Puppy for Athlon XP

#1 Post by turboscrew »

I've been running Lupu 5.2.8 for about a year now (full install) and I've started to think that maybe Frugal install would be better for me.

Now that there has also been some problems due to the fact that the default processor for which the SW is compiled, seems to be too new for my old processor - Athlon XP 1900+. This processor doesn't support sse2 and newer instructions.

I was wondering if Wary would be better for me than Lupu?

Questions
  • How much RAM do you have?
  • Do you have the ability to burn and boot from CD/DVD?
  • Do you have other PCs on your LAN?

It just so happens that I use an old Athlon XP box as my primary Linux computer.

-Computer-
Processor : AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+
Memory : 1033MB (198MB used)
Operating System : Unknown distribution
User Name : root (root)
Date/Time : Mon 15 Oct 2012 10:45:10 PM CDT
-Display-
Resolution : 1440x900 pixels
OpenGL Renderer : Unknown
X11 Vendor : The X.Org Foundation
-Multimedia-
Audio Adapter : VIA8233 - VIA 8235

My main Puppy install is a full install of Lucid 528 as well...... the only software I've had a problem with is some builds of Iron/Chrome/Chromium that won't run, pretty much everything else has worked without problem. I do have a gb of ram and another gb of swap though.

I also have a frugal install of Wary 5.3 too....... it does seem to use a bit less resources than Lucid. Testing Pemasu's latest 5.X.3.6.2.1 right now( with k-3.6.2) and it appears to be working well too.

EDIT:
I also have an Athlon XP 1700+ that I occasionally use....... it runs Lucid 528 as well.

Yes, there is a CD/DVD with which I burned the Lupu install CD and then
booted from it to install that Lupu.

Funny, Lupu doesn't seem to recognize the CD/DVD.
It's Philips SPD2414BD.

It work fine with Windows2000 (dual boot)..

Your optical drive is a rebadged LITE-ON LH-20A1P model, at least according to Google.

If you're in the States and you can foot the shipping cost (should be less than $10 for sure) I can send you a replacement that should work better. I can even test it before I send it (although I'll need to know which version of Lupu you're using). I've got a ton of these drives lying around -- although the vast majority are Combo Drives*, I have a few DVD burners and "multi drives".

*A Combo Drive formally is a CD-R/RW-DVD-ROM drive. It will read and write CDs but only read DVDs -- no DVD burning. Personally, I almost never burn DVDs (I think I've done that exactly twice in the past 18mo or so) but YMMV.

@starhawk: I'm from Finland, and I don't think I need a replacement for the drive.

Well, it looks like I'll keep my Lupu 5.2.8, but just change the installation from full install to frugal.

Thanks, all, for help.
