Hello. I'm having problems booting Slacko 5.3.3 when the save file is saved to my hard drive. I run WinXp (SP3) so my hard drive is NTFS, freshly defragged and with 12GB free space. Slacko creates the save file and shuts down cleanly but subsequently fails to boot correctly. Although the desktop loads none of my settings are applied and all the desktop icons are red hazard warning triangles with questions marks inside. Some apps will load, others won't. Files that exist (i.e. desktop background images) are reported as non-existent. I've tried this multiple times using various combinations of ext2/ext3 and different file sizes for the save file, but to no avail. However, when I saved the save file to USB (FAT32) everything worked as it ought on the first attempt, so I can only assume that this is an issue with NTFS?

Can anyone offer any help as I really don't want to run from USB.

Thank you.

The used /bin/ntfs-3g driver version since around Lupu-5.2.0 OR glibc-version (together) seems to have become tricky .

Mounts often succeed, but sometimes only read-only .

Things dont get copied then or neccessary updates that need to write files, dont work correctly .

The icons things might be fixed with some

Code:
gtk-update-icon-cache

or

Code:
gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders

which should get run by /etc/rc.d/rc.update at first mount of save-file .

Another problem might be, that the save-file got full (too small) and directories did not get copied to the save-file . Video files of 1minute can take up to 300MB .

So one of the above programs probably did not find /etc or /usr directory inside the save-file .

I have the same problem--with a Dell Dimension 2400 / WinXP SP3 box--but with Wary 5.1.1 alternate-iso / k2.6.30.5.

It will not see the save file on the NTFS-formatted hard drive.
But it will see the save file on an NTFS-formatted USB flash drive.

So in this case, the problem apparently isn't the filesystem, but the location of the save file.

The problem with the OP seems a bit more than the save file. If apps are not loading they come from the sfs, unless talking about apps added after Slacko was installed.

It is well known that if ntfs 3g finds a dodgy ntfs partition it will only mount read only. Solution - check the partition with Windows tools and clear the dodgy bits.

Dewbie's problem looks a bit strange. It is usually the other way round. Are all you guys running from the live CD? If you are running from a frugal install the location of your files and content of the boot configuration file are useful to help diagnose problems of this sort, which may be caused by incorrect use of the pmedia, pdev1 and psubdir boot codes.

I've had no problems with the latest Lupu, Lighthouse or Wary. I think an earlier version of Slacko was OK. Haven't tried the latest yet.

Guys, if it's any help, some ntfs problems are documented here

Following those instructions may help. There is an explanation of why these issues may occur. Running a CHKDSK from Windows can help.

Cheers

With the above-mentioned box, booting from CD to save file.

I seem to be having exactly the same problem. My first thought was the iso's integrity as the Pburn 3.3.4 failed to check its integrity twice after I burned the CD.
I have an ACER TravelMate 5511AWLMi, AMD Turion 64 2 Ghz, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100, 80GB HDD NTFS (ext3 the puppy file) and 1GB of RAM.
I never had any problem with any puppy release or derivative (other than the OperGL driver for my ATI, that is...) till now.

Indeed.
Now, all of a sudden it will see the save file on the NTFS-formatted hard drive.
(I might have had that save file in some directory that Puppy couldn't see...can't remember exactly. Rolling Eyes )
