Yesterday I did an update of the ppm
(it took nearly two hours)
Was looking for an alternative to Chrome
in Debian Squeeze main

Not so sure there is one I prefer . . .

I did not install Iceweasel (yes I have read the Debian manifesto) or surf.
Java and python dependent browsers - not for me.
Not too inclined to find opera-mini.
Barryk is getting more tabs open in Chrome/Chromium (not sure which is the OS and which the browser and Google in an effort of 'no-evil' disinformation is blurring the line)
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02883
I also tried using the sync setting facility, so you can have bookmarks and setup the same across devices using Chrome
Not too successful and Seamonkey has something similar though less advanced.
My inclination would be to use Chrome as a modern, mega browser. Familiar to many.

Guys if you have a chihuahua, will you be putting a solar powered webcam + raspberry pi on it? Just an idea. A camera is one of the first planned daughter-boards :)

@ Lobster
I tried aplay -Dplughw:X filename.wav, and yes, it works a little bit. This means, I get sound, but also some underrun errors (some drop outs) and after ~30sec it freezes.

Installed Aqualung, but it doesn't find any sound device. Well, not so important by now.

Also tried to update PPM, but after downloading the files, every line looks like
program name /usr/local/petget/find_cat: line1: syntax error: unexpected "(".
eowens2 wrote:The Puppy Package Manager still seems to be struggling to do its thing...it seems to want to install the program again after it reports having successfully installed it.
Also here. Choosing "Cancel" stops installing the 2nd time. First times I thougt that it was me, being less patient. Or my keyboard. Often it forgets a letter or a key "hangs" (like pressed permanently). I don't think, that it's a mechanical problem, too many different keys are involved. If I'm alone with this problem, it's nonetheless probablly my keyboard.

On the positive side, it seems to be easy to boot sap6 from usb hd. Also to use a swap partition there (you still need partition 1 of the sd card).
I think, antiloquax posted about that before, but can't find it  .

i just copied the content of mm0p2 to a free partition of a usb hd and changed in cmdline.txt root=/dev/mmcblk0p2 to root=/dev/sda1(the partition where my Puppy files are), and rootfstype=ext4 to rootfstype=ext3. At first run it took ~6 sec. longer (41sec. instead of 35sec.) Now I deleted the content of mm0p2 and also the swap partition on the sd card (I have one on the usb hd). Works fine.

Edit: Nice video today, Lobster :D

Thanks Rolf :)

Looking forward to alpha3. Looks like Barry has many tricks from no swap drive, fast file system etc - oh yeah.

USB keydrive was temperamental - several versions of the desktop icon and I could not transfer files from SAP to the drive - though I managed it the other way - onto the Raspberry Pi.

Another issue. On my early Debian (pre SAP) the image took up the whole screen - now it is partial both on the later Debian and consequently Puppi.

Image
I did try using ffmpeg to record the video but without full screen success
xcowsay is a lot of fun - check it out
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 491#429491

The video was run from a rather flawed bash script
recorded on Ipad and uploaded and edited on youtube

I will upload the script after I get it working a bit better.

I have Pi (the real type)

I can't get sound to work over hdmi but I can over analog. (May be the really cheap telly and hdmi cable  )

Code: Select all

modprobe snd_bcm2835
amixer cset numid=3 1
The "1" on the end forces analog.

Tried a DVD, plays, unwatchable :(

Tried a CD, excellent :)

Pmusic seems to fail :(

Mplayer plays mp3 just fine :)

Gnome-mplayer is not too bad with mp4 and avi video, a bit scratchy

Compiled volumeicon but it doesn't quite work, I may email the developer. It shows in the tray ok, but preferences don't work and the volume only decreases to about 50% instead of mute when the thing says 0%. Obmixer doesn't show up at startup but does kind of work :?

More as I go, see if I can help fix anything

Ahah!

Lobster, if you mount the first partition you see the file "config.txt"

Under where it says "hdmi_force_hotplug=1" add a line thus:

Code: Select all

disable_overscan=1
Reboot.

Enjoy your newly gained screen real estate :)

Hi Mick,
glad you got it :D .

Today I couldn't do anything with my Pi. We had a lot of rain last night, canalisation was overwhelmed and now I have a wet cellar  . Not a tragedy, but very annoying  .

Cheers,
Rolf

many thanks for reminder 8)

Also thanks for new record script.

I will try that shortly on Rpi hardware

You know that File-Sharing prog that we are accustomed to in Puppy? I think HairyWill wrote it, may be wrong, sorry if so, but anyway it's fixed for armv6. I compiled the binaries it depends on.

Barry, should be fine I have successfully tested and transfered files over wireless. :)

Install all pets below (you can omit the curlftpfs_DOC and pure-ftpd_DOC pet if you wish)

Lobster, this is better technology than "sneakernet" :)

Enjoy!

EDIT: forgot about pure-ftpd, added

EDIT: fixed the file_sharing_nobins package

Oh good news - missed that. :D

gotta go Barry has released latest SAP - oh yeah . . . :D
http://bkhome.org/blog/?viewDetailed=02890

edit: Oh no :?
No Puppy
this is the woof system on Raspberry Pi.

I am not very good with woof but Mick should be able to use it :)

Regarding sound - the most I ever got out of it was a tone (from a generator) - just to test the hardware.

Hi,
got omxplayer working with sap6 :D .

A lot of missing libs, but it was easy to fix.

It's a simple console player (I guess only avi and mp4), but with GPU support and it works. At least with one (of 2) HD movies, which I've tested (Ghost Rider, don't ask, from where I got it  ). The other one works also, but with a lousy resolution). Sound only via audio jack, but sound and video are flawlessly.

Will try to build a pet soon .

Cheers,
Rolf

Lobster,

We already have alsa, and that site is where I got the instructions that I posted. Should work for analog.

-

I have been trying to get PNethood to work, no go so far. It probably would work with the debian smbclient but I saw the installed size was over 40MB :?

I succeeded in compiling samba-tng, 2 MB compressed but it doesn't see windows shares! Sees samba shares (linux based) fine. It's probably a bit old (2009). The alternative is to compile Samba and grab smbclient out of that but I think it would take a day to compile! Later.. maybe.

Might see if I can ftp to a windows box, that's good enough.

Hi,

I tried it Lobster, but with omxplayer only amixer cset numid=3 1 (for audio jack) seems to work for me  .

The pet is ready, but 4.785MB seems to be too big for here

Some weeks ago I was thinking about such a situation and found a file server for free with 5GB amount. Damn, can't remember the name  . Must meditate

Will be back soon,
Rolf

Edit: here is the link: https://www.hidrive.strato.com/lnk/pSMjQ4Kt
Install it, go to the folder with your movie, open a terminal there and type omxplayer name_of_your_file. Enjoy (hopefully :P ).

You can use (P)ause, (Q)uit and right/left arrow.

It looks like to be only a temporary solution. It's limited for 30 days and 5 downloads only. Then I must enable again

Edit2: Mick kindly mirrored it here: http://www.smokey01.com/01micko/raspi_p ... -0.0.1.pet. Thank you :D

Hi. Great to see the progress being made ...
I haven't done much with my SAP yet.

My first priority is to get Python 3 and Pygame working.
I installed Tk and TCL and then compiled Python, but it couldn't find the tkinter module. I will try again when I have some more time.

01micko, note that your file_sharing_no_bins has the x86 binaries in it still.

I also compiled Planner project manager and created PETs, see link.
