr/local/sfsconvert/sfsconvert: use SFS dir as default workdir, if SFS was given
- fixes in xfce_minimal-4.2.3.2-akita.pet, in Akita repo
April 13
- updated to Woofy 0.9: uses wmswitcher, check deps, better GUIs, fixes
- updated wmswitcher to 0.19, supports e17, 'chroot' style feature
- updated to yad .17.1.1
April 15
- fixed startup script: /etc/init.d/rc.pup_event_frontend_d
- fixes in /usr/sbin/drive_mounter.sh, dont offer to unmount $PUPDRIVE
- fixed display and removal of LABEL in ROX, /media and JWM drive icons:
- fixed /usr/sbin/blkid-name-generator
- fixed /usr/sbin/create_jwmrc_drives.sh
- fixed /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d
- fixed ~/Startup/gtk-mnt-links
- fixed SFS-Edit:
- unsquash any SFS version
- other related fixes |

Akita Linux with newer kernel |
|
Hi Scott, been very busy lately, but I have been trying out the new Beta 8 with new kernel. Only problems I am having seems to be with flash not working with Opera or QtWeb browsers and several .pets I have tried to load do not install properly. Opera and QtWeb both complain about flash plugin missing, unless I install Mozilla based browser also. All in all, very nice! Right now I am running the new Legacy OS4, and I am liking it a lot. Akita seems to be pretty well sorted out. I will continue to try it out also and if I find any other problems, I will post here. Thanks, Rob
P.S. Not sure why Akita is not getting any more responses that what it is, as I can definitely tell that you are putting a lot of work into this. I wish more people would look at it.

I noticed this is starting to happen as well.. not sure what's going on there...
I manually copy the libflashplayer.so file out to somewhere, and put it back again, seems to fix it most times...
Maybe I should update the Opera package.

Thanks for the feedback once again! I know I should try other pups for ideas and stuff,
but I haven't booted anything other than Akita in about a year now...

Up to them... I'm guessing most who try it have new hardware, and it fails miserably..
But Akita is my everyday (and only) OS, so I don't mind upgrading it, then sharing..

I, for one, appreciate Akita, and look forward to each release. I keep recommending it to other people with older hardware too. Maybe little feedback is sometimes good feedback - it means people are happy

still has the old zdrv in the iso though (sfs3 with the .25 kernel)
damn, I didn't even get to install it before finding a bug

LOL, whoops... That explains why the ISO was bigger than expected... I thought i deleted the zdrv from it...
