Cannot enable cookies in dillo-3.0.2-1

#1 Post by don922 »

I am running Lucid Puppy 5.2.8 and have installed dillo-3.0.2-1. Everything seemed to be working okay until I tried to install Gmail.

Gmail keeps telling me I haven't allowed Cookies, but I think I did, ie., here is a copy of the /root/.dillo/cookiesrc:

Code: Select all

#host action
DEFAULT DENY
fltk.org ACCEPT
.host.com ACCEPT_SESSION
The following is a comment from http://www.dillo.org/Cookies.txt titled Cookies In Dillo:
If you want to accept certain cookies, you can specify rules for different
domains in the file ~/.dillo/cookiesrc. The syntax looks like:
#host action
DEFAULT DENY
fltk.org ACCEPT
.host.com ACCEPT_SESSION

Line 0: Comment line begins with '#'.
Line 1: Deny all cookies from all domains not otherwise specified.
Line 2: Accept all cookies from fltk.org, and save them to
~/.dillo/cookies.txt when the cookies dpi exits.
Line 3: Accept all cookies from all subdomains of host.com, but
do not save them when the dpi exits.
Is there any other way to get dillo to accept cookies?

I don't use gmail so I am just guessing here.
Have you tried adding this line to cookiesrc?:

mail.google.com. ACCEPT

If that doesn't work consider adding this line as well:

google.com ACCEPT

Also if gmail requires javascript to work properly
dillo can't be used because it can't handle javascript.

See:

https://www.fsf.org/blogs/community/gmail-jstrap/

From that webpage dated Mar 30, 2011 it states gmail
uses javascript but that google was "developing a 'basic
HTML' version of the Gmail website, which does
not rely on heavy JavaScript to build the user interface."

Maybe Links 2.7pre1 will work because it supports javascript.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=72044

Another line in that article states "They also provide IMAP
and POP interfaces for users to access their Gmail accounts
without using the website at all."

So you might try using one of these two programs:

Claws Mail 3.8.0
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76785

or

Sylpheed 3.1.3
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=76786

Good luck.

I have Links 2.7 pre1 on Lucid 528.005, and it does not have Javascript enabled. I went to the Links website and it said something about compiling, but that is something I have never done.

How would I go about enabling Javascript in my Links?

"How would I go about enabling Javascript in my Links? "

I rarely use Links and I'm using Links 2.3 and
it seemed that Javascript kind of worked. So I thought It would be present
in the updated version 2.7 pre1 which corrected a previous
security problem. When I investigated I found this info:

" Javascript was removed. The reason is that it is very buggy, Martin
Pergel doesn't have time to develop it and code is so messy that no one
else can understand it.

If you use links for special purposes (embedded devices, etc.), you can
bring javascript back by copying javascript files from previous release,
removing "dnl javascript" lines from configure.in, adding *.c and *.h
files to Makefile.am and re-running automake and autoconf.

Javascript hooks from main code were not removed --- they just won't be
maintained."

I'm wrong javascript won't work. Sorry about making that mistake and getting your hopes up.

I was thinking that you may want to take a step up further in your browsing experience and try Midori perhaps? Lucid-5.2.8 already comes with a very lite-weight, basic and bare-bone version of Midori pre-installed ( I believe version 2.2? ), but you can find another version in the Puppy Package Manager that's version 2.2.4 I think and that should not only be very lite-weight, but likewise handle your Gmail account without any problems. I've used it for my ISP's web-based accounts - also javascript-based - and it's worked like a charm.

There is also a much higher version of Midori, I believe version 4.3.x compiled by dev jemimah of Saluki and Fluppy fame... however, I don't seem to remember whether or not I ever succeeded in getting that to run on Lucid-Pup? That's the one main problem with Midori: If it works - it'll work a real treat and give you hour's worth of enjoyment. If it doesn't work nothing you do will ever seem to get it running.

My experience yet your mileage may vary. Still worth a shot though as I enjoy Midori immensely and wished there was a "universal version" for all Puppies just as there seems to be for all SeaMonkies/Firefoxes/Operas, etc.

I hope this helps in some small way?
