A few issues using Puppy and Ubuntu |
|
Yup, noob.
In any case, I have a Dell d610 which refused to run any flavor of Ubuntu I tried. It also chewed up a few others, but has managed to run Mint 12, Slitaz and now Puppy!
In any case, I LIKE Puppy, I really do. It's smoking fast on this freebie machine. I just have a few problems.
First, something, maybe GRUB has an error or 17, meaning when I boot, I get only Puppy as a selection but Slitaz shows up then it boots to Puppy, on shutdown it's the same. Almost as if Puppy is inside the other...
Second, my up arrow key creates a screen shot. I have tried the keyboard manager, but nothing seems to kick it out of that bad habit.
Third, flash is borked and when I try to install Firefox, I have an error message saying I do not have room.
So... I mean not to be annoying, but having banged on this for a few hours I'm coming to the community.
Rocking OS, just needs to stop peein' on my couch...
Thanks!

What version of Puppy?
How did you install it?

If you are trying to duel boot Puppy and Slitaz.
What boot loader are you using?
This info may help explain some basic stuff.

Slacko Puppy version 5.3.3 installed from the live cd. I am not trying to dual boot, as I asked Puppy to format and install over the entire hard drive. Thus my confusion. I have pondered boot and nuke and reinstall just to clear out the ghost of that other OS.
Thank you for the search link, I will hit it first thing tomorrow.

What program runs to make screen shot?

If you did a frugal install of Puppy. This usually means you did not make the save file big enough.

Did you run a boot loader config program after installing Puppy?
menu->System->
Sounds like the boot loader from Slitaz has not totally been replaced.

This is always a good idea. Never go wrong starting from a clean system.

G'day Bannin,
I've just been playing with an old, broken-corner Medion laptop and I used Slacko-5.3.3 to set up the hard-drive.
Slacko did not progress from installing itself to actually re-install (or first-time install) Grub. Just displayed a message saying I may need to do this Grub install.
I wanted to change the partition sizes and numbers, including deleting the old partition from which Grub booted.
So I had to run the Grub Legacy installer (a <System> menu option) and I chose to add it to the MBR when the Grub installer asked where it was to put Grub (it says this can be 'dangerous' but it has always been OK for me).
This non-new-Grub on your Dell 'freebie' could be why you still have a residual Grub (Slitaz?) on its drive.
You could also run GParted (from the live Puppy CD) to see how your hard-drive is formatted/partitioned - you could add a small linux swap partition (500MB?) if you don't have more than 256MB RAM.
Happy tinkering.
David S.

Thanks for the aid, I apologize for my long delay replying. I basically nuked the hard drive, and installed Puppy again. The up arrow key is no longer confused, and I have not seen Slitaz rear it's hydra-like head.
I will now attempt to install flash and all that usual junk...
