How do I save an AbiWord document to floppy?

#1 Post by CrowDaddy »

Please excuse a re-e-e-ally simple-minded question, but how can I
save a document composed in AbiWord to a floppy disk? I am not very
new to Linux (Xandros 1, 2 and 3, Mepis, Damn Small, etc) but after al-
most an hour of fiddling around, darned if I can get it to save to a floppy.
All I get is "error saving file" or something like that. I spect its some-
thing quite simple that I just overlooked.
Also, just as a by-the-way, in AbiWord I have no apostrophe; I get
nothing, the cursor doesn't move and it doesn't print the ' I have to type
on without it. H-m-m-m.
Other than those two things, Puppy is just fantastic. I got a copy of it
when it first came out. It was cute but so basic, I found it unattractive and
moved on. This Puppy is amazing; I love it!!!

Before you can save a file to floppy, you have to mount the floppy or any other disk you want to use.
Go to utilities, its the first selection. Once it is mounted you can read or write to floppy.
Also, on the apostrophe problem.....I am using Puppy 1.0.3 and it works fine in this Abiword. Maybe you had a problem on the download. Did you use the checksum to verify a good download?

re the missing apostrophe in AbiWord

Actually, I didn't download Puppy at all; I burned my cd from the ISO on a cd in Linux Format magazine. (I have dial up in a rural area and this makes it
very chancey to download any large files because telephone service here is
not always up to snuff.)
I have not had time to try out your answer to my question but I expect it
will clear it up. Thanks for the speedy reply. You people have done an
awesome job with Puppy and with this forum.

Tell me what version of Puppy you have. I can try to duplicate the problem.

i find wget quite reliable, and it will resume an interupted download

Puppy is available by bit torrent too, which is very reliable ... it automatically downloads a small chunk at a time, and each chunk is checked using sha-1 checksums, so you are sure your copy is an exact duplicate of the original

Puppy 1.0.3 and Pizzapup 1.0.1 are available at http://linuxtracker.org/

ctorrrent can be downloaded and installed from the dotpups page

Got it! I played around this afternoon and saved to floppy and cd with no problem. It's just a bit different from the distros I've used --- they did it automatically. This proves that problems are the best teachers.
One thing, though, when I mounted the cd using the utility as you said,
it told me I failed. Neverthless, it did save it correctly, as I closed Abi after- ward and then reopened it and reopened the file from the cd with no problem
I used Thumbs to check first and make sure it was there.
Also, regarding the apostrophe problem, I found that everything goes well if I <space> after the apostrophe; it shows up as it should and I can go on typing whatever the word is and it turns out ok.
I also listened to some mp3s. Clear as a bell! I just love this distro! And you guys give the best help --- no spike-booted distro Nazis who think their special way is the best and newbies not welcome. I am overwhelmed by the possibilities I see here!
Also, a thousand thanks for the advice about downloading.

Your detailed report of what worked - and what didn't - is the best way to thank us. Thank you. :)

I still wonder what version you are using. My Abiword does not have this problem, and as I said I am using the 1.0.3 version of Puppy.

re what version of Puppy

#10 Post by CrowDaddy »

this is version 0.9.8 according to Linux Format magazine. It just took a little fiddling to get the save-to-floppy right. The cd save, as I said, was quite squirrelly acting but it does work, it just lies to me sometimes.
I have another question about Puppy. If I can get it to take me on the
web (I can't yet because have a WinModem, but I'm looking around for an external modem) would this protect me from malware at all? It seems to me that it would, but my friend says no.
