AtherosAR5413 802.11abg NIC uses kernel module driver ath5k. It does not need firmware so it is ath5k module only which concerns.
I had my previous laptop with ath5k using wireless chip. It was troublesome. Some Puppies kept wireless connection some didnt. I am sorry. There isnt much I can do...but you can try following....

Dhcpcd might also be culprit with that module. You could use Frisbee enable-disable manager and disable Frisbee and then reboot and with next reboot use SNS which uses other dhcpcd daemon. I have dual system in my build.

Of course you could post pmodemdiag command created tar ball here....and also the output of this command:
lspci -nn > lscpi.gz
Just to check if there would be something to catch on....probably not.

01micko suggested that sometimes forcing the connection speed to be low...might help:
in console: echo "iwconfig wlan0 rate 5.5M fixed" >> /etc/rc.d/rc.local
and reboot after that which means save file creation.

Or do in console:
# ifconfig wlan0 down
# iwconfig wlan0 rate 5.5M fixed
# ifconfig wlan0 up

Thanks - will have a look.

It just seems odd as that has been my primary and rock-solid laptop through several versions and now suddenly is unstable.

Always a new adventure!

Smile

Is this relevant?

The Linux kernel 2.6.38 has some bugs in ath5k. We recommend to install the Linux wireless compatibility package if you are running this kernel and your internet connection is slow or unreliable.

Should not be anymore with 3.4.2 kernel but who knows if there is something odd with this kernel also.
I just had problems with my wireless chip and ath5k. I remember that I tried to compile compat-wireless without luck. Iguleder had problems also with ath5k, but he didnt manage to compile compat-wireless one neither. But it has been a long time now.....

That's right. I had many issues with external wireless drivers, especially when I tried to build them against 2.6.32.

Now I stick with the vanilla 3.0 tree and might switch to 3.2 somewhere in the future, since both are supported for years. I don't like switching kernels, because of issues like this one.

Why don't you just use 3.2, pemasu?

5X3428 does not appear to come with a default E-mail app, only Firefox as the default Web browser.

Is there an E_mail app, eg Thunderbird, that tends to be the most popular?

Is there a significant downside to the Seamonkey suite which Thunderbird addresses?

Is there any probability of problems if one loads Seamonkey?

Thanks!

I believe most email apps work in dpup exprimo. I use Thunderbird. I just download the thunderbird tar ball.....extract it to the /mnt/home....drag symlink of .thunderbird folder to the /root and then I drag thunderbird binary to the desktop and give it icon. I do that base installation seldom. Lastly I had to do that when I had that hdd crash.
Thunderbird updates automatically in that /mnt/home location with my adjustments.
I havent created pet for it....because it would be old in couple of weeks.

Seamonkey should work just fine.

I like Claws Mail personally. But I've used Slypheed and even Alpine for mail before.

Have been away for 2 days so only just able to check out Exprimo 5.X.3.4.2.8.

Frugal install completed successfully. Broadcom 4311 wifi working fine on initial boot, save file created and all working well on reboot.

All is good. Excellent work!!!!

Firefox feels a little too Google & MS-heavy-handed.

It is something other than Thunderbird?

Is it a minimalist E-mail client?

I tried but could not get comfortable with any of those.

I may just stick with Seamonkey. I have an old SM 2.4.1 PET that I load then upgrade.

Thank you majorfoo for testing and giving feedback of remasterpup2 a la rerwin. I have replaced the script in woof.
pemasu, shinobar, majorfoo,
Please be aware that the remasterpup2 in lucid pup is not intended for use in "post-zzz" woof-based puppies, such as exprimo. However, I some time ago posted a version built on the woof version of remasterpup2, along with other related mods. That is the one appropriate for exprimo. Here is the posting with several fixes for porting from lucid into woof.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?p=633525&search_id=1208246813#633525
I am not aware that Barry has responded to that posting. Maybe that version can be merged with a version that supports xz compression (unless it already does).

The main difference is in the calculation of the string appended to the generated sfs files. Lupu uses a shorter string. Barry later increased its length for woof. The risk of using the lupu version is that it might cause boot-up problems. Please use the woof version.
Richard

It's called Simple Mail.

It's rather nice. You can configure it to recieve only, send only or both and you can choose where the mail is stored. I usually store it outside the save file.

It's pretty minimalist.

@Pemasu

I got the Smplayer 0.8 and Youtuber works nicely with it too. So it's good for sticking with Mplayer. I like VLC though.

Merged most recent woof + rerwin's fix against precise alpha + rodin's fix seen in slacko + shinobar's fix.
