SeaMonkey 2.9.1 in Puppy 5.3.3 crashes with CPU maxed out |
|
So SeaMonkey 2.9.1 running on Puppy 5.3.3 seems to keep crashing. The CPU idiot light which is standard install, goes off the chart at the same time, but other than that, I see nothing to indicate why it's crashing.
The crashes seem to be site independent.
Ideas?
Thanks. I so do love the Puppy on this old Pile of Shtuff, I just have some kinks.

insufficent ram. try a swap partition if you cant get any more ram into it.
you might also want to fsck all your partitions and save files too.
upgrade to the latest flashplayer.

Hmm. Swap partition. Right. Thread please?
I could upgrade the RAM from 512 to 2gigs I suppose, but what would be the fun in that?

(CPU, etc.)

512 MB of RAM is more than enough to run Puppy if all you're doing is browsing the Internet. For years I ran Puppy from a multisession DVD in a computer with 512 MB of RAM and no hard disk drive (so no swap memory).
There is one caveat: if you watch lots of videos or download large files, SeaMonkey's cache may fill up. Perhaps that's maxing out your RAM and causing your problem.
My solution is to tell SeaMonkey to put its cache in /tmp (in SeaMonkey, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Cache, click Choose Folder and navigate to /tmp.) That way, at least Puppy isn't saving the stuff in SeaMonkey's cache when it shuts down.

I always set the browser cache and history to zero. I haven't noticed any issues.
Cheers

It's a Dell Latitude D610 laptop. I would assume 512 is enough to run anything I do now, I mean it was plenty not too long ago and all, and this OS is a small one.
Processor Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.60GHz
Memory 514MB (136MB used)
The sites I'm looking at are grooveshark for music streaming and things like Etsy, which is minimal image usage. I also have nothing running in the background (that I know of).
I will tinker with your suggestions soon though. I like Puppy and would like to keep it. My only plan for this machine is to stream music, and I'd think the specs are way plenty.
Thanks!
