@antiloquax,

Did you upgrade your Arch system from soft-float to hard-float? If so did you get much of a performance boost?

Just after I first got my R_Pi, I tried Debian Squeeze and Arch, and was quite impressed that Arch was considerably faster than Debian (at the time both distros had only soft-float).

I hope someone with the skills eventually does a Puppy version using Arch.

You need something with HDMI or DVI digital input.


doesnt the rasp already have hdmi out?

Yeah, but the screen thing he wanted to use didn't have an HDMI in.

Yes, The hard float speeds it up a fair bit. If you run arch with some overclock and use lightweight desktop managers (I use rox and openbox) it's really quick. I'll run some actual benchmarks soon.
Sadly, I haven't got the skills to make a full puplet.

I hope this is the correct place to put this. I see that others have posed similar requirements of touch screen, etc. Also, it does not seem like this rpi clone has been mentioned in the last 3 or 4 pages that I have read.

I have an idea to use the cubieboard www.cubieboard.org (which is an open source community-funded rasberry Pi clone - A10 1GHz processor, 1Gb ram, ethernet, SATA socket for hard drives, HDMI socket, VGA, I2C pinouts etc, roughly 80 US dollars) and to develop the screen and apps using python.

As far as I can see at them moment, I would need
basic Linux distro
Sound in/out
webcam/video in/out
Network stuff
Geany-like editor

No other apps really, but I will want to display large icons on the screen and use these as touch buttons for user input. I think the first thing is to develop a touch screen environment which just launches applications when the buttons are touched and for it to be pretty quick, but 1GHz should be OK.

Probably a bit like an industrial PC used to control machinery (touch screen rather than bespoke keyboord) or a vending machine idea.

It is very early days in this project yet and so just starting to think what I need and so I would appreciate your input please.

Is there anywhere which tells us what is compiled into the various puppies for the rasberry pi ?
