Puppy 4.31 and Pulp

#121 Post by sindi »

Works great on Thinkpad 560x (233MHz, 96MB, using Pulp01) except can't get sound to work.
The laptop no longer boots from any hard drive so I boot to floppy and then use
loadlin from the hard drive.

Works perfectly on Thinkpad 600E (400MHz, 288MB, Puppy 4.31) with dead onboard mouse
which had to be disabled with a hex editor before the laptop would boot. Lilo.

Also on a Thinkpad 770E (266MHz, 228MB, Puppy and Pulp) which lost its floppy controller
and then stopped booting from any hard drive. I boot to MRCC (?) DOS Clean using
Ultimate Boot CD (a regular DOS boot CD won't do it) and then use loadlin.

These last two required manual setup of CD4237B sound and some adjustments to
BIOS (acpi=off, forget what else but full instructions were online some place).

The two slower models (did not check the 400MHz) crash using Puppy 4.31
mplayer but work with pulp mplayer, which appears to have been compiled
for i586 (PII without MMX2 or AMD-K6-2). The i586 version works on newer
computers and should be standard. (Also mplayer source code was set to
compile for i486 architecture with the i686 cpu - I hand edited when
I compiled my own mplayer).

--------------------

DELL D600 - everything works great except the 1.6GHz cpu runs at 600MHz even
with the correct power supply and Speedstep set correctly (I even downloaded
and ran an XP program for the Speedstep bug), and the battery
charges but the computer recently stopped being able to run off it even
fully charged (30 min > 0 min in one day). We had to replace the keyboard.
(Had two dead D600s to rob it from). Typing on it right now.
From a friend who was tired of replacing batteries.
It was running at full speed until halfway through a netflix movie
and has not gone back to full speed since, and keeps complaining about
the DELL 4.6A power supply that we provided it with (OEM, right one)
not being identifiable. Works the same with 3.5A. Lacks a floppy drive.

Another DELL 900MHz (don't have it here) works okay except that if you
use framebuffer console (in Pulp linux - I can't find fbcon for puppy 4.31)
sound disappears. In Puppy and also Basiclinux. It has an odd USB port which I
had to compile a special kernel for in Basiclinux but it works in Puppy.
This came to us because it was running at a crawl with XP and Norton (some
driver conflict). No antivirus needed any more. Sound was turned down
AND muted by alsaconfig but works now. This one only worked with the 2.6.30.5
kernel - with all other laptops I use the retro kernel but the hardware is
screwy in various ways.

A DELL Latitude 300MHz works well with puppy (if you plug in a keyboard,
since the onboard one finished dying over the course of a few days after
it came to me). Sound is crummy but usable. I had to change a BIOS setting
which was causing the CPU to run at very low speed during boot, and we
put black electrician's tape on the mouse buttons so they would stay put.

-----------------

Two Compaq AMD-K6-2 machines which need i586 mplayer:

Compaq Presario 1200 - 475MHz, 32MB onboard memory plus 128MB added and
a 200MHz swapfile. Pulp 01 (I started with 96MB).
Alsa sound works well (oss driver for via82cxxx does not play any sound).
I forget if I chose Xvesa or Xorg. Firepup 4 crashes with illegal instruction
when it loads, Seamonkey crashes with illegal instruction when I try
to access Google Voice, and Opera 9.64 has very scrambled video
(big black areas). I should try the other X. Basiclinux works with
all three browsers (Xfbdev) with no problems so it could be the
video. I will try to find Xfbdev for Pulp (4.12 kernel) or use
DSL linux instead. AMD-K6-2 runs slower than rated speed so
it takes forever to start the browsers anyway. Makes a nice radio
using lynx with lynx.cfg set to use mplayer as VIEWER/DOWNLOADER..
(Oddly enough, this one was given to us with no hardware problems
unless you count only 32MB RAM). 800x600x16 color. It has one
double-thick PCMCIA slot which is perfect for a red NIC card that
takes up the whole space and won't fit in most computers.

