Puppy from CD sees HD but none of the data in it

First post here, I have a failed PC (circa 2005 vintage using XP)
I returned to it to find I had no response at all, had to power off and it would not reboot
I had a Puppy Linux boot cd from about a year ago when another PC died, I believe its version 5.2.5
It booted the dead PC but it does not show my data, it recognizes the hard drive and it shows a total memory of 2075188kb, with free memory 1743844kb whereas I know there was very little space left
Am I looking in the wrong place or does this suggest the hard drive is toast?
Any advice appreciated

Please explain. Where are you seeing these numbers?

Is there a drive icon on the desktop? If you click it, does the drive mount?

Run Gparted from the System menu. What does it say about the drive?

Many thanks for the prompt reply and apologies for not coming back sooner, I foolishly forgot to follow the the thread

There is no recognisable drive icon on the desktop, there is for the cd drive

I ran Gparted as suggested and then selected scan ll drives, it comes up with :-

Partition = unallocated
File system = unallocated
Size = 186.31 GiB
Used = ---
Unused = ---

In the box top right is /dev/sda (186.31 GiB)

What do I do next please?

Thanks for your reply

I am unsure what the first command is for but ran fdisk however it came up with :-

The number of cylinders for that disk is set to 302885.
There is nothing wrong with that , but this is larger than 1024, nand could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (eg old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (eg DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

I have no idea what effect the above may have or what to do next?

Apologies I forgot to answer the question of where I found the quoted numbers

Under System > System Status and Config > Hardinfo hardware information

Not being used to linux I was just looking around for information

Hi Horatio,

please do the following:

- boot your PC with the Puppy Linux CD while using the boot option:

puppy pfix=ram

- while running Puppy Linux click on the 'file' icon; the ROX file handler will pop up

- click on the green arrow within the ROX window; now you will see some folders like 'bin..dev.. etc' and so on

- click on the folder 'tmp'; there is a file named 'bootkernel.log' this one is needed for further help

- now move the mouse cursor to the desktop icon 'console' and click on it

- in the 'urxvt' console you need to enter

gzip /tmp/bootkernel.log

- if you look at the folder 'tmp' now, you will see, that your file 'bootkernel.log' has been changed to:

bootkernel.log.gz

please post this file.

I'm using Puppy 525. If you left-click on the icon I've ringed on red below, then click on the "All Drives" button which appears, you are then informed about the capacity of the various drives/partitions and how much of each is free space, ( the "sda" are partitions on my single hard drive, "sdb" is a USB memory stick).

Sorry for being dense but where would I get the option puppy pfix=ram

When I boot from the CD I get to a point where I am prompted to enter xorgwizard

Then set the display

(this takes a few attempts) but finally I get a prompt to enter xwin to start X then have to reset time, keyboard etc

Unfortunately I do not get that box when i click the green icon in the lower bar, It comes up with a box headed Mounted Drives and options for All Drives or Quit, selecting All Drives brings up a box with just Quit in it

Never had that myself, it doesn't sound good.

BTW to select "pfix=ram" press the "f2" button on keyboard when you boot up , (press f2 when the puppy head logo fills the screen).

In command prompt:

fdisk --help

fdisk -l <--- will show what file storage devices are connected to computer

fdisk -l /dev/sda1 <--- will show some information about particular partition of file storage device /dev/sda, if the /dev/sda1 partition exists.

Added item = tried to use the command you mentioned but got :- Could not find Kernel image .... it then flipped to booting so am unsure if there was more but if there was it was not much

It may not be mechanically dead. But its filesystem has gotten badly corrupted.

There are programs around like testdisk that may be able to recover some data from the drive.

Back home,

Horatio, let us try one more thing:

- boot up Puppy Linux

- open the 'Menu' choose 'System' and there 'Pdisk partition manager' and click on it to start this application.

- The window 'Pdisk drive partition manager' will open up. Choose the option 'sda' and click on it.

- Another window of 'Pdisk drive partition manager' shows up. Choose 'fdisk' and click on it.

- In the 'fdisk' window you have to enter 'p' . This will show all your drive information.

- Please make a screen shot of it and post it to the forum. Screen shot:(Menu -> Graphic -> mtPaint-snapshot screen capture)

- The last step: click on the 'fdisk' window again and enter: 'q' to quit the fdisk program.

To post a file to the forum just go to 'Add an Attachment' and click on the 'Browse' button and use 'File Upload' or simply enter f.e. '/tmp/bootkernel.log.gz' to the line 'Filename'. Then click on 'Add Attachment'. That's all. :wink:

Not only am I trying to get used to Windows 7 but also Linux as well

I would suggest that you download the newest version of Puppy Linux.

In your case Precise Puppy Linux 5.4.1 'precise-5.4.1.iso' would be fine.

You can find it there:

http://mirror.aarnet.edu.au/pub/quirky/precise-5.4.1/

The reason why I'm asking for this is, that the number of heads exceed 255.
As your disk uses 'Number of Platters: 3' with 86 heads -> equals 258 heads in total.
The fdisk of Precise Puppy might display different numbers.

Please post back if you are/were able to download and try.

Question to the forum members: W....-XP what are they using?

I am having to download using a win 7 laptop and saved the file to a thumb drive, moved to the ill PC and tried to run the file, and get an error message No run action specified, so finally found this and tried to set it but just went round in circles, what am I supposed to do please?
