Ralink 5370 USB dongle - How do I make this work? [SOLVED]

#1 Post by Chili Dog »

Silly me, I went and bought the cheapest usb wifi thingy on eBay, and now it won't work with Puppy.

Is there a way to make it work? Do I have to compile the module (it came with a script - said it was Linux-compatible)? How?

There's a folder on the little cd with windows drivers, but I've never got ndiswrapper working.

I'd love to have internet on my computer again.

Chili Dog:

""""""""
Youse hid this...>>> Realtek 8187L....oops.
Saw it after I posted.

Still....want the brand......PLEASE.

::::::::

Tell us the brand mate...and model etc.

A real turn off for anyone trying to give out help.
And personally for me a pet hate.

Makes me want to don my Mandrake the Magician hat.

My second turn off...people don't reply back...
whether we helped with a fix...or not.

At least we can scan other threads for a linux Fix.

Maybe post back a >> read me << or >> inf file etc.

Chris.

::::::::::::

Mandrake >>> moment.

""

Why people get poor answers.

They do not post their hardware.

They do not post their exact Puppy version.

They do not reply that our help works for them out or not.

They do not Edit their posts as solved.

Then they get ticked off that Béèm and myself amongst others,
give them a terse response.

Mandrake the Magician does not reside on the Puppy Forum.

But many caring souls do (myself excluded).

We are happy to help, some of us even love a problem.

So help us out here chum.

A thousand word complaint when the make is right in the title.

I didn't waste my time reading it.

But this is the product.

Say, Chili, you don't happen to work in the State Department do you?

According to the link, the chipset is Ralink 5370

The State Department? Why no, but it must be nice having a government job.

What it says on the website notwithstanding, the CD with the drivers on it is where I got the chipset version info.

I'm running Slacko. :D

Did you try a Barry K version. I've got a O' cheapo USB button for 7 dollars, PPA3 says its a rt2800 but that is not what was on the package. Best 7dollars spent (included free shipping, crazy)

I've got a full hard drive install. I don't want to have to delete it just for a usb dongle.

I just want to know how to make it work. There is a script that it comes with that is supposed to compile a module, but it fails with "config.h not found". (Yes, I've linked the kernel sources.)

There's also Windows drivers if it was possible to use ndiswrapper, but my efforts in this regard have been less than satisfactory.

You might want to PM a Aitch on how he got his to work maybe.

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 747#574747

Searching RT8187L brings up a bunch of dead end foreign sites posts for me.

Supposedly RT8187L has had kernel support for quite some time.

Maybe a

Code: Select all

cat /proc/bus/usb/device
and a

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
and a

Code: Select all

uname -a
in Slack0 may shed some more light in this thread also.

It is not a Realtek adapter!
Realtek is a chipset maker and not related to this
device sold under the name of Tomtop.

It has a Ralink chipset.

Always best to do a little research before purchasing
hardware.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.
Eeepc 8g 701, 900Mhz, 1Gb ram.
Full installs

In the spirit of inquiry, let's suppose the thing has a Ralink 5370 chipset like the ebay page claims. How would Chili make it work?

I'd give this a try:

Isn't this for Lucid Puppy 5.1 - 5.2.8?

Here is a link to Ralink support for linux drivers:
http://www.ralinktech.com/en/04_support ... php?sn=501

The download for the 5370 chipset is the 3rd one down.

Okay; and now you're going to compile the drivers and
make pets for the latest versions?

I was wrong. Upon further inspection, there is a "Ralink 2070 3070 3072 5370 5372" folder on the CD - and 6 Realtek folders. They must include every driver for all of their products on this one CD.

Code: Select all

cat /proc/bus/usb/device
gives "No such file or directory"

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
gives eth0 and lo, possibly because when I was messing with one of the Internet wizards I chose "blacklist this so it doesn't load at boot" or some such thing. (Ya, I'm dumb.)

No wonder ndiswrapper wasn't working, it wasn't even the right driver.

Looks like I've got some more messing around to do. :)

Thank you very much everybody for the help.

Ok, so I wiped the partition, reinstalled Slacko, linked to the kernel sources, ran the install.sh script in the Ralink folder, and it seemed to finish with no errors. I ran "depmod", rebooted, and clicked the "wlan0 Ralink RT2800 USB wireless" option in Simple Network Setup.

Sadly, it says "Failed to activate interface 'wlan0. Sometimes this is a temporary problem. Go back to the main window, and you can try again..."

Clicking "View log of attempted connection" gives:

Code: Select all

phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.

Bummer.

Good night.

Buy 1 each of that companys 42 wireless devices and your
driver cd will come in handy (if you're installing Windows).

Or: go to the link I gave you for instructions from
Tempestuous on how to make it work in Lucid.

Inspiron 700m, Pent.M 1.6Ghz, 1Gb ram.
Msi Wind U100, N270 1.6>2.0Ghz, 1.5Gb ram.

Chili Dog,
You need the firmware "rt2870.bin"!
Put the attach file in " /lib/firmware " unplug and replug the adapter and surf!

the module your usb device is rt2800usb! its in your puppy but not the firmware!

You can download it from address: http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=002 ... 9329972239
