I download a lot of video files. PL seems to play .avi, mgp files OK, but not .mkv. Anyone know what will play these? Thanks.

Most of the players should be able to play them, such as gxine, VLC and mplayer. On my setup, though, I've had problems playing most MKVs (they play with no problems in Windows, on the same system).

But, yes, VLC and mplayer do support MKV (I have no problems playing them using those players on my Windows or Mac systems, for the most part.)

gnome-mplayer plays them just fine, except not just "clicking" the file, you need to open gnome-mplayer and navigate to the file

NOTE: there is a difficulty with the mime-type of matrotska files. They seem to identify themselves as "application/octet-stream; charset=binary" which means that assigning an application is almost impossible. Many binary files are identified as "application/octet-stream" and to assign gnome-mplayer or any other player to open those would be irresponsible.

CORRECTION: As pointed out by jamesbond, the mime is correctly recognised as video/x-matroska by Rox when you right click the file >> Properties

Here's the link:

http://www.filecrop.com/mkv-sample.html

I downloaded 2 small files:

1. Sample 23

2. Koyaanisquatsi
