Precise Puppy beta1, June 3, 2012

#181 Post by Billtoo »

I moved my flash drive install over to a pc with a Nvidia graphics
card.
After installing kernel_src-3.2.18-patched.sfs I downloaded and installed the
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-295.53.run file.

Precise Puppy, version 5.2.58 on Sun 3 Jun 2012

Chip description:
0.0 VGA compatible controller
NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] (rev a1)
oem: NVIDIA
product: GF108 Board - 1071v0p1 Chip Rev

X Server: Xorg
Driver used: nvidia

X.Org version: 1.11.3
dimensions: 1920x1080 pixels (524x292 millimeters)
depth of root window: 24 planes

# glxgears
62930 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12585.816 FPS
63104 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12620.628 FPS
63119 frames in 5.0 seconds = 12623.742 FPS
#

The nvidia proprietary driver compiled without problems or warnings.
I have no idea how to make a pet of the Proprietary Nvidia driver,
sorry.

EDIT: I changed the 2 lines in the xorg.conf that 01micko suggests in the next message and it fixed a problem with taking screenshots of video.
Also, the vlc sfs from racy works in Precise, at least if does with the proprietary nvidia driver installed.

Ok on my radeon... but there is a bug. GLX is disabled in the xorg.conf, and DRI, an oversight I suspect. Once I commented those lines acceleration works with the radeon driver.

As you can see there is a bug in report-video (for a long time) where vesa is reported, radeon is actually loaded.

Tested heavy encryption on doing a save, worked fine.
Ethernet was not persistant, due to that I have 2 ethernet cards I suspect. It was auto detected on first boot (onboard forcedeth) but on next boot I had nothing, but the forcedeth was assigned "eth1". The pci realtek was eth0. Don't know which was assigned which at initial boot (no save).
Played most video and audio formats I have, including 3gp.
Loaded Libreoffice-3.5.4 (prepared in slacko) and it worked fine.
Images- png, jpeg, svg seem fine.

One point of note, I only have a browser open and there seem to be a lot of cpu cycles (xload). :? . Slacko and FatDog barely move xload unless I'm compiling. CPU temperature is up about 5 degrees.

Geany colors

#183 Post by mavrothal »

Geany has "funny" colors in screens with 16 bit depth.
I remember having seen some comment on Pemasu's Precise but no solution.
Even if you get new color schemes for geany, the problem persists.
Googling for it, looks like an Ubuntu problem though I came across a likely bug in Fedora 17.
Anyone has any idea?

Does it need to be a .pet? I am testing the latest Precise Puppy beta now and have loaded Billtoo's .sfs VLC and it seems to be working.
EDIT - Or maybe not, audio seems jittery but this is now on a different machine. Anyone else tried it?

Hello Barry
Anyone got an ATI/radeon video chip to test?
I have the integrated RS880G graphics. With Precise B1 it is still nearly as broken as it was previously.

On first boot, dri and glx are disabled by xorg.conf, which is just as well because, with KMS enabled, Xorg has a fatal error and aborts without loading the keyboard.

On selecting Radeon in xorgwizard, xorg won't start because there are no driver modules for it to load, in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers. So it is necessary to copy them over from the driver backup folder.

With KMS disabled the Radeon R600 driver will load to the point where 2D acceleration is enabled, but AIGLX has various errors.

Code: Select all

[ 13.900] (II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
[ 13.900] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
[ 13.900] drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)
[ 13.900] drmOpenByBusid: Searching for BusID pci:0000:01:05.0
[ 13.900] drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
[ 13.900] drmOpenDevice: open result is 10, (OK)
[ 13.900] drmOpenByBusid: drmOpenMinor returns 10
[ 13.900] drmOpenByBusid: Interface 1.4 failed, trying 1.1
[ 13.900] drmOpenByBusid: drmGetBusid reports pci:0000:01:05.0
[ 14.583] (EE) AIGLX error: r600 does not export required DRI extension
[ 14.584] (EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
[ 14.657] (II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized swrast
[ 14.657] (II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0
AIGLX falls back to using LLVM software rasteriser, which also has an error and falls back to using swrast.

Also there is no modesetting because KMS is disabled, and R600 does not support userspace modesetting.

So adding LLVM did allow the loading of xorg to complete, but nowhere near the right answer.

I'm not a linux expert but I have been investigating this by reference to Fatdog 600a2 where the Radeon R600 configures itself correctly on the same motherboard.

The fatal error with KMS enabled is:

Code: Select all

[ 13.257] (EE) RADEON(0): [dri] RADEONDRIGetVersion failed because of a version mismatch.
[dri] This chipset requires a kernel module version of 1.17.0,
[dri] but the kernel reports a version of 2.12.0.[dri] Make sure your module is loaded prior to starting X, and
[dri] that this driver was built with support for KMS.
[dri] Aborting.
I did find a bug report filed for Arch for this error, and the opinion was that it was related to the version of xf86-video-ati/radeon and they had fixed it by reverting to an earlier version. But I don't think it was conclusive.

Precise has 6.14.99 git 20111219
Fatdog has 6.14.4 which was released on 28th March 2012.

I can't find any sign of updates for Ubuntu, but there are from Debian. But they are compiled for xorg 1.12, so I couldn't try them.

