I've been trying out the free version of Eagle, which is a decent electronic schematic tool and much more.
If it asks you for a license key, point it in the direction of this directory
/usr/bin/eagle-5.6.0/bin/
there is a nice tutorial here explaining how to position component labels relative to its symbol.
