xorg-7.5, problem for older computers? |
|
Trying to run various Lucid pups on a Dell Latitude C400 (p3, 1.2 ghz, Intel i830m graphics chipset), but when booting off the CD, the screen goes blank apparently at the point where it probes the video hardware. Older pups, like 4.1, work fine on the Dell C400.. So far I've tried Lupu 5, Lucid 5.25, and Lucid 5.28 with all the same results (these disks boot fine on a newer computer). I ran across another forum post which mentioned that the Lucid pups use the newer Xorg 7.5 which doesn't support older graphics chipsets, and that older pups use Xorg 7.4. I also tired the "retro" version of Lucid 5.25 that uses the 4.31 kernel, but have the same problem (the "retro" version still uses the newer Xorg 7.5). Is the Xorg 7.5 the likely reason for my trouble, and if so, is it possible to have a Lucid pup distro with the older Xorg 7.4?

Probably; you did say 4.x Puppies (with the older Xorg) work OK on your C400.
You might want to try Wary, which BarryK specifically builds for older hardware.
It has an older Xorg version (7.3, I think).

Hi KP3FT,
Wary does have xorg 7.3 and works very well with a Pentium 3 having 256 mb of ram or better. When setting up your video support, try choosing the Xorg driver instead of having the installer probe the hardware. The driver you should select is simply called "Intel" and provides support for your chipset as well as a few others in the 800 and 900 series.
Hope this helps,
Monsie

Thanks guys... installed Wary and it works great on the computer. It's a dedicated church computer for recording sermons and playing music through the sound system, and later for connecting to a projector. Boots up in 38 seconds and ready to record. Recorded audio sounds wonderful with mhWaveEdit, no artifacts that I can hear. Recorded the pastor last night at the service, played it back through the sound system, and couldn't tell the difference between the "live" and the mp3.
