(Solved) Open Office SFS won't work on Racy 5.3 |
|
I posted this issue in the Racy bugs thread as a bug report. I'd appreciate some help here, if you can, in at least working around the problem.
Computer:
Acer Aspire 5349-2635
OS is Racy 5.3 v5 just installed.
Steps:
I used the Install SFS loader from the desktop icon to download the official openoffice-3.1.1-sfs4.sfs package from the official repository, and dropped it into /mnt/home/, set the boot manager to load it in the usual way, and rebooted.
Icons for OO came up on desktop as usual. Clicked on Write, and the OO registration dialog came up (usual for first use).
I didn't want to register so I answered no to that, Went through the menus, and clicked the Finish button. Wizard disappeared and......nothing. No Write program opening.
So I clicked on Write gain and was presented with the same registration dialog.Running through that again gave the same result.
So I tried opening a terminal, and running "swriter". That opened the same registration dialog, and I went through the same procedure, and got the same result. The dialog just closed and ... nothing. It failed silently -- there were no terminal error messages. Just return of the input line and blinking cursor, like a normal program close.
So,any suggestions on getting Open Office on Racy? Is there another SFS (preferred), or .pet that will work on this late kernel OS?
Thanks for your help!

Hello, vtpup.
It could be a number of things. Difficult to say. OOo is a complex program.
Various questions come to mind...
Did OOo create its usual user directories in ~/.config/.openoffice.org/3?
Is there anything already in
/root/.config/.openoffice.org/3/user/backup?
/root/.config/.openoffice.org/3/user/store?
If so, empty them and retry.
Have you tried launching it independently of the bootloader ?
This would mean : unhook it from the bootloader and reboot.
Then, go in /mnt/home and mount the OOo sfs.
Then go to /mnt/+OOo[version number].sfs//opt/openoffice/program/
and click on "soffice".
Have you tried a more recent v. of OpenOffice?
Have you tried 0micko's script to download and install a recent LibreOffice?
How much RAM does your computer have? Could it be that OOo does not have enough room to launch the writer program?
In the same line of thought, can you reach the general options panel and increase the RAM devoted to OOo to 100-128 Mb ?
Sight unseen like this, it is difficult to help. I hope you'll have some inspiration about a solution!
Best of luck.

Musher0, sorry I should have posted here sooner. I ended up trying Libre Office which loaded fine from the sfs. Hadn't realized OO had forked, but read a little about it, so I thought I'd try it.
Also Feodorf confirmed that the OO 3.1 sfs does not work with racy -- probably it should be removed from the official Racy repository, therefore. He did suggest Open Office 3.2 and provided a link, and that one apparently works with Racy, so maybe it should be the official version in the repo.
I haven't tried it yet, because I already downloaded and installed Libre. But grateful for yours and FeodorF's help!
In case someone else reading this has the problem, the good version of Open Office 3.2 for Racy is here:
