build: no such file or directory

#1 Post by cathawk »

New to puppy. I've got wary puppy 5.3 installed but need internet access. Found driver files for my edimax usb wireless adaptor which needed 'make' command. Loaded dev_x_wary_5.3.sfs and now have 'make' command but during execution returns error "/lib/modules/2.6.32.59/build: No such file or directory". The /lib/modules/2.6.32.59 directory exists, just no 'build'. Now I'm stuck, can someone help me?

Hello Cathawk- Welcome!

In order to compile drivers, you need the *kernel* src as well.. http://bkhome.org/sources/

As a first step, you need to determine the [vendor:product] ID codes for your adapter. With the device unplugged, run the command "lsusb". Then plug it in and run "lsusb" again. Report back.

Where did you get the driver files?

Thanks for helping!
http://bkhome.org/sources/ link wants a username/password. Tried mine for this forum but didn't work.
Driver files came from manufacterer edimax.

Use puppy/linux. But the kernel sources you need aren't there. Go here.

However, your install instructions may not be appropriate for Puppy. That's why I need more information.

1. the [vendor:product] ID codes.
2. the model name
3. A link to the driver files.

rcrsn51, here is all the info, it looks like your link to sfs file will load just like dev_x so I won't need to manually compile kernel?

lsusb says "Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 7392:7811"
The first line shows without device inserted and repeats after.

Adapter is Edimax EW-7811Un.

link to driver files: http://www.edimax.com/en/support_detail ... &pl2_id=44

Their instructions when you unzip and view powerpoint doc file:
(1) step1: uncompress the “rtl8192cu_linux_v2.0.xxxx.2010xxxx.tar.g z

You just copy the driver's source folder into /usr/src/linux and "make" it there.

I have built a PET for Wary 5.3. When you run the Network Wizard > Load Modules, you should now see 8192cu.

Thanks so much for helping, but I'm confused. It looks like the PET file you kindly supplied installs my drivers. Network wizard found 8192cu and I loaded it but the "New module loaded" window says 'new module has been loaded:8192cu
No new interfaces detected.
Click the 'Unload' button....try to load another one.' Also of note, the light on the adapter is not on. Help....

Unplug and replug the device.

Run "dmesg" and see if there are any messages about it.

Run "lsmod". Are there any modules named "r8192s_usb or "ieee*" being loaded? If so, run

Code: Select all

rmmod r8192s_usb
rmmod ieee80211_rsl
rmmod ieee80211_crypt_ccmp
rmmod ieee80211_crypt_tkip
rmmod ieee80211_crypt_wep
rmmod ieee80211_crypt
rmmod 8192cu

modprobe 8192cu
Unplug\replug and run

Code: Select all

ifconfig -a
Do you get a wlan0 interface?

Sorry it's taking me so long, but I'm still learning EVERYTHING. Just figured out how to copy console output to file, then must transfer to keydriver to computer with internet access. Here are all of my outputs...
About half way down dsmesg says 'modprobe: page allocation failure. order:3, mode:0x20', similiar msg further down. See bottom, Bash didn't find 'rnmod' but I ran other commands in case it tells you something important.

# rnmod r8192s_usb
bash: rnmod: command not found
The command is "r m mod" as in "remove module".

But there's something else going on here. You appear to be loading drivers for a PCMCIA card. Do you have one installed?

This is an old laptop that has PCM port that used to house a wired ethernet adaptor, but now is empty.

I know nothing about PCMCIA, so I don't understand what is happening here. But the dmesg output shows a problem with the new 8192cu module.

Do you have a different, more conventional machine that you can test this on?
