Mini vMac 3 on a Puppy machine

#1 Post by don570 »

Download the emulation solftware plus sys7 here
http://www.datafilehost.com/download-65b11f75.html

EDIT: New version has OS 7.5.5 and a much bigger
image 100mb and more useful software Stuffitdeluxe 4.5
Diskcopy and Word perfect 1.2

Import and export apps are included too!!
However read my remarks about memory hogging
in the post down the page

I've put together an archive with all the software you need for
the emulation. I've included the Mac plus ROM called
Mac_Plus_ROM.zip which I got from this site

Try here

All the software in the archive is freely available
downloads or shareware or demos.

Here are the instructions to install Min vMac on your machine
i.e. the host machine is running puppy linux

I've gotten surprising good results with Mini vMac running on
puppy linux machine . (See image)

Image

Instructions for quick install:

Make a folder(any name) on your hard drive and place the file 'Mini vMac'
and vMac.ROM in the folder.

Image

You launch the app by clicking
on executable file 'Mini vMac' (or execute at terminal ./'Mini vMac').

Next step --->
Dragging the Mac OS 7.5.5 image (about 100mb) on the flashing icon to mount the image
which has all the necessary system 7.5.5 software inside.

That's it!!! Everything should be working now. It's simple
and quick. ... and it's very stable. The only negative
is it takes up some RAM of your machine , but only
a few megs. There is NO slowdown of your computer
unlike other emulators.

Extra info:

Press the control key for help system.
CTRL-Q CTRL-Y to quit and then say yes
To start load of system software again ---->
go to Special menu and chose 'Restart' or 'Shutdown' and drag Disk.dsk
into window again

If successful, restart and then drag the disk.dsk on the flashing icon to start the system software.

To stop the emulation ---> Shutdown from Mac menu and
then close emulation window.

I've included some apps I still had available
like a share ware version of stuffit, a menu clock
and a screen shot saver. The Wordperfect is a freeware
version. There is two versions of Stuffit . One
freeware and the other shareware. But beware that
these are old versions so they will only open early versions
of the archive format. This rule applies for
all old mac software. Formats have changed over the years.
Access to a new Mac machine may be necessary to open a
file!!

To make a screenshot press ALT - shift - 5
In the emulator the ALT key mimics Apple's Command key

Tip using BBedit Lite : Don't select 'Show invisibles' option.
It causes a crash, probably because symbols font isn't
installed.

Tip using games: I included lots of games. I highly recommend
'Columns' ---> use JKL keys for movement
Lots of games and more software are available

Some advice and tips

Some advice and tips

To get a data file into the emulator you will have
to make an .dsk image file and drag it
into emulator window . Here's some good advice on images
http://minivmac.sourceforge.net/image.html

Here is how I made the Disk.dsk--->

From the blank images -Choose at least 4 meg

Note that dragging any type of file into the emulator window will
convert it into a blank image!! But this practise is dangerous
since it zeros the file to make it a blank image.
Beware !! Data will be wiped out. You get a warning when
you drag the file into the emulator window but be careful anyway.
Name can be chosen. I renamed image file 'Disk.dsk'.
It's a good practise to use the extension .dsk for your
images that will be used. These images use
the old Mac file system known as HFS. The modern
SYSTEM X mac computers use a different file system known as HFS+
which is incompatible and the images use the extension .drg

-When installing System software choose to install
Mac Plus software to save space (about 1mb)

-Drag as many floppy disk images into window as possible
(however you will be told that there is a maximum of 5)

-Make sure that a blank writable dsk image is mounted
so that it can receive the final system folder
(this step is very important)

Dragging an image will mount the image automatically
Do not mount Print image because there is limit to
the number of images that can be mounted.

Launch the installer app.
Follow the instructions on screen. If you are told to
insert a disk then drag that disk image into window.

