New Puppy 412 dedicated website

#21 Post by Monsie »

hi tuxtoo,

It seems odd that your internal drives are not being detected. What is your output when you run

Code: Select all

probedisk

at the terminal? I would think that the kernel in 4.1.2 should have support for the newer SATA drives.

hi monsie

Thanks for replying. I have done as you suggest and the output in the terminal is-

Code: Select all

/dev/sda|Direct-Access|USB BAR
Which means absolutely nothing to me

Edit
I should say that the HD is 500gb has a 4gb swap partition (same amount of RAM) and three equal partitions formatted as ext3.

Using 'wellminded linux' to search the above terminal output I found two other commands to try-

Code: Select all

probepart
outputs the following

Code: Select all

/dev/sda | ext3 | 253920

Code: Select all

disktype
ouputs the following

Code: Select all

Usage: disktype <device/file> . . .
I don't know if this gives any clues.

:D Hello,
This drive wasnt ever a Win Vista drive was it?
Check the bios and see if it shows as IDE/SATA,
Vista machines had some other label, like AHCI or something,, but made the drive basically invisible...
You can change it in the bios,
Close the Windows, and open your eyes, to a whole new world

New Puppy 412 dedicated website

#24 Post by Monsie »

tuxtoo,

It looks like only your usb drive is being detected :( Puppy 4 came out with a new method of hardware detection that was encapsulated in pup_event and it was supposed to include lots of improvements. However, there were some issues with the kernel around this time...

Are you perchance running Puppy 4.1.2 retro version with the 2.6.21 kernel? Apparently, this kernel has a reputation of spotty detection of internal drives --I noticed that Barry K commented about this in a line when he edited Probedisk2 which is currently used in Puppy. Also, I found this thread over here which may be of interest to you. If you are indeed running the retro version, I suggest trying the regular version with the 2.6.25 kernel.

That said, you might have to accept that Puppy 4.1.2 will work best on an older system... one with drives that use the traditional ide connection. You may have to look around for a used system, but even then, it might be fairly easy to find a desktop with decent performance that is about five to six years old...

In the meantime, use Wary, Racy, or one of the newer puppies... but I will add my two cents here and recommend that you keep your Puppy 412 website going. You've designed a very attractive site, and have put together some really great packages including OpenOffice, so it would be a shame to see it go to waste. Actually, I don't think it would be a waste because I believe there are plenty of Puppy users out there like myself who find a lot of value in Puppy when they are able to keep an older computer running well. :)

hth,

First of all, thanks for all your help and advice guys.

puppyluvr

If you don't mind I will take you up on your offer to-
I also have MANY pets compiled for, and on, 4.12.
I can post them to my meownplanet link if you like.
and I will mirror them on 412collection. As for the HD, it was formatted to NTFS when I got it but I formatted it to ext3 and it is set to IDE in the BIOS so I can only have access to Puppy-412 from a usb drive.

monsie

I am running Puppy-412 with the 2.6.25 kernel and I tried the solution you linked to in your post to no avail. It looks like you are on the ball with Puppy-412 detecting only the usb drives, but as I said, I can still boot Puppy-412 from a usb drive for testing purposes. So I will definitely be able to keep 412collection up and running and thanks for your comments on 412collection, it's nice when people appreciate it. Although 412collection has been neglected in the last week or so due to my PC problems .

I am currently using Wary-512, HD install with no problems. So at least I have my favourite OS on my new box. I could get a hold of an older PC to run Puppy-412 but I just don't have the space to set up a second desktop PC, much as I would like to.

Hi Tuxtoo,
this is a great idea. I really enjoy giving the older puppies a spin - it is amazing how many of them still work perfectly well on really cheap hardware (or even lightning quick on newer hardware).

I have a couple of questions:
1) I see you have softmaker office2008 on the website - have you found a way to get it to read docx files on 4.1.2?
2) I didn't find a link to a 4.1.2 iso on the website (maybe I just missed it...). Would it be appropriate to have a link to the iso? cheers!

@ greengeek - I think TextMaker2008 didn't actually have the docx capabilities that are claimed. I was impressed enough anyway to buy the SoftMaker Office 2010 and 2012 - handles whatever shenanighans M$ Office can serve up.
The AbiWord that prit and runtt21 had going in MacPup520 (and later) has impressive docx handling, from what I tested. Could it be reverse-engineered into a 412 environment maybe?

hi greengeek

Like Puppyt says I don't think SMO2008 has the ability to open docx files. Although, from what I see on the forum Abiword 2.6.4 has this ability. There is an online converter http://www.docx2doc.com/.

You are correct about the lack of a link to the main Puppy-412 iso and I will include one. I will, in the next 3 or 4 days be making more 412 based puplets available; Photo Artist worshop iso (P.A.W). webserverpuppy1.iso with Hiawatha and webserverpuppyx1.iso with Apache web server for those who are interested in web development.

I was going to include Cybercafe iso but it is based on 421 and not 412 as I first though. It's just that I want to keep the iso's available to be based on 412 as in this web sites moniker.

Drive problem [SOLVED]

#30 Post by tuxtoo »

I have managed to solve the problem with Puppy-412 not detecting the HD or DVD/CD drive on my new box. The problem lay with the new style UEFI BIOS. In the 'Advanced' section of the BIOS there is a menu called 'SATA configuration' selecting this and then from the sub-menu select 'SATA mode selection' with three selections; IDE (the default), AHCI and disabled.

Changing the 'SATA mode selection' from IDE to AHCI solved the problem and I now have access as normal on Puppy-412 to the HD and DVD/CD drive. Sorted!

