D/L iso and burned to cd-r

Tried to boot on win 7 64bit computer. Boot process starts but only get black screen - no desktop - I tried several of the Pfix parameters and still no luck

HP Pavillion dm-4-2070 laptop
Intel Core I5, 2.3 ghz 8gb memory
screen resolution 1366x768
Intel HD graphics 3000 with up to 1696 mb shared memory

any ideas as to what my problem might be?

If the boot sequence completes and then it turn black , put boot parameter : '' nomodeset pfix=vesa '' . Maybe a video driver problem ...
If it turn s black and not even a message error show up :

If you have any USB drive attached , it will do so... Pull out the USB drive!
Did you check if the image was burned with no errors ? I mean you did not burned it with windows burner ...if so , you better use Imgburn ( open source) , or do it in Linux !

Also take a look in BIOS at boot order priority...
Try it on another PC !

I compiled some programs and did a remaster, I added
qt-482,xinelib-1.22,xineui-0.97,umplayer,smplayer,smtube,MPlayer-1.1,and cmus.
Also the proprietary nvidia driver.
The iso is 328mb
It booted up on another pc which has nvidia graphics card and works
fine on that pc.
I booted it up on a pc with intel graphics and got a black screen but
I entered xorgwizard a couple of times and then xwin, it went to the
desktop and everything is working fine except glxgears doesn't work.
I used gparted to resize the hard drive and added a new partition.then
used the fatdog installer to install to the new partition, logged off
creating my new savefile.
Next boot it offers a choice of savefiles to load, the first partition
has an older fatdog install on it, I chose the new install and it
booted up to the desktop.

Apart from the glxgears problem it's working fine.

EDIT: I made another remaster with all of the above programs plus a
few others, minus the proprietary nvidia driver.
The new iso size is 268 mb.
Installed to the hard drive.

I checked - the filesize and file date of fatdog-package-manager.sh looks old and wrong. Are you sure you're using the correct initrd?
You are correct, I was picking up b2 installed on a separate partition. Do you know of any changes that could be made to the menu.lst to assure that the correct partition is loaded? The correct save file was loaded. My solution was to delete the b2 installation.

Code: Select all

title Fatdog64-600 RC(sdb5/fatdog64-600)
  find --set-root --ignore-floppies --ignore-cd /fatdog64-600/initrd
  kernel /fatdog64-600/vmlinuz savefile=direct:device:sdb5:fatdog64-600/fd64save.ext4
  initrd /fatdog64-600/initrd
Thanks,
Jim

Instead of using "find --set-root" use "root (hdx,y)"

It looks like you are using sdb5, so you probably want "hd(1,4)"

Please let me/kirk know of any major showstopper problems. We can live with minor problems
I can offer a mirror if you need. (check your PMs)

No USB drive attached - Downloaded using puppy and burned iso using pburn 3.60

Bios set to boot from cd first
.
Try it on another PC !
Don't have another 64 bit pc

I have made sure that none of the scripts in Fatdog uses $HOSTNAME. They all use $(hostname) instead. In addition, when you use the graphical login manager, restarting X automatically means logout also.

Yes, done.

I think nvidia driver requires /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so the getnvidia.pet will create it (the nvidia pet I'm currently uploading definitely use it). Thus, X no longer dynamically detects the driver and always try to load "nvidia". If you delete that /etc/X11/xorg.conf, X should revert to its default behaviour and load intel drivers. Just my guess, however :)

Lovely background you have there, is that the view from your backyard? Do you mind sharing that? :)

Did you see Fatdog boot logo at all? I presume you does?
Anyway, try this "fatdog nomodeset pfix=vesa, xorgwizard" - this means do not use any modesetting driver, use the vesa driver instead, and show xorgwizard for resolution selection at boot-up. Are you sure the md5sum matches?

I never tried deleting the xorg.conf, I will try that.

The second remaster boots up on other computers, at least it did on my laptop with ati graphics, so I have one for nvidia and one for everything else.

I found the background on the web, I'll attach it.

Noted. I won't be updating pmount now; not enough time and also I prefer not to make big untested changes near final release.
Against my better judgement  I have written a replacement for pmount. I don't know whether it will be faster or slower than pmount. In case it is not working well, a simple copy of pmount-old over pmount will revert it back to the old pmount.

Billtoo, thanks for the picture :)

Thank you everyone for your participation. RC is now closed and we're cutting the final ISO.

Fatdog 600 final is here: TBD

[Lobster faints]
The pioneering work you have done will be around for years. I still run a 32 bit Puppy even though I can run (and find it faster and more stable) yours and Kirks efforts.
Many innovations have come from Fatdog.
. . . I will just read the FAQS whilst awaiting the new canine :D

Thanks! How many days will it take for the "mirrors" to get the final iso?
So the final really is different from the RC. The PMount is different
but that is the only difference then?

Curious remarks from an absolute noob.

Now that Kirk and JamesBond has made a fully multi-user Puppy.
Why have not the other Developers showed interest in making a
32-bit Puppy that also is multi user. FatDog shows it works as good
as any Puppy.

Even I could use FatDog without any of the problems that I ahve with
Ubuntu and other mulituser distros.

So being root is not problem. Setting up restricted users can be done
for those that need such. I don't have such needs AFAIK now but
if I need it in future then the FAQ of FD will tell me how.

But FD is 64bit and not all of my computers can deal with that.
I trust only 2 out of 5 computers here at home can run on 64 bit.

so a 32 bit multi user versionof Puppy would be most welcome.
I use Google Search on Puppy Forum
not an ideal solution though

It really depends on the mirror. I think at most a day.

Only minor fixes for multisession and broadcom wireless driver, plus few minor fixes.

booted using fatdog nomodeset pfix=vesa,xorgwizard

x failed to start

deleted /etc/X11/xorg.conf

typed xwin and desktop appeared

How can I boot to desktop without having to delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

By default the system doesn't create or use /etc/X11/xorg.conf at all. It is pfix=vesa that creates the xorg.conf. If you system can start without xorg.conf, all you need is "nomodeset".

That solved my problem
Using "fatdog nomodeset" booted straight to desktop

This is my first time to try a 64 bit puppy. Boot process is a little slow, but the apps are very fast.

Many thanks for your assistance.

Just a minor tidying item for a rainy day:
If Fatdog is inadvertently run on a 32bit machine, the 'wrong machine' message doesn't show up until the initial booting sequence is complete!
Otherwise - masterful, thanks.