Compaq Presario 1675. 380MHz, 64MB onboard, and it recently stopped
recognizing the 128MB added RAM so won't run regular Puppy. It came
with Win2k (very slow boot now) and a power jack that needed to be
resoldered, and I had added Basiclinux, which worked fine except
yesterday the pcmcia port seems to have died (error message about
not finding a bridge) so I copied pulp to hda2 and attempted to
install lilo to dual boot with 2K. I set pulp as default and it
booted to Basiclinux. (I had to copy the bootsector via floppy).
I installed lilo to floppy and it booted partway into Pulp then
'loading kernel modules' and it stopped. Don't know if this is
related to the design or the broken pcmcia. I had hoped to
try with USB wireless. Might try DSL live CD with USB wireless,
or use itas an MP3/CD player with pulp. Sound works fine in Basiclinux.

----------------------

A 900MHz HP Pavilion N5415 that came to us with dead pcmcia
and some odd controller problems (XP sometimes sees the CD-RW
drive to write to but can always read from it,
and sometimes finds USB headphones). Works fine with Puppy.
Crummy sound unless you plug in speakers or headphone. Does 1280
resolution but with Basiclinux/mplayer DVDs play in the middle
half of it at 800 and won't fill the screen (Xfbdev, Xvesa,
svga, vesa, fbdev).
Gxine (Puppy) and SMplayer (XP) I think do fullscreen.
A few keys are loose but go back on easily. Runs quite hot.

-----------------------
Winbook XLi -300MHz, upped it to 256MB RAM, comes with both
types of laptop mouse, both PS/2, both recognized by Basiclinux
but Puppy could not find either so I had to plug in serial or
USB mouse. Sound works in Basiclinux but could not make it
work in Puppy. (Crummy sound anyway). Basiclinux keyboard
and mouse freeze up when you do anything graphical due to
some kernel bug in 2.4.31 and earlier. I installed 2K and
everything works, except we had to take apart and repair
the floppy drive.

----------------------------
Gateway Solo 2000 200MHz 110MB RAM (three slots using some
strange RAM and that is all I could round up), given to us
because video did not work in Win98 with text expansion.
Sound appears to have died (I think it worked with Win98)
but it works okay otherwise with puppy 4.31. High quality
screen and keyboard, quite light especially if you remove
floppy, CD-ROM and battery.

These were all given to us free by friends and other people
whose computers or other things we fixed. The under 300MHz
models are quite slow to load graphical browsers, and semi-
recent browsers need more than 96MB total RAM. So my cutoff
for puppy on the internet is 200MHz 96MB. Lots of those
around free for the fixing. You can even sort of watch
Youtube at 400MHz (a series of stills).

Otherwise....I am always really interested at reading what each of you are running Puppy on.
My EEPC-701 is running pupeee. The pupeee is installed on one of my 3 USB hard drives that I can plug into the 3 USB ports. This means that I have a machine with 4.5T of hard drive. The purpose of this machine is just to show it can be done. I can edit videos on it.

Via Epia 5000 & Puppy 3.01

#125 Post by xKF »

As a 15-year Linux user I've had many systems I've custom built, most of them being ITX-based. I love small and quiet!

My most recent creation was built from old parts. It consists of:

1. Via Epia 5000 motherboard with a Via Samuel 2 533MHz CPU
2. On-board Trident Cyberblade graphics
3. 384MB of SDRAM
4. 20GB 2.5" IDE HDD

I've loaded it up with Puppy 3.01 and can play smooth DivX files with it!

