Hi I have created a new slacko puppy (latest version) live CD and it works fine going online with ethernet on my old ethernet-enabled computer (PC).

On my other (non-ethernet) computer (PC) it picks up various wifi options (through the USB TP Link) but those belong to people in other flats around me (and obviously I don't have their passwords, neither would I want to...).
For some reason it doesn't pick up the wifi signal that is broadcast by my own router.

When I run this computer in Win7 it picks up my router correctly - although I do occasionally have to tweak the channel settings (say once every 6 months or so). Currently running on channel 13 if it's relevant.

Is there a way to guide my slacko puppy to the wifi that I wish to use, when it is not listed amongst those that it has found?

(If I try to go into the router setup in puppy (putting the router's ISP address in seamonkey's address bar) am I likely to upset my link for when I use Win7 later?)

My first thought is check your wifi router is on.

My second thought, if one of your neighbours is also broadcasting on channel 13 (aka 2472MHz) it could make your router invisible, if their wifi signal is stronger than yours.

You could try selecting another channel on your router's webpage, or maybe try auto channel ( it broadcasts on an empty channel ).

Even if you change the channel Win-7 should still be able to automatically connect as the SSID hasn't changed, (don't change anything else like the wifi encryption key) .

Many thanks Barkin
The "auto" setting did the trick - it found my router connection straight away (although it took me some time to work out where to enter the passphrase - doh!).

Can I assume that, if I need to change the channel setting again at some time in the future on Win7 from auto to a specific channel, it won't affect Puppy, which appears now to expect my wifi on channel 6?

Kind regards
David

I use the Frisbee wifi manager on Lucid Puppy 525. Once a profile for the chosen wifi network has been saved in Frisbee it can automatically reconnect even if the router broadcasts on a different channel, the (your) router is identified by it's SSID, not by the frequency (channel) it is broadcasting on. If you change the router's WiFi encryption key whilst using one OS (Linux or Windows) then subsequently all other OSes (on the same or different computers) will be unable to connect until you input the new wi-fi encryption key.

(I did use Frisbee at one point but when I went back into Puppy after switching to auto, the "simple method" worked ok Smile) I'll keep Frisbee in mind for later Smile
Kind regards
