Avira Antivir on puppy linux Lucid 5.2.8
Hi,
I saw an Avira unix/linux software and i wondered if i can put it on my puppy because a friend of mine have a very infected computer(Windows of course), and i want to scan it for viruses.
So it is easy to install and works, and is there an ready pet for it?
Thanks in advance

It may be simpler to look at the AVG Rescue CD instead.
Avira has their own rescue CD, too:
Download Avira AntiVir Rescue System
(It only says "Platform: Windows" because the EXE version is a Windows program that downloads the latest definitions (IIRC) before creating the disc. Last time I tested the CD (a while back) it was a Linux-based setup.)
Of course, others have their own rescue CDs as well, but I haven't really looked into them, and therefore don't have links.

I will now look on the video to get how one move it to usb
http://www.avg.com/ca-en/avg-rescue-cd
I looked at one of the videos but did not get how to move the files to USB
and make it bootable? I ahve no cd drive on the small Netbook.

So less than half if I boot from USB. Is that not odd?

Yes the Avira but I talked about the AVG. The Avira says it is for Windows.
But maybe it works for both. I only planned to use it for Linux.
Yes please share how it goes. That would be much appreciated.
Sad that so few contributes to this thread. Maybe I am too impatient.
Do you have full install of linux or frugal for puppy?

As I mentioned above, as far as I know, it only says "Platform: Windows," because there's an EXE program to create a slightly more up-to-date version of the Avira rescue CD - which, of course, is a Windows binary executable. Last time I took a look at it (a while back), it downloaded the latest virus definitions/signatures at the time I was running the program, and created the CD image with those definitions.nooby wrote:Yes the Avira but I talked about the AVG. They don't have a Linux or Mac binary to do the same thing. You can still download the ready-made bootable ISO, however; just know that the definitions on it probably aren't as up-to-date as if you'd used the EXE to create it. Probably not that much of a difference, though (you can always check the upload date of the ISO if you want to see how old it is).

Thanks Yes maybe it is best to use both of them.
Both AVG and Avira and maybe the Clam and Fprot too
if them have similar such rescue now or later.
How does one make the AVG USB bootable? I did not find any text
telling that and the video did not tell either?

I have used the Antivir recovery disk.
It is a linux live CD with their virus checker. (but it is possible that Avira might have changed it since then)
When you first download it the virus definitions are up-to-date.
If you use it later, it attempts to download an update. But it failed when I used it.
Warning! The default is to fix everything it finds.
Antivir is well known for its large number of false positives. So it is probably better to change it to just report what it finds, first. Then you will know what it will break, when you tell it to fix everything.

What AV apps are you using in Puppy? I'm running lupupluslibre, aka Lucid 5.2.8 005 plus, and have only found fprot so far. Is there a pet or a compatible deb package for av-clam, AVG, or Avira?
I need to scan my Win partition system files, but Fprot won't do it.
BTW - if you haven't found a suitable app for installing liveCD to USB, the best I've found is the one from Fedora (IIRC). It's a Windows program though. I successfully installed Centos and Knoppix to USB using it.

Good luck nooby. I share your sentiment, but having once or twice had to wrestle with an infected system, I prefer to make some fumbling attempts at protection, no matter how ill-informed.nooby wrote:Sorry, I use no AV at all.
I sure need to most likely
but a combination of laziness
and lack of know how makes
it a bit too demanding just now.
I I have no advice to give.
