Hello BarryK
Thanks for the latest Precise Puppy 5.3.91
I have tried some experiments with the package manager.
It hasn't gone to sleep on me yet.
The precise update packages still get downloaded and create separate databases, but they do not merge as it says it will do.
The result is too many Ubuntu repos for the PPM to handle at once.
I have tried deleting the update databases from the .Packages directory and updating just the precise updates on their own, but the outcome is the same.
I have added a PPA on launchpad.net. It works, and it installs all of the dependencies from ubuntu various, but forgot to install the package from launchpad.net. It does install the package if I do it on its own, which is good enough for me.
A couple of omissions I have noticed so far:
The symbolic link to GNU linux i386 is missing from /usr/bin so python failed to install there. I copied the link from /usr/lib and then python did install
lsb_release is missing. I installed the lsb-release package and the error went away.

@jplt
We need more information to go on.
One way you can obtain this is to post some logs.
Before you run xorgwizard it is important that you capture the failed attempt to start X. This can be done by saving the /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
Before you run xorgwizard, please run this command: | Code: | | cp -a /var/log/Xorg.0.log /root |
Then gzip it:
Once you have X running post this file to the forum.
Also, you can gzip and post /var/log/messages (or output of dmesg)
Thanks

Still have this problem.
Dell desktop
Pentium 4 processor
Nvidia nv37gl Quadro video card
precise 5.3.91 frugal
Boots to desktop
Some desktop program icons missing or half visible
no items visible in menus
Some program icons in taskbar, but not all
The icons/entry's that should be showing in menu and taskbar. You can put mouse pointer at the location where they should be and left click will run the program that should have an icon/entry at that location.
Seems to be using Nouveau graphic driver.
To get working desktop have to run Xorgwizard and choose Vesa driver. Adding nouveau.modeset=0, to kernel line of bootloader entry, also works.

Just an observation about getting packages from Ubuntu repositories.
Notice the example picture.
Sure seems to need a lot of dependencies.
Notice the complete download size to get this program and its dependencies.

Talking about PPM.
I suggest that the confirmation buttons, such as for trim are placed at the top of the screen and not down.
Indeed when there is a long list, the buttons are out of screen, and it's only by KNOWING how many tabs and then hitting enter, that it works.
Also issues about sound:

Tried installing xfce from PPM
. . . 'installation' fast
but when I ran 'xwin xfce4' from the prompt - which might be the wrong command . . . I returned to jwm
Then I could not get to the prompt from the keyboard or the menu.
In fact the keyboard was not working at all . . .
