HowTo draw area transparent with mtPaint? (Solved)
HowTo draw area transparent with mtPaint? (Solved)
I've got the Puppy paw icon, but it has a border & I need that transparent.
It can't be flood painted as the edge has bled outward.
So I need to draw a transparent circle around it & then finish the rest of the border.
Maybe it's a case of cropping or erasing the border instead?

an xpm is just a text file
you can open it as text, and edit the colours if you like
for example, most of the border for that pic seems to be character 1F, so if you change
"1F c #EEE9E6",
to
"1F c None",
it will make the border transparent

yeah, the border wasn't really all one colour, so i zoomed the pic larger and used the drawing tool to paint over the border with one colour ... the colour i picked from the list of colours on the left was probably colour #1 ... then i saved it, and edited the colour of the border, and changed it from the colour number to "None"
so i changed the picture slightly ... there's probably a way to save it with that colour already set to transparent, instead of editing the .xpm in a text editor
or you could use the Gimp

Try this one.
Ok. I zipped it.

GuestToo; That makes sense, it's odd that you can't set a color transparent & draw, brush, or flood with it.
Cropping works well, but there's not many ways to do it that I can see.
To draw a circle around it & set the outside of the circle to be cropped would do the job (maybe).
I'll spend more time with it, I think Gimp is undoubtedly the best way to go, mtPaint is odd.
gliezl; Your pic came up the same way mine did, not quite right, I ment mine to show, but it didn't.
I think you'd have to zip or gzip it to make it downloadable, to show it, I guess it'd have to be png, etc.

What is odd
Odd are those users that waste time in forums instead of reading the docs. Setting transparent color is described in section 3.3.5 of mtPaint's manual; and if user believes that a program should convey its usage rules to him by telepathy instead, it's his own problem.
Really odd is folks that think every one knows where everything is... ESPECIALLY in Linux.
Being as mtPaint has no HELP pull down menu, I looked in:
/usr/man
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/man
/usr/share/applications
/root/my-applications
/root/my-documents/doc/mtpaint
Ah! There it is... & loading it in FireFox & doing a search provides the instructions.
Amazing how a little communication can upset.

Then I've to conclude that aliens somehow ate said menu just to make your life difficult. Because in my copy of mtPaint, the Help menu still sits just where it always did, and has shown absolutely no signs of becoming invisible.sunburnt wrote:Being as mtPaint has no HELP pull down menu, I looked in:
And "Documentation" entry in that menu is of a particular relevance to this discussion.
Try it again...sunburnt wrote: gliezl; Your pic came up the same way mine did, not quite right, I ment mine to show, but it didn't.

Thanks gliezl; It's for the Puppy Login app. I wrote, a Puppy Paw Login that is.
I wrote the Puppy Login a little while back, but I haven't heard from anyone about it.
I wrote a Login Administration tool with MU doing most all of the work (I guess he wrote it).
If the Puppy Login works okay I'll add the Admin. tool to it & post it in Announcements.
