I'm waiting for someone to make an mp3 player with open-source specifications. None of the mp3 players I've used do everything the way I'd like, and there's no way to customize them. Their operating systems are proprietary.

I know that at least on the earlier iPods, you could install an alternate (open-source?) firmware - which wasn't Linux, IIRC, but they did also have an experimental version of Linux for those iPods. I don't remember exactly what it was, offhand (Rockbox?), or whether it works on the newer iPods or any other players... but at least it allowed some additional features, like playback of FLAC or OGG.

Then again, there's always someone out there trying to get Linux to run on whatever devices they can (heck, if they can get it to run on a Furby... ), so I wouldn't be surprised if there was indeed such firmware available for some of the more popular players, these days.

Edit: I was right, it is indeed Rockbox:

...and, from the list on the homepage, appears to support an interesting number of players. Haven't found a mention yet, offhand, as to whether or not it's using any sort of variant on Linux, though.

look for Android based mp3 players on Amazon. They are about the same size as an an Android phone and will support a lot of codecs like ogg and FLAC. Another idea for a project, I believe that a second-hand Android phone might be re-purposed as a music player.