This may help Puppy Users who want to run older versions of Puppy on newer hardware with the newer style UEFI BIOS.

Way to go, tuxtoo... some good troubleshooting there. :)

Your situation makes me wonder about the value of somebody starting a new thread for the Community regarding how to resolve issues for those members with new computers that have the UEFI BIOS.

Just some food for thought...

Hi Tuxtoo,
just won myself a coupla laptops on an on-line auction. They may well be dead paperweights, as they were listed as "untested"-on account of missing ac power supplies... anyways they're of PII and PIII vintage, 128-512 MB RAM, circa1999-2001, and I realised that Puppy4 would be my best bet to replace whatever OS was there previously. Just reviewed your repository - good work with updating with Snap2 etc, thanks! Reminds me of some shortcomings in Puppy4 - what do you think of Silverpuppy's method here for "recovering after improper shutdowns" - http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 934#349934, playdayz performance tweaks http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=33652 and bigbass' method (via shinobar) for automatic ethernet connection on bootup http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy//viewt ... 206#388206. From my understanding, these tweaks really help to bring Puppy4 up to speed with the stability and functionality of the later kernels etc. [EDIT: on re-read this sounds like I was dis-ing Puppy4 - no, I meant more along the lines of OOTB user-friendliness/automation.] Do you think your repository audience would be interested in such "updates"? Maybe these and other tweaks presented together in a suped-up 412 ISO ?

P.S. I've been searching the wikka, using well-minded etc to try to "pinpoint" those Puppy bases best suited to the hardware I first listed. Wary is probably not going to be very successful, nor Puppy5+. Wish there was an online resource with a sliding scale of Puppy versions appropriate to given RAM, CPU type and speed (Hz, MMX etc). Do you know if there is one somewhere?

Suped-up 412

#34 Post by tuxtoo »

Hi Puppyt

Thanks for the suggestions and here are my initial thoughts on them. I have briefly looked through the forum posts you refer to, and yes, I would like to include them in a kind of suped-up version of 412.

I suppose I have unintentionally started this with my puppy-4.1.2-lite.iso which I use as a base for making ISO’s for my own use and testing pet packages. Already included in this puplet is the ’Puppy-412 flash full screen fix’ plus ‘No Seamonkey, Opera flash doesn't work’ fix. Also the wallpaper setter requires either ‘fotoxx’ or ‘gpicview’ to be installed to work. There is a fix there to make the wallpaper setter work but without the preview, although installing either of the image viewers will return the wallpaper setter to fully functional. These fixes are not included in puppy-4.1.2-barebones.iso, puppy-4.1.2-barebones-retro.iso or g_pup-1.2.iso.

My reasons for using puppy-4.1.2-lite are that all the libs for the removed packages are still there and it is very easy just to use the Package manager to reinstall the missing packages. Or install the users preferred package, i.e. A word processor and spreadsheet. Just reinstall Abiword and Gnumeric from the package manager or Softmaker Office or Open Office from 412Collection or any of the other repos. The reason I like this approach is that Puppy is very easy to remaster with all your own preferred packages and settings included in the remaster.

I would like to include your suggestions in future versions of puppy-4.1.2-lite if I can, and the reason I say that is; I’m more of a Linux noob than expert and I am just a Puppy fan with some web skills able to give something back to the Puppy community. So these are just my thoughts on this and I am open to further suggestions.

As to finding a suitable Puppy version for your hardwear, I think it is a case of trial and error. Just download whatever version was released nearest to the date of the hardwear as a starting point. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Hi tuxtoo,
eventually I was able to get an AC transformer (mil-spec) for 2 of my 3 auction-winning laptops. I have one working (yippee!) but I haven't spent a lot of time working out which Puppy works 'BEST' with it. The working box has a P-III Coppermine CPU (500MHz) and 512MB sdram - and it also has a resistant touch screen - and I've never used touch screens before. Could you recommend something for me, driver-wise, in the 412 stable? And, how is your lite project travelling?
Cheers

Hi tuxtoo,
well its pretty late here in Oz, and I'm just racing this off before I hit the sack. My Australian-made "Opentec OpenFire Series II, 461D" (?) turns out to be - thanks to rokytnji's sterling detective work - pretty much a re-badged Amrel Rocky RT686. He supplied me with the Amrel BIOS upgrade and now - I can apparently boot up via my pcmcia (pcCardbus} USB ports. Fabulous - as no HDD's were supplied with my batch, no cd-burners (cd-rom only), bootup times have been a bit prohibitive. With the old BIOS, bootup was only possible from floppy/hdd/cd-rom. (It's not equipped with touchscren after all - my mistake.) Still experimenting with various Puppies - unfortunately had no luck with your 412-lite offering but may have been a dodgy burn. Have to be pretty careful with burn speeds to make this old hardware happy, so that I can then install into USB-zip (flash drive).
I'm prattling - Legacy OS 4 is taking its sweet time with bootup - it's a bit on the 'enhanced' side and probably wringing my 512mb RAM for all its worth. The Legacy OS 2 refused to detect the usb sticks, though grudgingly saw the wifi card (bcmXXX pcmcia), I wasn't able to connect. So, here's hoping the lighter offerings you have in your repository can shed some light on the matter. Hope your remastering project is on track, too :)

EDIT: Legacy 4 promising to complete loading up any... second... now I just did a quick visit to see your "Farewell" notice on your 412 Collection website. That's sad news. You made a great effort there. I appreciate your diligence in bringing all those applications and bases together.
CHEERS and thanks so much!