I'm really impressed with the hardware being used/recycled to run Puppy! This means that $MS has failed in forcing "outdated" (according to them) lots of working computers into the landfill. I was running an ASUS, AT mobo with 458 Mhz CPU until a couple of months ago when it finally gave it up. Why throw perfectly working computer hardware into the dump just because some overly rich guy says, "It's time to upgrade for I can make more bucks."? Some of us can't afford to buy bleeding edge computers every two years of so.
I'm running two computers with Puppy right now.
I just installed Wary 5.0 to a just built computer. Mobo: new Soyo SY-K7VME, PW-450 PSU, Video Card: Nvidia 32MB, PCI Video Graphics Card, 512 MB RAM (Kingston), Floppy drive, CDRW-DVD-ROM, LITE-ON SOHC-5239V06C, CPU is AMD Athlon XP 1800+, socket A, 1.53 Ghz, HDD is Seagate ATA 100, 7200 RPM, 20 GB, BIOS dated as 2003. Monitor is Dell CRT at 1024 x 768 x 256 , Modem is US Robotics internal hardware modem, PS/2 mouse, 2 button, run through KVM switch.
I tried installing an Epson NX215, USB connection printer, but it didn't work. The only driver offered was the NX210 and it does not drive the printer. The printer does react, but only spits out empty page after empty page. I have the installation files for this printer and got it working on Slackware 13.0, but not fully functional because the kernel needs to be at least 2.6.3xxx. It should work on the Puppy Wary 5.0 kernel, but I don't know how to install the installation files in a Puppy distro. The files offered for installing the NX215 are either .deb or .rpm. Which would I use install in Puppy Wary 5.0?
Today is my first day running Wary 5.0, so I haven't fully tested everything, but what I see at present is really good.

i got my toy running puppy 4.3.1 works great on a dell latitude cpx j650 gt with 512mb memory and 40gig hdd.
no problems on a custom built either , its a abit nf-7s ver 1.1 nvidia chipset , xp athlon 2600+ with 2gig memory @333mhz and 2 ide seagate barracuda IV 7200r.p.m. hdd's and 128mb ati video card (9200 series) and 400w psu and other cards too .

i cant tell you how many windows units i have fixed with puppy and rescued files, but i have got some people to convert to linux and they are using puppy right now.

rerwin, just keep up the good work and we'll keep these old units out of the land fill and in hands of people that will use them and apreciate them.

I moved to Puppy 5.2.5 on my ACER TravelMate 5511AWLMi
- AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology MK-36 2 GHz, 512KB L2 cache
- ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 HyperMemory
- 80GB HDD
- 1GB DDR2

Runs flawlessly, except from the ATI Radeon drivers, for which I cannot find a way to have a working/non-crashing GL driver.

I added LibreOffice, Pidgin, Thunderbird, Firefox, Scummvm, ZSNES, PDFEdit and Transmission.

i am using:

amd phenom 2 x6 1090t
8gb ddr3 dual channel
500gb hdd
gigabyte ga78 am3 + mobo (waiting keenly for bulldozer)
it has built in radeon 300 gfx, but i am getting a decent card in the next month or so

it all works perfectly, and a lot better than the "big" distros, which have got absolutely abysmal video hardware support (ubuntu gives me 1050 in glxgears with a radeon 6870)
in the time it took me to boot windows, edit this signature, save it, and shutdown, an identical spec pc was able to boot puppy, start songbird, and reboot 3 times.

lol

HP dc7800 SFF INTEL CORE 2 DUO E6750 2.66GHz/2GB 160GB HDD

This is a small form factor HP desktop. From the specs you can see it's no slouch.
I'd really like to see others get in on these used/refurbs, so with your permission, here's a picture and details.
Bought in Dec/2012 for $47+25 shipping!!! I'm running about four Puppy's, (currently)...
Operating System: Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.12 (thanks Pemasu)
Desktop Environment: Enlightenment

Anyway, this is not spam, just good sense. The link takes you to the LIVE auction details.

Running Slackopuppy 5.5 on a Toshiba Portege 3410CT with 400Mhz Celeron (Coppermine) 196mb ram, 8mb Savage graphics and a 40gb 5400 rpm drive.

I'm very fond of Puppy, but it works terrible on this computer. Since it loads into ram, it eats most of it. And when swap kicks in the computer borders on overheating because can't cool the 5400rpm drive. And it doesn't have any sound, but the latter is probably a hardware issue because it didn't have sound in Windows XP either.

