How to use my plasma TV as a monitor? |
|
Hello!
You know? I thought this issue was easy to fix but it seems to be hard. So I will explain it more detailed:
I have a dell latitude c600 and a TV lg plasma 50pt250r. Also I purchase a VGA cable (RGB) and a S-video cable (TV has these ports). So It would be fantastic to use this TV like the monitor (for example to watch videos)
I had installed on the laptop Windows XP SP2, Lucid Puppy Linux 528 (last version 005), Slacko Puppy Linux 531
Also I installed the Graphic Card Driver (Slickpet test the graphic card and suggest the best driver: "mesa" or "xorg-high"). I installed mesa on Slacko and Xorg-high on Lucid. And I installed lxrandr too.
First I do all the wired connections between tv and laptop then I turned them on, then appears GRUB. When I press a few times FN + F8 then GRUB can be displayed only on TV.
- If I chose Windows XP Sp2, I could see the desktop only on TV (everything else was ok)
- If I choose Lucid or Slacko, I can see the desktop on TV only if Xorgwizard has VESA, I mean go to prompt / xorgwizard / vesa / probing video hardware - automatic probing of your monitor was unsuccessfully / then I have to choose between some generic (LCD, CRT,...): for example "C h31.5-48.5v40-70 LCD Panel 1024x768" / then I choose again 1024x768x24 / TEST / TEST X NOW / and the summary says "1024x768 pixels, 48,56 Khz Horizontal Syn frequency, 61,00 hz Vertical refresh frequency, driver VESA" / finally press FINISHED / write xwin / then appears the desktop. This way when I play a video for example with VLC media player and default configuration the full screen mode is wrong there is some pauses, lines, etc. sometimes in normal mode too)
- If I choose Lucid or Slacko, I can't see the desktop on TV if Xorgwizard has xorg (again the desktop is displayed on the laptop). I mean go to xorgwizard / xorg / probing video hardware - automatic probing of your monitor was unsuccessfully / then I have to choose between some generic (LCD, CRT,...): for example it's ok if I choose "C h31.5-48.5v40-70 LCD Panel 1024x768" / then I choose again 1024x768x24 / TEST / TEST X NOW / and the summary says "1024x768 pixels, 48,36 Khz Horizontal Syn frequency, 60,00 hz Vertical refresh frequency, driver r128" / finally press FINISHED / write xwin / then appears the desktop (only on laptop). This way when I play a video for example with VLC media player and default configuration the full screen mode is perfect (there isn't any kind of error)
- If I use the S-video cable the quality is the worst, so I only use VGA cable (RGB)
When Lucid Puppy Linux use vesa driver:
- Quickpet / File / Report Video / and show:
Video report: Lucid version 528
Chip description:
oem: Ati Mobile M3
Driver used by Xorg:
vesa
Video Mode used by Xorg:
Resolution: Depth 24 Depth: "Display"
- Quickpet / Driver / Test Graphic Card / and says "...the best addon driver is Xorg-High (for Lucid) and mesa (for Slacko). A few days ago I installed Xorg-High, but there is the same problem.
When Slacko Puppy Linux use vesa driver, the command "lspci -nn" shows:
# lspci -nn

When I go to prompt / xorgwizard / appears to choose "Xorg", "Choose", "vesa" ("...for the correct driver..."). Then I select "choose" / "r128 ATI", but again appears 3 options "Xorg", "Choose", "vesa" ("...for the correct driver..."), but there should appear to select the monitor... I can repeat the procedure, but there is the same problem (obviously I can select "vesa" but later there is no option to select "r128" driver, so in the end the driver will be "vesa"
When I go to prompt / xorgwizard / vesa / and I choose the option "Select If you know monitor frequency specs" by default appears: 31.5-48.5 KHz (Horizontal syn frequency), 56-72 Hz (vertical refresh frequency), then I change the ranges for example to 48.2-48.3; 59-60 / select 1024x768x24 / TEST / but the final values for vesa always are: 48.56 KHz, 61.00 Hz
When I go to prompt / xorgwizard / xorg / "Select If you know monitor frequency specs" / the ranges can't be changed as I explained previously.
QUESTIONS:
- Can anybody tell me why this TV can't show the desktop if Xorgwizard has xorg-r128 (by default)? I guess It's not a problem with drivers or resolution or freshrate, because the desktop can be displayed on TV if xorgwizard has the generic driver vesa.
- How could I fix this problem? I hope the descriptions are enough and somebody knows how to fix this issue!
Thanks a lot for reading this long post! Bye

hi FeodorF!
Those tables show the best resolution, refresh, etc. to use under MS Windows. Anyway as I told I can't change the refresh values.

