Using pemasu's wondrous dpup exprimos, I'm successfully running puppy linux on a Lenovo S10-3t (a hybrid netbook/tablet).

The rub is, the S10 has no manual fan control, and even when I'm using the lowest level available in cpu frequency_scaling, my idle temperature continues to climb high into the 50's Celsius until the fan roars on.

This decreases battery life considerably, but even using fluppy (or other linux flavors completely), I can't get a stable idle temperature.

Using a late-model kernel (probably 2.8.*, with a 3.* being the optimum), could someone recommend a low-heat puppy?

Or do they all pretty much burn at similar cpu temperatures?

I exeriece the same problem with eee neerbooks.
Basically - is an ardware problem.

I suggest you test a little moare the tools that saluky have.
- slleep mode - if it works it will cool your pc
- cpu frequency_scaling - thilstehood high 80% - means that the cpu will be lower untill it will need moare than 80% cpu - you can limit also cpu max speed in lower that will never reach the max.
- falash block in the browser- it will consume less cpu while borwsing - but allow you to play falsh with one click.
- ask in the saluky post - to be shure that cpu frequency_scaling - will be not in conflict with a acpcktool(power-saving) so if you set up freq-scaling it will not will be changed from power saving .

Maybe there are some manual control of the fan, but is it dangerous to change.

Many thanks for your advice and links. I'm working with saluki right now. I'm having some trouble with xorg and the touchscreen (which I do not have with dpup exprimo), but I *think* saluki burns a little cooler.

As for that good link you sent, I have gone there, and find that the fan control doesn't work for the Lenovo netbook models. I guess the netbook BIOS are very stripped-down.

Isn't "power saving" the same as playing with settings in cpu_freq_scaling? Or are they two separate things?

Firak, I still use an early puppeee on my eee 900. Works like a charm--22 second cold boot. Fastest load-up on any of my machines Smile

Underclocking is a known technique to improve reliability.
You can sometimes do this from the BIOS

Puppi does not have a BIOS

Many thanks to folks weighing in.

I have set cpu frequency_scaling, but the Lenovo only gives three speeds 1833, 1333, 1000.

I use the 1000mhz setting, and scaling when I'm surfing.

I've also literally propped up the netbook in the hopes that air circulation will save me a couple of degrees. I don't want to go for an actual cooling fan/cooling pad since that kind of defeats the purpose of a netbook's foormm factor.

Lobster, I wonder if the RaspberryPI will ever find its way to a laptop.
