PostPosted: Sun 08 Jul 2012, 12:44    Post_subject:  personal save file in USB
Sub_title: how to manage personal save file in USB only environment

Hi.

Installed my brand new Slacko on USB (boot and save file) and I encrypted save file for privacy reasons.

I cannot find these informations:

a) how to change the personal save file password
b) how to skip personal save file at boot... there is NOT the CD-boot menu that offers you to change boot options.

Thanks for any help.

Steve

Welcome aboard ladybug!
To change the password of an encrypted save file you must simply create a new encrypted save file
with a new password. AFAIK this is the only way to change it.

To boot without using the save file, hit F2 at beginning of bootup and type "puppy pfix=ram"
without the quotes.

Thank you for your reply, mill.

Unfortunately I tried F2 keys dozens of times, on two PCs...and I am not able to let it work.

Concerning the "change password" activity, I guess that the only way to create a new save file (but keeping all my settings and my applications) is:
- start in the usual way, using my personal saved file
- remaster a new puppy cd using "remaster puppy live cd"
- start from the new live cd
- create the new save...

I don't use Slacko so can not test and
I am not sure how it sets up USB but I would test to just hit

e for Edit or p for Puppy and some set ups respond to these.

Maybe it help to hit Esc in case that stop the boot enough
for to edit the boot? Then you should be able to edit the kernel line
to have the pfix=ram

Another way would to boot using a frugally installed puppy on HD and
then edit the boot of the USB? That way you do have access to how it boots
next time?

Thanks for your reply nooby.

I would like to decide "on the fly" whether to load personal file or not.

Actually I am testing use of one USB-puppy used in some PCs (work, home, other...): that would give me a "light equipment" (only a USB key!) and a unique environment following me wherever I go... The only "problem" is: IF I want not to load my personal file... what could I do?

ps tried "e", "p", and "esc" keys but did not help... e and p does nothing, esc asks me what image to load and not which startup options

solved the "boot problem" Smile

- replaced into syslinux.cfg on USB key content from puppy CD isolinux.cfg
- changed last row in syslinux.cfg:
from: append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=cd
to: append initrd=initrd.gz pmedia=usbflash
- copied all *msg files from puppy CD on USB key

now at boot I have same options than CD

another simple solution is to install Grub4Dos on the usb stick. it will give you the option to boot puppy with the save file, or without the save. it will also give you the option to boot windows if it is installed on the host machine.