The other difference that I noticed was the that output from

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep drm
reports a different radeon version: 1.33.0 for Precise and 2.13.0 for Fatdog.

From Precise Puppy:

Code: Select all

I hope you understand this better than I do!

I also noticed that xorg on Precise B1 loads the modules twice and tries to load fglrx. A3 did not do this, but I don't think it makes any difference.

nvidia driver for precise

#186 Post by shinobar »

For your convenience:
nvidia-glx-sdl-295.53-precise-beta.sfs for kernel 3.2.18.
http://shino.pos.to/party/bridge.cgi?puppy/precise/
Load, but do not execute nvidia-settings at this point of time. Just quit sfs_load, and run the xorgwizard.

Precise Puppy beta1, June 3, 2012

#188 Post by Billtoo »

I started with a fresh save file on my flash drive install.
I edited the xorg.conf file and changed 2 lines:
from: Disable "glx" #LOADGLX to Load "glx" #LOADGLX
and
from Disable "dri" to Load "dri"

Then restarted x, exited to the prompt and ran xorgwizard and chose
the nouveau driver.

14713 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2942.461 FPS

Network controller Ralink corp. RT3090 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe

Earlier I compiled qt-everywhere-opensource-src-4.8.2.tar.gz and made
pets of it.

The new2dir script worked great, it used to take up to 2 hours to make
the qt pets but only took a few minutes this time.

I also compiled the latest snapshot of QupZilla which is a QT web
browser.

I may make an sfs file of the qt482 pets + Umplayer + QupZilla later and upload I can upload it if you want it Barry?

Going to watch golf for a few hours now :)

EDIT:After using this for a while I find the nouveau driver works pretty well, not as fast as the proprietary driver but the skin tones in videos at cnn.com aren't purple and nexuiz plays well too.
I put an sfs together as well which has VLC,Umplayer, and QupZilla in it.

testing 5.2.58

#190 Post by sszindian »

Precise-5.2.58

Fresh pfx=ram boot
eth0: Auto configured and connected

Installed some programs from previous Precise Version... all installed and worked well so far.

HP 1050 Printer and Scanner setup OK after installing:
(1)hplip_print-3.11.10.pet
(2)hplip_scan-3.11.10.pet

WiFi: 'Did NOT Work' after configuration so... downloaded and installed peebee's 'broadcom_sta_v5.100.82.112_patched_x96_32-multi.pet'

After a reeboot... still 'NO WiFI' (it sure looked like it wanted to as the blue light on the Linksys stick would keep blinking.)

Un-installed the broadcom_sta_v5.100.82.112_patched_x96_32-multi.pet

Downloaded peebee's previous patch: 'precise_broadcom_experiment-3.pet' for the previous version of Precise that worked for me... Bingo... Worked again for 5.2.58 and am posting from WiFi now.

Linksys AE1000 usb stick
Belkin 300 router
Dell Pentium 4

Overall 5:2.58 seems fast however, checking back with an earlier version of Dpup-4.9.9 that BK developed that I added a 3.2.8 kernel to:

Same sites were checked with both!

4.9.9 loads web-pages with graphics on them much, much, much faster than 5.2.58 Hey... don't take my word on this, try it yourself!!!!! I'm just telling it like it is.

EDIT: Load tests were preformed using 'Iron-14' on both 4.9.9 and 5.2.58 Updating Precise to an 'Iron-18 browser' and adding Adobe Flash-11 now puts both versions on just about an equal-load basis!

Hi Indian

I am at a loss how to comment as the lsmod output you provided http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 488#629488 indicates that no Broadcom drivers are in use on your system - therefore the pets I make and the Experiment pets that rerwin has made (now up to #4 - http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... &start=349) should have no discernible effect on your system.

Just to confirm - can you post the output from the

Code: Select all

lspci -nn
lspci -vnn -d 14e4:
commands run on your system - this will give the hardware IDs for your wifi adapter. If your adapter does not include 14e4 for the manufacturer then its not Broadcom. Replace your manufacturer ID for 14e4 in the second command to get more information. Is your device in this list?

One quick thought - are you using Frisbee?? I know its not included in Precise 5.2.58 but it is by far the most reliable at creating and maintaining a wifi connection in my experience. See http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic. ... 8&start=80
Cheers

My testing has stopped on Precise-5.2.58 on this end for now... totally lost 'ALL' Internet connect and couldn't retrieve it, even eth0??? Tried even a pfix=purge and that only corrupted Precise even more.... no Icons, no files, just a bunch of Orange-Triangles on the desktop and in the file structures, can't get to anything to see what exactly went wrong so will probably just wait until next version to start again or until I have more time to start all over again????

One thing for certain... my configuration of the rt28000usb will not run OTB without the addition of the Expermint-3 patch on either 5.2.55 or 5.2.58 and I don't see anywhere I have any 14e4 so why it works with and not without... way way beyond me peebee????

Am posting this from Precise 5.2.55 'LIVE SAVE TO CD Multiburn' and from WiFi with the expermint-3 patch which is working 'perfect.' Beyond me????

Might just add here that WiFi and eth0 work very nice for me in Slacko-5.3 and Exprimo-11 without issues.

Hi Indian

As your wifi adaptor is not showing on the pci bus - it must be a usb adaptor??

The command to try is therefore

Code: Select all

lsusb
Your adaptor of course needs to be plugged in

Cheers
