Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.6.2.1 with kernel 3.6.2 Subject description: Debian squeeze packages based dpup, built using woof2 and kernel-kit |
|
Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.6.2.1 with 3.6.2 kernel has been released.
Aufs 3.6 was announced today and I couldnt resist. I downloaded kernel 3.6.2. And I recompiled the kernel couple of times and here is 3.6.2 kernel Dpup for testing.
The woof version and applications are the same as in Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.4.12.
This release is for getting possible feedback about 3.6.2 kernel and usage of it in Puppy. There might be changes which need to be faced.

Initial Report -- AOK |
|
Hi pemasu,
Great work again. My specs:
Processor: 4x AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 945 Processor
Memory: 3375MB
ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics supporting 1600x900 pixels
RaLink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI
SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: VT1708B Analog
SB {HDA ATI SB], device 1: VT1708B Digital
Sound and wireless worked OOTB. Installed amd_fglrx_catalyst-12.6-K3.4.2-dpup.pet to see if it would work. Installed OK. Rebooted. Called up console & typed "aticonfig --initial" which was accepted. Rebooted into 1600x900 desktop using fglrx driver. Perhaps you can drop the k3.4.2 designation from the pet.
More later.

Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.6.2.1 live pfix=ram.
Sound and internet working and as expected booted to a black screen with "monitor out of range" message. Did ctrl/alt/bksp to xorgwizard and got correct resolution.

Exprimo 5.X.3.6.2.1
Very nice....
Everything that worked in version-12 works very well here in 3.6.2.1!
Don't know exactly what advantages the new kernel will provide for puppy but I'm sure it eventually make it self known as more testers dig in!
One thing I do notice, my box seems to run with less fan noise than before and CPU temp is cooler.
Keep up the excellent work!!!!!
I do believe Exprimo should make it to Distrowatch prime-time as an 'OFFICIAL PUPPY'!

That happens for me also with my quad core acer laptop. My laptop runs significantly cooler with this kernel.

Well...this is experimental test how well this kernel behaves. Also...newer kernels provide updated drivers. Which means that all the time new chip id`s have been added to the drivers and now and then wholly new drivers pop up with new kernel versions.

That's it so far, still testing.
EDIT: I was able to download audacious from ppm but I couldn't get it to run, I was able to compile an older version (3.2.2) and it is working okay.

Hi everyone !
This Distro is a dream . It runs so smooth and mellow on my old Toshiba Satellite 3000 , on my Desktop-computer and on a small HP Dell-notebook .Compared to those bad old Windows days my live has became a kind of digital wellness trip since .
Thanks alot pemasu and Barry Kauler and all you keen unnamed Linux and Puppy developers , to help me escape from those Orwellian digital FEMA-Camp nightmare called Windows -Microsoft .
Wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year .!

I too can confirm this build runs snappier and cooler on my eeepc. Something has changed in it, you can feel the difference. It is not huge, but noticeable.

Hi pemasu,
Fresh manual frugal install to USB2 fat32 flash drive with syslinux 4.04 boot. (Pentium D 3.4 MHz)
Initial boot to desktop with NV driver @ 1920x1080 60Hz 16bit, working sound and wired ethernet.
Manually installed the 304.51 Nvidia driver, then installed & tested the following pets:
fontwizard-0.0.1|Configure fonts for LCD
chromium-19-dpup|Browse the Web
getflash-1.2|GetFlash Install Flashplayer
flashplayer11-11.2.202.243|Adobe Flash Player 11 browser plugin and Preferences. Note, this may not work on older PCs, use instead an earlier 11.x or even 10.x
qt-4.8.0-basic-with-qtwebkit-dpup|no description provided
smplayer-0.8.1|Add file(s) to the SMPlayer playlist
faenza_lrx_new|
mplayer2-vdpau-17062012|no description provided
I struggled to get chromium to recognise the latest flash player but when I disabled the earlier one in "about:plugins" all was well. DVB-T worked fine with
smplayer using XV. I have yet to try vdpau with some test files.
This is an extremely polished and comprehensive pup. I agree that it is marginally quicker and uses a lot less memory. OOTB it was only using 68 meg and after I disabled
a few laptop & wireless related items it went down to 52 meg which is incredible!
Many thanks for all your hard work and this excellent pup.

Dpup Exprimo 5.X.3.6.2.1 with kernel 3.6.2 Subject description: Testing |
|
Hi pemasu,
Sorry to have to report a problem with the USB stick install. At close of play I decided via PupControl to increase the size of the ext4 save-file having only started with a small one.
Upon reboot I was greeted with a kernel panic and a vfs block error which forced me to do a hard shutdown. Rebooting into another pup (Slacko 5.3.3.2) on the same stick but in an entirely different directory, I was amazed when it proceeded to increase the save file size.
It would appear that the flag (to increase the size) was placed incorrectly there and Exprimo did not see the new size of save-file that it was expecting and became rabid.
I have not seen this behaviour before when increasing save-file sizes on a stick holding multiple pups.
It may be to do with this:
| Quote: | | Savefile creation at first shutdown happens now in X |
