microsoft surface tablet |
|
Toronto star has the details about new microsoft tablet
http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1272209--microsoft-prices-surface-tablet-at-499-u-s
a 10.6-inch display
a cover with a keyboard is $119
Some of Surface’s specifications look pretty standard: the processor is an NVIDIA Tegra 3, paired with 2GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of storage. There’s WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 4.0, along with a couple of cameras and of course a touchscreen, in this case with a 16:9 aspect ratio – like we’ve seen on many Android tablets – and running at 1,366 x 768 resolution.

SEATTLE—Microsoft Corp. will sell its first computer, a device called
Surface RT, for as little as $499 as the software maker pushes into the
tablet market dominated by Apple Inc.’s iPad.
The first iteration of the device, powered by a chip with technology from
ARM Holdings Plc, will be available as a 32- gigabyte model for $499, the
company said in a statement. With a black cover, it will cost $599, and a
64-gigabyte version will be $699. The machine goes OVERPRICED Oct. 26, and
Redmond, Washington-based Microsoft will take a limited number of early
online orders starting at noon Oct. 15. |

Looks nice. but no touch screen, that would be ok at $249, which equates to £159 - but not at £229, which is £70 too much.
Why are they trying to stiff us in the UK?
At $249 (£159) I’d buy it - but not at £70 more - they shouldn’t try to con us in the UK.
When they and others like iCon learn we don’t like being stiffed, they might start moving some real quantity in the UK. Meanwhile US enjoy.
JFI - look at this - a 10“ touchscreen laptop for £149.
http://www.ergoelectronics.com/products/10inch-gonote-touchscreen-android-4-netbook-gnt10#.UIFMXnvB4yg
Not quite so snazzy - but not too bad for £149.
Best regards - Ray

Good review of Samsung chromebook
http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-series-3-chromebook-late-2012-review-20252951/
| Quote: |
You’ve got a VGA camera built-in for average video chat on the web (on
Google+ Hangouts, of course) as well as a full-sized HDMI port for video
output. You can connect to this device with 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB 2.0
port, and Bluetooth 3.0. Inside is a Samsung Exynos 5 dual-core
processor – this is the next generation of processors working for mobile
devices Samsung introduced last year and made available here in 2012,
only available on this Chromebook thus far. The next-newest after this is
a Samsung Exynos 4 quad-core which you’ll find on the Galaxy Note II.

port of Ubuntu to Nexus 7 |
|
A group is working on a port of Ubuntu to Nexus 7 tablet
by Google.
Note that it doesn't use Allwinner processor, instead Tegra is used.
| Quote: | Does putting Ubuntu on the Nexus 7 void the warranty?
According to Google, as long as Stock Android is running and the
bootloader is re-locked, the warranty will still be valid. |
| Quote: | Attaching a USB Device to the Nexus 7
You can attach USB devices to the Nexus 7 if you purchase a Micro USB
Host Cable (OTG Cable) from Amazon or other electronics retailers. The
cable may be difficult to find at local stores and you may have to order
online. Once this cable is attached to the Nexus 7 you can attach a USB
hub or a USB device directly.
|
| Quote: | | There is no way to charge the device while it is connected to the OTG cable |

There is rumour that Google will soon sell a Chrome notebook
that will have a touch screen in addition to keyboard and pad.
Original story in China times
Translation to English
Spotted by Techcrunch
http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/13-inch-google-chromebook-with-touch-expected-early-next-year-20121126/
| Quote: |
The new Google Chromebook is rumored to feature a 12.85-inch display,
and it’s also not going to rely strictly on keyboard and mouse input for
user interaction. No, this Chromebook is going to offer full-on multitouch
support. You’ll be able to employ pinch-to-zoom and swipe gestures to
navigate, and (perhaps more importantly) the single-finger pull-back-and-
release needed to enjoy Angry Birds in the browser.