From the Dell manual:
| Quote: | Using an External Monitor
When an external monitor is connected to the computer, the video image automatically appears on the external monitor's screen when you boot your computer.
To toggle the video image between the display, an external monitor, or both simultaneously, press <Fn><F8> on the keyboard. Press <Scroll Lock><F8> on an external keyboard if the External Hot Key option is enabled in the system setup program.
If the external monitor is turned off when you boot your computer, the computer still sends the video image to the external monitor, but you will not see an image on either the computer's display or the external monitor. To see an image, turn on the external monitor or switch the video image to the computer’s display by pressing <Fn><F8> on the keyboard or <Scroll Lock><F8> on an external keyboard if the External Hot Key option is enabled in the system setup program.
note.gif (515 bytes)
NOTE: If you are using your external monitor at a resolution greater than the display supports, the simultaneous display feature is disabled. To use the display, switch to a resolution that the computer supports, or disconnect the external monitor and restart your computer. |
I assume you are doing these steps?
In Xorgwizard
If you select test
After completing test
Other options should be available that will give you option to adjust refresh rate.
Select tweak.
Then tweak xorg config
To see what refresh options the video driver you are using supports.
With Puppy booted to desktop.
Run the console.
type xrandr
Hit enter
This gives list of all supported settings.

hi bigpup!
Many many times I did it. I have been following the instructions but this issue can't be solved (as I described it). That's the reason I have done this new post, to find someone who can help me.

From r128 support documents.
| Quote: | Dualhead
Note: The video BIOS on some laptops interacts strangely
with dualhead. This can result in flickering and problems
changing modes on crtc2. If you experience these problems
try toggling your laptop’s video output switch (e.g.,
fn-f7, etc.) prior to starting X or switch to another VT and
back. |
Making a new post does not help anyone.
What you have tried and what has been suggested, is important to know in helping.
I seriously do not think, someone is going to come along, that has your specific hardware and problem.
You can do a Google search for r128 external laptop monitor
and see all kinds of posts with the same problem.

1)http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=459013#459013
Windows program can give an information about monitor's characteristics, which are needful for "Xorg.conf".
2)Perhaps: "monitor-edid" w/o additional options can show the name of DISPLAY.
[2.1]"Quirky-1.40 OS"(booting from the CD): When the "xorgwizard" program has appeared after other programs, the "Xorg" button is my choice over there, and then "Probe", and then "OK", and then "EXIT".
So that, i don't have a configuration file for X-system as in those cases where i typed the "pfix=nox" option.
[2.2]Correct installation of "monitor-edid" is important.
[2.3]After correct installation "monitor-edid" will show something.
3)Perhaps: "ddcprobe" w/o additional options can give info about VIDEOCARD.

4)Another "Linux OS"("Ubuntu" or "Fedora" or another) with the similar kernel: Live-CD with "Gnome" or Live-CD with "KDE", or "Parted Magic", or "GParted", what perhaps will bring the "Xorg.conf" file to you.

In the beginning i would have tried to use "Parted Magic", then "GParted", and then "Ubuntu", where there is a lightweight window manager which is available through "apt-get" and yet there is a display settings wizard(i assume that there is such a thing for "Gnome" or "KDE").
I still store the two first CD-discs which are from the set of disks for installation of DVD-version of "Fedora-9". I can install "Fedora-9" just for getting the "yum" program, but in such a case i have to have an earlier created text file with information for "yum" package manager and an earlier created text file with commands which will give me an internet.
Downloading and installation eat lots of time. Maybe display settings wizard from "Parted Magic" or "GParted" will help.
Oh, by the way, in your case the most best operating system is "Linux Muzzy". Muzzy likes to eat clocks. It was a joke.
