Does Puppy modify the kernel in any way? |
|
Hey folks, just a simple question.
Does Puppy Linux modify the kernel in any way, or is it the same kernel I might grab from Debian/Gentoo/etc, with Puppy being the OS that runs on top of it?
Thanks!

Simple answer:
I don´t know which kernel Debian/Gentoo/etc is using....
The kernel that Precise Puppy 5.2.60 uses is:
| Code: | # file vmlinuz
vmlinuz: Linux kernel x86 boot executable bzImage, version 3.2.18 (root@puppypc22044) #1 S, RO-rootFS, swap_dev 0x2, Normal VGA

You cant just grab the kernel from other distro. It need aufs --- or uniofs support ie patching to have it in kernel...and there are other Puppy spesific patches also. If you check Barry Kauler`s kernel url, you see what I mean. Barry has its own kernel creation kit....I use Iguleder`s created one...slightly modified for my needs.
Then the kernel with modules folders needs to be petted right way so that kernel pet can be created. That kernel pet will be used best by woofing the kernel with new Puppy that you create with woof2. That is the way I do it.
I would say it is quite long way to learn it like I do...Compiling the kernel....creating kernel pet and other packages....like kernel sources sfs and then using woof2 to create new Puppy. But is serves well when you continue to update your builds.
Just swapping Puppy compatible kernel by using that created kernel pet is also possible. There is couple of threads how to do it right....even to create new iso as well. Here is couple of threads to read more:
