qtractor 0.5.4 pet

#1 Post by darkcity »

After much messing about here is an attempt at packaging qtractor.

A multi track audio/ midi editor that is perhaps comparable to Ardour.
see http://qtractor.sourceforge.net/qtractor-index.html

==Installation==
1. Requires qt4.8, if not on your system install-
qt-4.8-polar-i486.pet download - more info at the qt4.8-polar thread (32MB / 82MB)

2. Requires jack, of not already installed-
(a)Remove any bits of jack present on system:
delete /usr/lib/jack/ (all files) and
delete library files starting with /usr/lib/libjack*
(check this even if jack has not been installed before, Slacko doesn't come with any part of Jack)

(b) Install jack-0.121.3-qjackctl-0.38-i486.pet - more info at the jack 0.121 thread

3. Install appropriate qtractor package-
Puppy 5.3.x Slacko qtractor-slacko-0.5.4-i486.pet
Puppy 5.2.x Lucid [url=https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... V9IbXZJUkk[/url]

==Known Issues==
Despite my best attempts to implement LV2 plug-in support this feature does not work correctly. Opening an LV2 'edit' window usually results in qtractor crashing.

DSSI plug ins not tested fully.

I'll try again, but not for a week or so, let me know how you go.

Hi darkcity,

got Qtractor running, but with lots of pops and crackles and x runs even at a high latency setting, I think it is something to do with jack 0.21?

Patching MIDI thru jack is confusing, but finally managed to record a midi track in Qtractor with the simple synth built in, but much popping and clicking.

I have been having great success with jack 0.18 (version 0.34) but running with that one,
Qtractor tries to open, and then closes. (THD, qt package installed).

Your Audacity 2 package works well with THD. (audacity lib all in one.pet+audacity src 2.pet)

Oh, and forgot to say thanks for getting Qtractor compiled!
It is good to actually try the prog out, it has all the basics in there midiwise.

Hi Smithy,

Thanks for the feedback-
got Qtractor running, but with lots of pops and crackles and x runs even at a high latency setting, I think it is something to do with jack 0.21?

Patching MIDI thru jack is confusing, but finally managed to record a midi track in Qtractor with the simple synth built in, but much popping and clicking.
I assume the pops and crackles happen at the same times as the x-runs? Are they present all the time, when you playback or when you record, audio/midi?

Does Jack 0.121 run without xruns if started without qtractor?
I have been having great success with jack 0.18 (version 0.34) but running with that one,
Qtractor tries to open, and then closes. (THD, qt package installed).
Were did you get Jack 0.18 from? To test qtractor run from terminal and report any errors? Was it a clean install of three-headed-dog (THD)?

I'd like to get jack 0.121 working as it has session and latency support, see (http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 003#615003). capicoso said he had problems compiling 0.121 so stuck with 0.118.

Yes the pops and crackles are going on all the time, obviously worse when trying to playback, but x run messages are appearing in qtractor every few seconds.

Jack 0.21 seems to be using more cpu to carry out the same things as jack 0.18, (not absolutely confirmed that just yet) and when minimising jack window whilst using reaper or podium there is a click like it is momentarily affecting the video driver.

But Qtractor should work ok with any flavour of Jack no?
I think I got the jack 0.18 from capicoso thread about ardour, works good.

Yes it was a clean install of THD, don't know what latency support is.
If Jack didn't have latency support in the first place, it would be just a pretty gui that blinked once in a while and did nothing! Or rather 1000msec after the event maybe :)

What would I type into the console to test Qtractor?

When you start Jack 0.121 on its own, are you getting the pops and clicks and xruns?

Qtractor should work with different flavours of Jack. To start from terminal just type qtractor - it will probably complain about missing libraries (ensure you use lowercase).

When I get time I will test 0.118.

Remind me what hardware your using, cpu, mem and audio?

I don't think it is getting x runs when it is just running on its own (Jack 0.21).
Console says "segmentation fault", nothing more when trying with jack 0.18
Clean install, qt pet added, jack 0.18 added, qtractor added.
This machine, Athlon xp2400, 1gig memory, Lexicon core, Soundblaster Live, Emu Tracker Pre.

segmentation fault I believe is to do with a memory allocation problem.

some of capicoso's PETs have been compiled with
/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.16

rather than 6.0.13 or 6.0.14 - i believe this has something to do with this error.

Will compile 0.118 when I get a chance . . .

Nice one dark city, take your time.
I wouldn't dare ask if you could get vst intruments support working in it :)

this is a version of Qtractor 0.5.5, should work with Lucid and Slacko (Still need qt4 and jack)

qtractor-0.5.5-i486.pet

Known Issues:

can not get LV2 plugins to work correctly
it has unofficial mime types (complete with spelling mishaps)

EDIT qtractor55 has been removed from sendspace, if anybody wants it PM me.
