Are you actually using this for the desktop icons but still using Rox as your filer? That seems like it would be pretty pointless...

I think this would be good for openbox or Pekwm. I mean outside of puppy.
Inside of puppy, it should be used with something like Awesome, though that would defeat the purpose of Awesome.

You do know that it is Rox which controls the desktop icons, not JWM, don't you? So they work exactly the same if you use openbox or Pekwm...

Just created a compatible drive icon management program for iDesk. As soon as I cleaned up everything I'll upload a dotpet here. Very Happy

EDIT:

Here we go.
The icons will be displayed on the bottom left of the screen. Left-clicking will either mount the device and start ROX, OR just starts ROX if the device is already mounted. Right-clicking them will unmount the devicec if possible. Please be aware that in order to refresh the icons, idesk needs to restart. Therefore, the desktop will flicker. Not very pretty, but I can't change that. Sad

In order to sync the creation script with the current icon creation system, add "CreateIdeskDeviceEntries" as the last command in "create_icon_func" in /sbin/pup_event_frontend_d

I actually didn't, I forgot.

Is ROX that resource heavy, though? I did read that there is a file manger based on ROX that claims to be even smaller by removing alot of unnecessary features. Unfortunately it uses KDE libs.

If Idesk is indeed a better alternative to ROX, then it might be a good idea to see if there are even lighter alternatives.

It appears to me as though that is where puppy should go. Finding innovative ways to accomplish with less memory what most computers would need a infinite store of RAM and CPU to accomplish.

No.
And if you're still using Rox as your filer I'd say it is definitely best to use it for your desktop icons as well.
1. It is simpler than adding a separate program for the desktop icons.
2. It saves having both Rox and iDesk running at the same time Wink
3. If you don't use Rox to manage either your desktop or a panel, then the Rox history menu (on the bookmarks menu) is cleared every time you close the last Rox window. This is annoying.

You must have your wires crossed there. Maybe you heard about a lighter version of Konqueror or something? Nothing based on Rox would use KDE libs, and nothing using KDE libs would count as light compared to Rox.

Idesk is not an alternative to Rox, as it only provides desktop icons, not a filer.
To replace Rox you need Idesk plus a filer. This would be worth looking into if you're using say fifteen year old hardware, or if you want a filer with a tree view. But personally if I used extremely old hardware I think my preferred option would be to use the old GTK1.2 version of Rox, rather than some other alternative.

its idesk.

for icons using coordinat so wont go anywhere, and for drive icon just let it go and placed there. so will be automatic if a drive pluggin in. and will be flicker
