There's no ethernet device listed in your results - it should be Intel Ethernet Pro 100.
Check your bios to see if "LAN" is enabled.
Otherwise, your ethernet interface may be dead.
You're right, I installed a Windows XP driver took off with the HP site, but the network is not working, and even invisibly. Bios does not function around the net, so I guess it's turned on by default.

You should be able to enter the bios by pressing F10 just after power-on.
Sometimes it's difficult to know exactly when the button-press is effective, so to be sure - just keep pressing the F10 button repeatedly.
