Now i was able to wget -c http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=251542 an Win8 .iso that failed for the last 800-900MB first . Clicking on the iso works, it mounts and rox can navigate the udf file system inside it :

/dev/loop0 on /mnt/Windows8-ReleasePreview-64bit-German.iso.17246 type udf (ro,relatime,utf8)




Now i have a question : Would it need only to

I trust it can only be used for a short time then it locks itself?

i myself stuck on Vista and will not try later Windows versions

the easiest method to check this iso is to burn it on rewritable DVD

can one dd it to a usb 4gb? Can one boot it
by extracting files and frugal install and boot?

My first impression with unetbootin is not as good as i liked .
The homepage had a link for sourceforge to the actual version 575 binary which seems not to run right .

Older binary versions run better. These binaries are statically compiled .

All versions complained that i had not the full 7z package installed and all versions since the beginning are written to need Qt4 .

The Gui offered to USB and HDD but to HDD gave only choice to '/' while to USB i could select /dev/sda7 which is a ~20GB ntfs partition created with gparted .

So i got me these additional files on /mnt/sda7 :

/mnt/sda7/syslinux.cfg /mnt/sda7/ubnfilel.txt /mnt/sda7/ubnpathl.txt /mnt/sda7/vesamenu.c32

where ubnfilel.txt and ubnpathl.txt are empty files .

Unetbootin had overwritten the MBR and i did not make a backup of it before . At next boot i discovered this message :

BOOTMGR is missing
Press Cntrl+Alt+Del to restart

Just short Geoffrey : am on MacPup511 atm to repair the MBR/reinstall grub

and tested your compile of winusb :

it starts but offers really only to USB and only to the main drive sdc or sdd,
not to a separate partition sdc1 or sdd2 .

It is possible to show all devices,

but the internals are correctly identified as internals
and show only if all drives checked .
loop0 btw shows also up .

winusb seems to be in an early stage .

I trust people at "bootland" and other such groups of enthusiasts
are motivated to boot Win8 from USB they want to boot everything.

For years they have booted Ms versions of windows. PE and such.
So should we not look there? I am too caught up with tidyuphome
to have time to be of much help though.

Karl I would be very interested in your impressions of Losedows 8 [sorry so childish]

I tried Windows 7 on my sisters Netbook. Thought it was excellent - but for how long? My sister had a a security policy so intense, it makes the NSA look like the boy scouts. Windows lasted about 6 months before it was breached, broken and trashed to be the crippleware no one can bear using but so much of the world does . . .

I do not hear good things about Windows 8 and will not install even a beta this time to have a look.
Never seen or been inclined to use mobile Windows.
I can not really blame Microsoft. Company gets big and becomes suitable only for pretending to provide a user based product.

I have been penguinated. Tux is the daddy.

I tried this myself, it calls gksudo which is non existent, tried symlinking sudo but that was a dismal failure, might give it a miss
