[SOLVED] Want to install Windows 8 Release Preview ISO Subject description: using Puppy |
|
Now i was able to wget -c http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=251542 an Win8 .iso that failed for the last 800-900MB first . Clicking on the iso works, it mounts and rox can navigate the udf file system inside it :
/dev/loop0 on /mnt/Windows8-ReleasePreview-64bit-German.iso.17246 type udf (ro,relatime,utf8)
Now i have a question : Would it need only to
| Code: | | cp -a /mnt/Windows8-ReleasePreview-64bit-German.iso.17246/* /mnt/sda7/ |
and a
| Code: | root (hd0,6)
chainloader +1 |
grub entry , or do i need to do it from inside Windows (Vista on sda1) ?

I downloaded the English version here.
http://search.microsoft.com/en-US/results.aspx?q=windows+8+English&x=0&y=0
So would be cool to know how one boot it?
I trust it can only be used for a short time then it locks itself?
It is big 2.56GB something

i myself stuck on Vista and will not try later Windows versions
the easiest method to check this iso is to burn it on rewritable DVD

Nice find , puppy_apprentice !
From there i went to
http://en.congelli.eu/prog_info_winusb.html
dl the source but needs
http://packages.debian.org/source/squeeze/wxwidgets2.8
which is about
| Quote: | | wxWidgets (formerly known as wxWindows) is a class library for C++ providing GUI components and other facilities on several popular platforms (and some unpopular ones as well). |
and about 38MB of size .
I would need to compile it, because am on Puppy 4 series atm .
*
Another suggestion of the site is older unetbootin .
Are there tutorials for unetbootin ?

My first impression with unetbootin is not as good as i liked .
The homepage had a link for sourceforge to the actual version 575 binary which seems not to run right .
Older binary versions run better. These binaries are statically compiled .
All versions complained that i had not the full 7z package installed and all versions since the beginning are written to need Qt4 .
The Gui offered to USB and HDD but to HDD gave only choice to '/' while to USB i could select /dev/sda7 which is a ~20GB ntfs partition created with gparted .
So i got me these additional files on /mnt/sda7 :
/mnt/sda7/syslinux.cfg /mnt/sda7/ubnfilel.txt /mnt/sda7/ubnpathl.txt /mnt/sda7/vesamenu.c32
where ubnfilel.txt and ubnpathl.txt are empty files .
Unetbootin had overwritten the MBR and i did not make a backup of it before . At next boot i discovered this message :
BOOTMGR is missing
Press Cntrl+Alt+Del to restart

I compiled winusb in Saluki, though I haven't tried it out yet http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=633788#633788

Just short Geoffrey : am on MacPup511 atm to repair the MBR/reinstall grub
and tested your compile of winusb :
it starts but offers really only to USB and only to the main drive sdc or sdd,
not to a separate partition sdc1 or sdd2 .
It is possible to show all devices,
but the internals are correctly identified as internals
and show only if all drives checked .
loop0 btw shows also up .
winusb seems to be in an early stage .
Nevertheless, thanks for your efforts !

I trust people at "bootland" and other such groups of enthusiasts
are motivated to boot Win8 from USB they want to boot everything.
For years they have booted Ms versions of windows. PE and such.
So should we not look there? I am too caught up with tidyuphome
to have time to be of much help though.

Karl I would be very interested in your impressions of Losedows 8 [sorry so childish]
I tried Windows 7 on my sisters Netbook. Thought it was excellent - but for how long? My sister had a a security policy so intense, it makes the NSA look like the boy scouts. Windows lasted about 6 months before it was breached, broken and trashed to be the crippleware no one can bear using but so much of the world does . . .
I do not hear good things about Windows 8 and will not install even a beta this time to have a look.
Never seen or been inclined to use mobile Windows.
I can not really blame Microsoft. Company gets big and becomes suitable only for pretending to provide a user based product.
I have been penguinated. Tux is the daddy.
Gosh did I rant
Please let us know you impressions

I tried this myself, it calls gksudo which is non existent, tried symlinking sudo but that was a dismal failure, might give it a miss | Code: | installation failed !
Exit code: 256

http://www.nongnu.org/gksu/
| Quote: | | GKSu is a library that provides a Gtk+ frontend to su and sudo. It supports login shells and preserving environment when acting as a su frontend. It is useful to menu items or other graphical programs that need to ask a user's password to run another program as another user. |
2 possibilities, Geoffrey :
1) hack the sudo part to open urxvt -hold -e sudo and provide a patch
2) compile this annoying dependency
pwd
/root/Downloads/GKSUDO/libgksu-2.0.12
[/me swearing big big damnation]
No package 'gconf-2.0' found
No package 'gnome-keyring-1' found
No package 'libgtop-2.0' found
satans os ..
btw i have to find out to implement sudo into Puppy 4 to be able to use newer woof scripts ..
nevertheless puppy's grub has gained the MBR again

What the heck?
It's free until about the end of the year, and fun to play with.
I put 32 bit iso version on a dvd-rw.
Booted into a Latitude d810.
Installed to a spare 30gb drive; (formatted 20gb).
Took about half an hour.
Set up the broadcom wireless during install (no problem).
Then booted a Wary cd and did full install to remaining
hd space.
As always with any Win version, I used Legacy Grub on
mbr to boot the dual setup. No problems!

Beside fun and free until the end of the year, You can full-install win8 on usb and portable also (it calls win_to_go) which you wont find portable full-install OS in linux so far. It is installable on any ntfs partition of HDD or USB (not must be on first partition) or another alternative you can create a light weight vhd-image (boot in bare-metal), let say 2 Gb image as you wish and boot it anywhere you want.
The bad things about win8:
-drivers
-some current programs will not work
-metro-look is not desktop user friendly
Boot anywhere https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4rIyOPMV8eo
