Did you try this yourself?

1. Go to the first page of this thread.
2. Select Print any way you want.
3. Select the CUPS-PDF device.
4. Select any subset of pages.
5. Watch while Opera churns out 15 pages.

Sorry
I do not use Opera. I was just pointing out printing seems to be a general problem with Opera and one possible solution that was said to work.
Hope you stopped printing before churning out 15 pages.

Ok.. here is what to consider.

Is this a showstoppper bug? (opera printing). Is opera a better option than seamonkey? (It has mail, a decent wysiswyg editor).. with I ship Flash, w/o I dont. Seamonkey is failing on older arches (i586). Is opera? (don't know yet). Do we forget both and ship firefox, sylpheed and no wysiwyg editor? (that will be no flash too). The seamonkey-solibs package is absolutely needed if there is no seamonkey shipped. It's about 4M xz compressed. So there is really no gain at all with shipping firefox except in the 'popularity' stakes. (ssl and ssh are compiled against nspr and nss).

Size is still certainly a consideration, even though this has bloated out to 150M with xz compression (that would be about 175 gz). It is a requirement to ship with mesa with these new kernels, and I think slackware is compiling all xorg drivers with the dependency. Min requirements for slacko have been 1 GHz proc, and 512M (recommended) RAM, though you can get away with less.

Just my random thoughts before I hit the sack.

Printing through CUPS-PDF > ePDFView > printer seems to work reliably, provided that you remember to do it. So I don't think that it classifies as a show-stopper.

But I'm a Firefox guy, so I'm not really qualified to comment.

Slacko - beta [5.4]

#225 Post by Billtoo »

01micko wrote:Billtoo.. funny, I d'loaded kde games and PPM says that the dep (libdbusmenus-qt) is installed, I couldn't find it though, another PPM bug.

Meanwhile, I patched jwm-menu_create to recognise the kde4 desktop dir.
I saw that too, it showed libdbusmenus-qt with a check mark as installed but when I tried to run kshisen from the terminal it wouldn't run and said libdbusmenus-qt was missing.I found it elsewhere in ppm, official slacko repository I think, and installed it from there to get it working.

I applied your new pet and now the games show up in the menu but they still don't run from it, I'm using gexec to start my favorite kdegames.

The compiling is working okay now, thanks.

It's easy to download, unpack in /mnt/home,drag binary and icon to
desktop, the newest Seamonkey and Firefox (unless you're on dialup of
course), it's a browser bonanza.
Works fine for browsing at least, I don't use a printer so I don't
know about that.

Slacko - beta [5.4]

#231 Post by ETP »

Manual frugal install to fat32 USB2 stick. Syslinux 4.04 boot.
Initial boot to desktop with expected res (1920x1080) using Nouveau driver. Working sound & wired ethernet.

Installed & tested the following pets:
  • fontwizard|Configure fonts for LCD
    faenza_lrx_new|
    Blue-Tripack|JWM themes
    pupsaveconfig-2.2.4|PupSave personal storage setup
    google_chrome-21-slacko|Access the Internet
flashplayer11-11.2.202.238|Adobe Flash Player 11 browser plugin and Preferences. Note, this may not work on older PCs, use instead an earlier 11.x or even 10.x
    PupSnap-1.8_Scrot-0.8_32Bit|PupSnap screen capture
Browser:
Playdayz's Chrome 21 pet works fine and may be a better alternative to Opera/Seamonkey. (flash built in)

PPM:
Strange green icons showed up: (See screen-shot)

Opera thoughts & other oddities

#232 Post by peebee »

I'm not an Opera fan - I particularly dislike its very complicated font handling - see screenie attached.

I've tried loading chromium-19.0.1072.0-slacko.pet - it doesn't run but strangely if run from terminal it gives what appears to be a success message but doesn't run.

On uninstallling it, my defautlbrowser was set to mozstart - not back to opera.

Also on uninstalling I had a disappearing cursor across part of the ppm window......

But I'm a Firefox guy, so I'm not really qualified to comment.

The PC in my house is used by wife and kids. Despite the fact that they are intelligent enough to memorize this, it is prone to be forgotten, eating into my ink and paper budget. In my personal case I would not install Opera, just to prevent the hassle. In my case for Opera it is a showstopper, not for Slacko ....

..and opera was looking so promising.. I'll still try with the opera devs but the bug has been there for ages, and as usual with anything cross platform, Linux bugs get the least attention. I still may use it for a THINSlacko build since I did all the work to get it playing 'kind of' nice with puppy. That mozstart thing mentioned (peebee) must be hard coded in woof somewhere, I tried to prise all that stuff out. Looks like I'll have to make it a symlink to defaultbrowser.

Chrome/chromium/iron are nice, but just too big, the smallest compressed is iron @35M (xz).

peebeee, I believe Chromium is very difficult to compile, it needs special tools install and other stuff. Best to use a deb and modify it for Puppy, that's how it's done I believe.

Next beta (a week maybe?), depends largely on these stupid PPM bugs, which never existed before. I remember installing FF from Slackware and getting the menu entry, kde games the same, in previous slacko versions.. and they ran. I have put code in fixmenus to delete the /etc/profile.d/*.csh files, so that bug will finally be fixed. I asked for that to be fixed ages ago. At least in fixmenus it saves me diffing PPM everytime I woof, which I might have to do anyway because I'll likely have to fix the bugs for slacko.

So maybe firefox eh? & Sylpheed. We'll miss an html editor (well I will) but I'll stick Kompozer and BlueGriffon in PPM. Bluefish is there, works too I think, buts not really wysiwyg. I really want to give seamonkey the boot. That 2M has pissed me off! (re earlier rant about SM).

PAE version for tests is released, k3.5.5 See main post

Anyone else finding that the downloading from the smokey01 website is very slow?

Normally that iso would come to me in about a minute, but it is telling me an hour and a half, running at about 30 kb/s. Same happened yesterday when I downloaded a .pet from the site.

@ 01micko

I find Opera quite good apart from occasional rendering glitches and peculiarities, I don't run a printer here though.
In operational terms I like SeaMonkey and would probably install it in a future Slacko if not included. I am no expert but wonder if the increased size is html5 stuff which is working towards a flash alternative/substitute. The latest SeaMonkey and Opera that I downloaded appeared to both be around 43 M installed, but in Opera about 16 M was locales. An individual user might be able to remove all the unwanted ones to reduce size, but I guess you would want to ship with them all included. For many users the browser is the most important thing so I wouldn't worry about a few megs here and there.

Do you know why the SM in Slacko displays the red "old version" warning when the one in Wary (which is also old and has the updater disabled) does not? Is this a configure option perhaps? A SeaMonkey which is a few versions old is not a major problem if it doesn't have that warning. Would compiling with the updater enabled introduce problems?

As you say, if you want to appeal to the general public then maybe Firefox is best because of the familiarity factor, but lets see what others say and ultimately the decision is yours. Thanks for all the hard work.

Slacko - beta [5.4]

I've been having some fun customizing 5360 pae by adding
openbox+tint2+wbar.
It's pretty time consuming but I like the result, I'd better back up
my save file before I break something :)

Pleased and surprised to see tempiconsvg pick up my new video card temperature but the icon shows as blue with very small text.
Is there a quick fix for this? ........... Mind you MS would describe it as a "feature" rather than a bug.
