Problems getting Wifi working
Problems getting Wifi working
I am running live from cd wary puppy on an old desktop with 256M ram. It has a usb wifi adapter with RALink rt2870 chip, which I cannot seem to get set up in puppy. There is no installed driver in the pulldown menu for this chip. I tried installing the linux driver that came with it, but it did not show up in the menu. Likewise the envelope surrounded .inf xp driver did not work either. What to try next?

Good day mate...welcome to Puppy.
Please tell us which exact Puppy version you have...
we have heaps of Puppies...
and your machine hardware specs.
We can then point you to a Puppy that can work on your machine.
I know you have given us your wireless card specs
" usb wifi adapter with RALink rt2870 chip "
but I want the brand as well.
Then we can absolutely make it work.
Also please reply back...
and if we fix you up....please edit the post as solved.
Try this version

Hello,
I also have the rt2860/5370 card in a Compaq CQ-56..
Some of my older pups need ndiswrapper and the XP driver, others I/others have compiled rt5390 against the kernel..
But the newest pups, IE Dpup Exprimo, Precise etc use the rt2800 driver with success..
Newer pups with a 3+ kernel sometimes refuse to turn on the card after boot.
Either manually turn on the card via the switch BEFORE X loads, or from the desktop, in a terminal, enter:
ifconfig wlan0 up
where "wlan0" is your interface name to turn it on, then run the network wizard.. (not Frisbee)
Good luck...

Wary Puppy 5.3 boots and runs well in general on this box, just need to figure out how to get the usb wifi to work, so I can connect to internet.
w/o adapter installed:rcrsn51 wrote:You first need to determine the vendor:product ID codes for this device. Unplug the adapter and run "lsusb". Then plug it in and run "lsusb" again. It has a usb wifi adapter with RALink rt2870 chip,
Report back with the codes.

w/ adapter installed

Bus 001 Dev 002 ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology Corp
Looks like I was wrong about the chip, 2870 was the number that was on the drivers cd.
Ok!

Try Lucid Puppy. Tempestuous has a driver called rt5370sta here.ackptui wrote:Bus 001 Dev 002 ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology Corp
I checked and it supports your 148f:5370 device. If this driver works for you but you still want Wary, I may be able to build you the corresponding version.
This did not fly; kernel panic: not synching midway thru loadrcrsn51 wrote:Try Lucid Puppy. Tempestuous has a driver called rt5370sta here.
This booted up OK, tried the rt2870sta driver which did not find the dongle.cthisbear wrote:Maybe try Kinda Lucid...updated Puppy 4.31

Did not see a driver for the rt5370.
These drivers are kernel-specific. So a driver made for Lupu won't work in a Puppy 431 variant.ackptui wrote:This booted up OK, tried the rt2870sta driver which did not find the dongle.Did not see a driver for the rt5370.
Try the attached driver in Wary 5.3.

The following package has been successfully installed:rcrsn51 wrote:Just click on it.
PACKAGE: rt5370sta_wary_k2.6.32.uni-2.5.0.3
CATEGORY: none
...note, this package does not have a menu entry.
Then I went into the Network Wizard to load the driver. It was in the menu, but when I tried to load it, I got this error message:
Loading rt5730sta failed with the following error message:
FATAL: Module rt5370sta not found.
Maybe try a different driver.
Tried to run the pet several times, always says it loaded, it shows up in the driver list of Network Wizard, when I try to load the driver from the list I get the fatal error. modprobe gives the same error. lsmod shows a list in which it is not present. *pulls out hair*puppyluvr wrote: should show if it loaded, then try the wizard again...
This is my mistake. I built the driver in Wary 522 in the belief that Wary 530 just had user-land improvements. But it also changed kernels.
I'll get back to you on this.
[Update] I went to BK's site where he keeps the kernel sources and I couldn't find k2.6.32.59 for Wary 5.3.
So your alternative is to use Wary 522.
