how to check sum?

I want to learn how to check sum
I am using linux puppy slako now
and I am trying to burn a linux percise iso cd
I just downloaded the iso image

@Sky Aisling I used gtkhash to check a sha, but I don't get the right sum. It was Mint 14 64bit. I burned it anyway,it seems to run ok.

Guess the theory is that the .iso are so small there is less to go wrong. :)

I see there is sha1 and sha 256 ? I downloaded the file twice. Once with Seamonkey and again with Firefox. The file size was correct.
