Puppy 5.2; frugal install
I have Puppy installed on 2 different USB drives on 2 different laptops with Dropbox 11.43 on each one. Dropbox has been working perfectly on both until today and now neither works - ¨downloading file list¨ but nothing happens. I have restarted DB to no avail. My DB on an Ubuntu and an XP computer work fine.
I cannot seem to find a similar problem on the forums so I appeal for ideas. Is there an extra step I have forgotten?

Addendum: now next day and both are working as they should without me doing anything differently. It is a mystery to me!

I can't get Dropbox to work at all in any of my frugal installs. Every time I restart the computers I am always prompted to re enter the info I entered when I first activated Dropbox. What am I doing wrong? Am I using the wrong version of Dropbox? If so which version should I be using and where do I get it? I am using a version I found in one of the puppy forums. Can't remember off hand what it is.

I am using puppy Linux 5.2.8

hi rmcellig , yes this suddenly started to happen a while ago as discussed in one of the dropbox threads. This portable version seems to work fine though http://sourceforge.net/projects/portable/files/Dropbox%201.1.43/download

make sure you delete your old install, (the two hidden folders in /root/)

Thanks so much! I will try this out. To save space on my HD I will create a new Dropbox folder and just sync that one without syncing the tons of folders I already have in Dropbox.

Hi 666philb,

The link you posted to 1.1.43 seems to be a dead link. It says that that version is no longer available at that location.

I think it was my fault. Sorry about this. I launched the link on my ipod. When launching it on my laptop I could see that the dropbox file was automatically downloading. It seems to work great on restart. Only thing is that I have to always click on the Dropbox 1.1.43 file to manually launch it. Is there a way to automate this on restart?

Thanks again!! I was pulling my hair out trying to get Dropbox to work in a Frugal install. That is until now Smile I think it was because I was using an older version of DB?

drag and drop the dropbox portable to /root/Startup and choose 'link relative' to autostart dropbox

Like this? It's a relative symlink by the way.

No dice. Doesn't work. It's funny because I can open up the Startup folder and click on the Dropbox file and it starts up fine. When restarting my machine doesn't work. I also noted that when I go into the Startmount prrogram and select for example sda7 to automount on restart, it doesn't.

Any ideas?

I like working in icewm as well as openbox. I tried with both and dropbox still does not work on startup. I have to manually invoke it to work.

Ok, I think I've localized the problem.
It's because of delayedrun script (at least the one in Slacko 5.3.3) doesn't handle filenames with spaces in /root/Startup folder.

Fortunately, you have 3 possibilities:

1. Rename Dropbox 1.1.43 to Dropbox_1.1.43 and then make a symlink.

2. Use script instead of symlink, and put it into /root/Startup, eg.:
Code:
#! /bin/sh
exec /path/to/"Dropbox 1.1.43"

3. Modify /usr/sbin/delayedrun script.
There is:
Code:
  [ -x "$a" ] && $a &

and should be:
Code:
  [ -x "$a" ] && "$a" &

Greetings!

Bingo!! Wow am I ever happy!! I am another step closer to using Puppy Linux as my main OS on all of my PC's. Getting Dropbox to work in a Frugal install has been a MAJOR stumbling block for me until now that is Smile What I did was put the Dropb 1.1.43 file in my Dropbox folder. I renamed it dropbox1143. Then I put a relative symlink into my Startup folder and restarted. All is well now.

I know this is not related to this post but if there are any HTML coders out there that can help me with my site code that would be awesome. I have the code, I just need to know of a quick way of searching replacing the code I have. You would have to see it to understand but I don't think it is that hard.
