Maybe to install a lightweight Window Manager, such as: -=mwm=-, etc..

Maybe to try -=xterm=-

Code:
xinit xterm -- :0

Code:

In -=Quirky Linux - 1.40=- OS:

xwin xterm -- :0

I use Wary 5.3 on my Inspiron 700m. Works good.

I chose i810 driver in Xorg setup for best video playback
with the 855gm graphics.

I had a laptop with similar CPU running Lupu 5.1.1+ series kernel 2.6.33.2 quite well .

Problem was the Socket-479 instead of the common 478 i guess .. Some Linux Distros with older kernels <2.6.29 with not shutting down the graphics seems to have crippled it first, than it died totally .

Somehow i am quite sure that actual Racy-5.3 should run it quite nice . The scripts have improved a lot, too .

If you tried Ubuntu...

On this

Processor Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.20GHz
Memory 635MB (260MB used)

I would try >> Lupu 528.005
because I think it will run fine.

Or the Libre Office version

LupuLibre 528.005-2 with LibO 3.5.2

http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=70855

Download.

Lupu 528.005

http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lupu-528.005.iso

Libre Office

http://diddywahdiddy.net/Puppy500/lupulibre-528.005-2.iso

And in fact extract the >>>> .sfs file to the hard drive drive
after the first boot...

Don't save first time...
reboot...tremendous speed difference on the second boot

what I call a >>> Cheat Frugal ...like adding extra ram

because when the cd loads...
Puppy will use that file on the hard drive
instead of the cd file....unique to Puppy...

boosting performance
and enabling you to play safely in Puppy without installing.
Save after this boot...256 is fine...4 just testing.

All Puppies from about version 2.02 could do this.

Your >>> .sfs file should appear as lowercase like this
for Puppy to work.

Libre = lupu_528.sfs

So will the standard Lucid 528 version 5 ...= lupu_528.sfs

Cheers Chris.

Save on the second boot

I consider APM computers as "old", while ACPI capable compouters i don't consider "old" . I have had Puppies of all kinds with Kernel 2.6.30.5+ running on a ATHLON K7 1 GHz 320 GB Ram partly ACPI capable from BIOS year 2001 with CRT monitor .

Also my Eee-1005 has booted witMacpup-F3 based upon Puppy-430+ with xorg-1.3.0 .

But wary kernel 2.6.32 should do it too, but i don't know if which wary has xorg-1.11 .

Lupu has Xorg-1.7.6 from Ubuntu, which is also ok for me on LCD .

Kernel 2.6.30.5 is an oldie-but-goodie. Smile
(from Puppy Linux 4.3.1)
I'm running it right now--a Wary 5.1.1 alternate .iso.

This one's also a Dell Dimension 2400.
(From what I understand, Pentiums are Celerons with more options.)
It's the same box that I referenced here.

Actually; Celerons are Pentiums with fewer options.
No stepping usually.

His 2.20Ghz cpu is certainly slow.
It shows 56 sec. for Blowfish.
I have a 1.5Ghz Pent4 that does it in 46 sec.
My Pent. M 1.6Ghz laptop blows them both away with 24 sec.

Hi mantisdolphin

My 10yr old Acer 243LC has a very similar spec and is also APM old.

I've found by trial and error that the following Puppy's run well on it.

Here is my menu.lst showing what's on my HDD.

# menu.lst produced by grub4dosconfig-v1.7.2
color white/blue black/cyan white/black cyan/black
timeout 10
default 0

kernel /wNOP/vmlinuz psubdir=wNOP pmedia=atahd pfix=fsck

Any of the above IMHO are excellent choices with 256mb ram,
2 exceptions that really need another 128mb ram (380 total ram minimum)
are SimpleD and Attack-Pup. They work in 256mb ram but more is better.

All of the other advice from previous poster's comes from people that are very much more
knowledgable than me and is very good. Try them all.

HTH - have fun - very best regards - Ray.
