From XP can I run Puppy from USB stick w/o USB_Boot option? Subject description: no FDD, no DVD, no USB_Boot, no change to XP files |
|
If I put Puppy Linux on a USB stick (using this or some other method: http://voices.yahoo.com/how-install-puppy-linux-onto-usb-flash-drive-2250648.html), is there some way I can run PL on a PC that has XP installed, but without needing to make changes to XP's files?
The PC has no FDD, no working DVD, and has no "boot from USB" option in its boot sequence.
I have in mind booting to Windows, then going to the command line and typing something that causes magic to happen and Puppy Linux to run.
I'm away from home and fretting without my Puppy.

You can try this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16822/boot-from-a-usb-drive-even-if-your-bios-wont-let-you/)
http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/plpbt.bin.html)
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=78880)
If you have a working CD drive, you can burn this iso. When you start up the computer, you'll come to a menu that will allow booting from a USB stick.

For a start...
Copy the XP root files with Puppy.
I call the folder >>> System XP
This gives you a backup to copy back to if you stuff up.
""""""""""""
I always Copy >>> NOT MOVE....these XP >>> root files.
AUTOEXEC.BAT
boot.ini
CONFIG.SYS
IO.SYS
MSDOS.SYS
NTDETECT.COM
ntldr
::::
Edit the >>> boot.ini
Save it
Nooby has these.
I saw something this morning here....
I will try and find it and edit this later.
I think it was a >> bigpup post.
Open up the Puppy ISO in Windows >> with 7ZIP.....
http://www.7-zip.org/
To a folder on your hard drive.
7 Zip properly >> extracts the files properly in lower case.

If you don't have any other working boot device, I think that the answer is "no".

Shep,
Have a look at this article: http://agnipulse.com/2009/11/linux-live-usb-creator/ It just might be the solution you are looking for. Apparently, it's known to work with Puppy LInux.

Here is a way perhaps.
How to multi-boot puppy from xp (frugal install into XP)
http://murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=75257
As noted....defrag Windows first.
I only use a 256 Save file if I'm not installing much...
A browser and Flash etc.
Others have different opinions.
If the save file is working properly....
back it up to another folder.
Use >> Copy.....never >>> move
""""""""""""
I read you....no Floppy option...
This is for those that do.
no "boot from USB" option
PLOP where usb can't work.

Looks interesting. I read through it and the instructions seemed do-able until I got to this: | Quote: | To launch your LinuxLive in Windows, just run Virtualize_This_Key.exe * located in the VirtualBox folder on your USB key.
* Be aware that you need local administrator's privileges in order to launch VirtualBox. | I'm not the administrator, and the password for administrator is not known. Guess I'm SOOL here.

If you don't have any other working boot device, I think that the answer is "no". | So when someone takes their "Linux on a USB drive" to an internet cafe, they don't merely reboot the machine, but must delve into the BIOS and fiddle with the boot sequence?

Have you considered the possibility of just installing puppy as a windoze program...it can be installed/uninstalled as an .exe file by windoze add/remove programs, leaving the setup as was....
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=61404
You can keep a backup save file on a usb stick, but my setup just puts the savefile in the created puppy folder
It does modify the windoze boot.ini but is totally and safely reversible, as a backup is automatically created...there is no fumbly user intervention needed to mess it up
I have a Slacko 530 PAE-SCSI running happily for 10 months on an old server box....trouble free, apart from a Browser/Flash update needed
It's also possible to have multiple puppy versions, as it will just add to the menu.lst. It checks C:\ and C:\boot\grub for a menu.lst, and adds itself to it.

If the machine does not have the capability to boot from USB you cannot have Puppy Linux on the USB and expect it to boot!
All OS have to boot somehow. If your machine has no boot devices then there is no way you can boot anything other than Windows from the hard drive without changing SOMETHING of Windows XP. The key is to make the changes minimal and not upset Windows!
2 ways to go
(1) Install grub boot loader (which overwrites MBR of the Windows machine) and then boot your installed Puppy or Windows from grub.
(2) Make minor changes to the Windows XP boot mechanism (basically the menu file boot.ini) so that you add the option to boot a frugal install of Puppy.
I prefer the latter and Lin'N'Win previously mentioned, (which I wrote), was specifically written to cope with your situation.
If the Puppy you want to use has a Windows Installer (so you don't have to follow the procedure referenced by Aitch) then this is the same as Lin'N'Win but done automatically for you.

That's easy to say. But consider the number of forum posts that start like this:
" I really wanted to demo Puppy Linux on my friend's computer. But now his Windows won't start any more. What should I do?"