Next -- choose to restart or shutdown

Drag Disk.dsk to the window with the blinking disk icon

This will load the system software and all other files
inside the dsk image

Extra info:

You can mount a Macintosh HFS disk image file with commands such as:

mkdir /mnt/mac_disk
mount /the_image_path/the_image.dsk /mnt/mac_disk -t hfs -o loop

There is lots of software available at
http://www.emaculation.com/doku.php/system_6_hell

Notes to explain how I made the dsk image:

I have included the Apple software System 7.0.1

System_7.0.1.smi.bin from the official Apple site but I have decompressed it to get the
individual images (there are 6 images)

..But there is a limit to the number of images that can be mounted simultaneously
so I started by mounting 5 of the images plus the Disk.iso
(leaving the print image unmounted)

You will see the installer application in one of the images .. Launch it
and follow the instructions. The system software will be installed in the
the image that you have dragged into window.

You should customize the installation to save about 1mb of space.
Click install and follow instructions.

Here is an alternate way to make an HFS file system image.
The author puts .hfs as the extension but .dsk would be preferable

"I figured out one good way to shovel one's data into minivmac. You can make a little HFS image file from a collection of separate files using the (standard unix) CD authoring tool "mkisofs":

mkisofs -hfs -hfs-unlock -probe -V "My Stuff" -o stuff.hfs Stuff/*

This creates a HFS volume in the file "stuff.hfs", which can immediately be mounted in minivmac. Because mkisofs is so cool, this even works if your Mac files have been mangled to work on another platform using AppleDouble, BinHex, PC Exchange, netatalk, or MacOS X's external format."

This worked for me when I tried it on Red Hat Linux 9. I noticed the man page warns against using -hfs-unlock (which prevents the disk image being set as locked), since "it's not a 'real' HFS volume." And indeed, Disk First Aid and Norton Utilities found problems with the created disk image.

I have also been able to get Basilisk II to work nicely with OS 8 and Puppy linux.

The advantages are many.

Color screen
CD ROM access
File sharing
More software available

I'll describe how I did it when I have more experience with the software.

Wordprocessing using mini vMac

Printing doesn't work in mini vMac but getting files in and
out of mini vMac isn't hard . This is explained on
mini vMac site

As well there is a clipboard utility included which works well.

There's a limited number of file translators available apparently
so Basilisk is preferable because maclink file translators
are available. 8)

I was able to get Fullwrite and wordperfect to work.
Fullwrite is full featured and quick and freeware.
Your Serial Number is — FREE-33333-33333

I decided to add the MAC_plus_ROM to my package of useful
software.

I highly recommend that you install stuffit 4.0 or 4.5 to the
emulator. This will make installing more hardware possible.
In my next version of package I will do this. :)

I upgraded to Mac OS 7.5.5 since it has more features
and will run more software. ( It's in the download archive )

However there is a negative side to Mac OS 7.5.5

The system software alone requires nearly 2 mb to run.
Compare this to Mac OS 7 which required about 1 mb.

Since the emulation is a 4mb Mac plus machine, 2 mb doesn't leave
much room for apps to load. For instance a big app
like Fullwrite probably won't run properly in OS 7.5.5.

In this case I have left OS 7.0 images in the archive
just in case you ever need to install Mac OS 7.0 in
an emergency.

Don't forget to play the Columns game in the games folder.

thanks don,

this looks interesting; i've been wondering for a few months about a virtual machine on puppy running a powerpc version of mac: i thought it might make the project of porting puppy to the powerpc architecture more achievable if puppy users could try out the port without needing an actual ppc compu.

do you have a sense of how useful this virtualisation might be in this way, or am i missing some obvious disqualifier?

cheers, mm

Mac Emulator - Basilisk II is the more useful way of emulating
a mac. Not only does it show color but old CDs formated for the
Mac operating system can be opened by a linux machine

This is very useful for me since I have a lot of burnt CDs from
my days as a mac user that now can be easily opened.

You need to have an old OS 8 sys disc ( up to os 9)
