PostPosted: Sun 27 May 2012, 06:23    Post_subject: virtualbox-4.1.14.sfs

virtualbox-4.1.14.sfs for Puppy 4.3.1 and most recent Puppies 5.x including Lucid Puppy and Slacko.
Available from http://shino.pos.to/party/bridge.cgi?puppy/opt/

If you have ever installed another or older virtualbox PET/SFS and trying new, remove old ones and delete '/lib/modules/*/misc/vbox*.ko', /opt/VirtualBox, if they are exists, before loading the new.

virtualbox-4.1.14.sfs has pre-build kernel modules for:
  • 2.6.30.5
  • 2.6.32.59
  • 2.6.37.6
  • 3.0.25
  • 3.1.10-slacko_paeA
  • 2.6.32.28
  • 2.6.33.2
  • 2.6.39.4
  • 3.1.10-slacko_4gA

For other kernels, you need corresponding kernel source and devx to build the vbox kernel modules.
Load the kernel source SFS, devx SFS and this virtualbox SFS. Then type 'virtualbox' on a terminal.

As for slacko, you may need to install 'mesa' package.

virtualbox-4.1.16.sfs has pre-build kernel modules for:
  • 2.6.30.5 (Puppy-4.3.x)
  • 2.6.32.28 (Lupu)
  • 2.6.32.59 (Wary-511)
  • 2.6.33.2 (Wary-5.3)
  • 3.0.25 (Racy-5.3)
  • 3.1.10-slacko_4gA (slacko-5.3.3)
  • 3.1.10-slacko_paeA (slacko-5.3.3 PAE)

For other kernels, you need corresponding kernel source and devx to build the vbox kernel modules.
Load the kernel source SFS, devx SFS and this virtualbox SFS. Then type 'virtualbox' on a terminal.

Updated to VirtualBox 4.1.16

Having FTP issues with one of my mirrors, but the other seems fine. I'll just link the working mirror for now.

Haven't made a package yet for Puppy 301 and 400, but the rest of the 4-series as well as Lucid, Slacko, and the latest Racy and Wary have packages available. I may also add packages for a few other versions in the next few days, and if I do I'll update this post with a quick note.

Thanks @TheAsterisk! and @Shinobar.

I am just getting to a point where I would like to host a VM environment to do PUPs testing. I would like to get a good start at doing such WHEN I saw this post.

For my clarification, does this mean that if I use any 1 of the 7 distros mentioned, I will NOT have to download kernels or DEVXs?

And, is there a description or manual or information tailored to just Puppy Linux VM operations (host and Guest) somewhere?

Thanks in advance

Sorry about my sporadic and prolonged absences. Some rather serious health issues in the family, I'm afraid.

You are correct. For those listed Puppy versions, the SFS is good-to-go out-of-the-box, excepting (maybe) high-performance graphics drivers, or maybe SDL libraries. No need for the DEVX or kernel sources, though.

Not that I know of, but I can search around a bit later this weekend.

Thankyou so much for your virtualbox pets! With Puppy Linux and VBox I can now run a VM straight off my USB stick without ever touching the host computer's HD. Have spent many hours this week trying different combos and can say without doubt this was the easiest way to do it. I have stored my virtual machine on a FAT32 partition of the USB stick so can even run it from my Windows VirtualBox install when connected to my home PC. (This needs to be the first partition on the stick, otherwise Windows won't see it)

The only issue with using FAT32 is the 4Gb restriction on the VDI. But I got a cut-down XP distro running pretty fast with 512Mb RAM allocation. If you give the FAT32 partition a Label in GParted you can then put a script in your Startup folder like "mount -L label /mnt/myfat" to ensure the VirtualBox config files don't get confused if the drive id of the FAT partition(e.g. sda/sdb etc..) changes when it is mounted on different hosts.

How about formating ntfs for the 1st partition on the USB device?

Some 64-bit VirtualBox 4.1.18 packages for FATDOG64 and LighthousePup have been added!

My access to 64-bit hardware is still a bit unpredictable, but I have managed to make packages for FATDOG64 versions 521 and 601, and for LighthousePup 514-B4. I just finished uploading them a short time ago, and they should now be listed in my packages guide, too.

I'll add this information to the main post.

ADDED some 'preview' packages for 4.2.0 RC2

As it's not a stable release, I won't include it in my main post or overall guide pages, but it should be visible and available from either of my mirrors, linked below.

UPDATED to VirtualBox release 4.1.22

ADDED some 'preview packages for VirtualBox 4.2.0 RC4

All packages, stable and pre-release, are now included in the packages guide.

I'm probably going to remove some of the older packages from my mirrors soon, but will retain those packages made for Puppy versions which have no newer packages available.

(Let me know if anyone needs a particular older package. I'll keep some local copies for at least a week if re-uploading is necessary.)

Thank you for these. Very Happy You've made VirtualBox a lot easier for many Puppians! Although Lighthouse64 has a System Tool to d/l and install VBox, it requires the large combined devX/kernel src SFS. I'm assuming your Pets do not--a big help for those without a reliable broadband connection, or who prefer not to install an SFS.

Regards,
TaZoC