If you watch your ram usage and avoid heavy websites by loading their mobile versions, it works reasonably well. Been typing away at it for two days. I also installed Dillo, Arora and I'm running IceWM as a window manager. I'm gonna uninstall some build in apps and tweak it a bit more.

I'm also going to put puppy on a Thinkpad T30 later this week, so that'll probably work better.

@Doc_152,
Welcome to the kennels :)
I have a Toshiba Portege 3480CT with 196MB RAM, 500MHz Coppermine PIII CPU. I run an partition with XP on the 7200rpm 160GB HD, but it is untouched compared to the Pupplets I run on it frugally - Fluppy 013 (413 frugal), MacPup520 (lucid), Simplicity 10:10, ZenPup5, TEENpup2010min, and MJINpup. Perhaps you might like to look at something in that range for optimal performance - I'm no expert on Slacko, but you might like to consider the latest Wary for that machine, or even some of pemasu's recent Upup Precise versions (chose retro kernels, though all boast near-latest packages like FF18 I think) if you want function with maximum compatibility with whatever-the-hottest-flavour file format (docx, xlsx etc). Lucid 528 would probably be my choice, with the latest Frisbee modifications from rerwin to make wifi.pcmcia a breeze...

Lenovo T60 with 4GB RAM, 1.66 GHz dual core CPUs running Dpup 5X14, LightHouse 64beta, PolarPup5, Saluki v6, MacPup528, Akita13 (will upgrade that soon, sc0ttman).

Opentec Openfire Series2 (RT686 mbo with Coppermine PIII 500MHz, 512MB PC1200 sdram (I think)) testing Upup precise 3.7.2 for permanent home on usb-flash, no HDD or cd-burner. This is similar machine to an Amrel Rocky II RT686.

[EDIT: heh - Doc_152 in reply to your query below I was donated that 3480CT for the very reason that "it wouldn't run XP". I tried to de-bloat XP as much as possible with tips from the MSFN forum - getting rid of background "services", swapfile optimisation etc - heck I might have even gone through the XPlite route (can't remember!:) ) and it ran absolutely fab. (Within reason...) I used to also comb sites like 'Gizmo's Freeware' for "performance enhancement" stuff too as I couldn't justify paying for MSOffice upgrades and other antiviral bloatware etc etc on that machine. Soon I realized that I was practically running everything under the alien concept of "Open Source", and after giving the MS OS the hurl - found that Puppy did absolutely everything I needed - faster, more reliably and without the nagware. To mix metaphors - that 3480ct was the springboard for me to jump the MS ship while the Emperor fiddled with Vista, Win7 and Win8. My fingers won't burn again for MS :)
Glad you like Wary! I'm not sure whether anyone has released a properly-polished Wary pupplet yet, but can I also suggest you look at ttuuxx's 214XTop10 for that machine if you want the fully serviceable Puppy experience on your Toshie laptop. In my experience of all the Pupplets I tried, once the ISO size gets above 200MB then general performance tended to lag - don't forget a decent swap partition, about 500mb is what I was using but apparently 256mb is probably the 'sweet spot'. I remember that probably the biggest performance boost was when I upgraded the original 40GB 4200rpm HDD - literally it was like getting a new computer. Cheers]

EDIT2: just saw your Edit2... sorry to see that Lucid528 was a bit of a hog - the LibreOffice+Java version runs fine on my RT686 but then 512MB RAM is like another planet... On the Portege, all my installs have been Frugal but apparently some performance improvements are seen if you do a Full install of whatever Puppy you wind up choosing. I reckon you are well on the right track though - stick with the earlier kernels you can, stay as light/small as possible like the BK's Official releases and only install your extra software on an as-needs basis (office etc) - heck you got over the PCMCIA bootup hurdle, you won't have any problems customizing your software requirements... Hmmm we might be hijacking this thread - someone might ask us to take our Toshie toys elsewhere ;)
